Kimball Library News 4/22/13

Thinking about spring cleaning?  Kimball Library accepts book donations year round, but twice a year we urge you to clear out those you no longer want and bring them in to us.  The Town-wide Yard Sale (Saturday, May 18) is coming up and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase.  These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now.  We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.  When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s), we then decide if it is to be sold or transferred to a non-profit organization. Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.  Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of material, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you and meet you at the back of the building.

The ‘Friends’ Book & Bake Event on Saturday, May 18th, will have lots of great adult and children’s books for sale. Most adult books are $2.00 or less and children’s books are under $1.00.  DVDs, VHS videos and music are $2.00 or less.  Audio books will be priced individually.  There will be “Special/Collector Books” for sale, and each book from that list will be priced individually.  There will be a great selection of home baked goods and yard sale items.  Come early for the best selection as items do tend to go quickly. We will be selling from 8am-3pm.  This event is sponsored by ‘The Friends of the Kimball Library’ who support many wonderful programs such as “Summer Reading” which is right around the corner.  Your patronage at these events really matters to us.

Here’s a brief reminder that we have a little something for kids ages 4-8 every Friday night until summer vacation.  PJ Peeps are at 7pm and we have some stories and a goodnight snack ready for the children.  PJ Peeps are welcomed to come in pajamas and bring their friends.  Registration is not required.

We will be closed Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27.)  Two day loan items checked out on Thursday the 23rd will not be due back until May 28th.  Take advantage of the extension and have a safe and happy holiday weekend. Top of Form

Take a look at the two giant ‘Froggy’ characters hanging on the wall entering the children’s craft area to be inspired while you register. an all new ‘Here’s Froggy’ event just around the corner.  We just love Froggy’s humor and think you will, too.  Froggy books are written by Jonathon London and his humor appeals to a variety of readers.  A few of his books include ‘Let’s Go, Froggy!’, ‘Froggy gets Dressed’, ‘Froggy goes to the Doctor’, ‘Froggy learns to Swim’, and ‘Froggy’s Baby Sister’.   Join Froggy and us on Saturday, May 4th, from 11am-12pm for ‘Here’s Froggy!’ as we read Froggy stories and do special Froggy activities. This event is perfect for K-grades 3. Please register online or give us a call to join in the fun.

As you go through your spring cleaning, do you ever wonder if what you have in your hand is worth anything more than the dust it is collecting?  Join us on Tuesday evening, May 14th, from 6:30-8:00pm for ‘Antiques vs. Collectibles’.  Presenter Ron Wackowski, Certified Appraiser & Licensed Auctioneer and owner of The Queen's Falcon, Lawrence, MA, will discuss the difference between antiques and collectibles.  Attendees are welcome to bring a small item of interest with them.  Ron will discuss the items as part of the overall discussion.  You may have an undiscovered valuable treasure on your hands, and this may be the night you find out!  This event is sponsored by the generous ‘Friends of the Library’.  Refreshments will be served.

Have you been missing ‘Hawke, the Reader Dog’?  She was unable to be with us in April because she was having a small surgical procedure, and we are happy that she is well and raring to have kids read to her again.  We Need YOU to come read to Lady Hawke!  She’s waiting to hear some great stories, and only you can help.  Please come, bring your favorite book, or borrow one of ours, and spend some time reading to our friend Hawke.  She is a very literate Labrador!  Register now for your emerging reader or child who just likes books and dogs to read on Wednesday, May 15, from 4-5pm.  If no one registers, she will not come.  (Parents, no need to worry, Lady Hawke is a trained therapy dog with lots of love and patience.)

Reminder: Folklorist Jo Radner will be presenting 'Braving the Middle Ground: Stories of Pre-Revolutionary Northern New England' on May 11th from 11:30am-12:30pm.  The stories we hear in our families tell us who we are and how we should view the world. What tales shaped New England identities in the 17th and 18th centuries?  In this performance, storyteller/historian Jo Radner juxtaposes Native American oral traditions and stories told by her own New England ancestors to reveal a complex colonial 'middle ground' in which English settlers and Native peoples saw one another as defenders and trespassers, pursuers and refugees, relatives and aliens, kind neighbors and ruthless destroyers.Top of Form

April vacation week Part Two (week of April 22-27) is just around the corner!  Take a peek at what we’ve got coming for the second half of that week!  Please carefully consider your schedule and register for those activities you can commit to.  We have space and supply considerations for most events.  Listed below are only what we’ve got going Thursday through Saturday.  Check the website or call us to see what events you’ll want to register for on Monday through Wednesday.

On Thursday, April 25, from 1:00-2:00pm we will be jumping for joy as we are offering ‘Hopping and Popping Popcorn’ for grades K-5. We’ll learn more about the healthy, tasty food we all love with activities and games using our five senses.  Save the date and make sure to register before all the spots are taken.

On Thursday evening, April 25, from 6:15-7:45pm we are hosting a ‘Kentucky Derby Party’ for grades 3 and up.  This is a great chance to learn about horse racing's biggest event.  Create amazing derby hats, enjoy special treats, join in our own sack race, and get a chance to 'run for the roses'.  This will be a fun-filled night so be sure to register so you don’t finish last.

On both Friday and Saturday (April 26 and 27) between the hours of 10:30am and 2:30pm there will be a ‘fairy tale’ scavenger hunt inside the library geared for children in grades K-5.  Search for missing treasures throughout the library right out of your favorite tales!  Guess the stories from the clues and earn a surprise for your very own ‘happily ever after’.  There are two different hunts, but they are both being offered on both dates.  This is a drop-in activity that does not require registration.  Just come during the allotted times, complete your card, and earn a small prize.  Ready, set, win!

As usual on Friday evening, we have ‘PJ Peeps’ from 7:00-7:30pm for ages 4-8.  PJ peeps are welcome to come in pajamas and listen to several stories and get a goodnight snack.  This is a story time for families and their young children capable of listening to three books.  We are serving stories and a single snack.  Please check our preschool classes if you are looking for an included craft and longer session.  This is a drop-in event.  Non-resident friends are welcome.  :)

One funny bone reminder for Wednesday evening, April 24, from 6:30-7:30pm as we host ‘Comic Mime Theater’ which is a family event that is best suited for elementary ages and up. ‘Comic Mime Theater’ highlights the best of Robert Rivest's 20 year career as a master mime performer, comic actor and improv artist. On Tuesday afternoon, April 23, from 1:00-2:30pm we are hosting ‘Recycled Art Fun’ for grades K-5.  Have fun making a craft, rather recycling a craft- out of all the odds and ends from our closet! On Tuesday evening, April 23, from 6:30-8:00pm it’s time for the teens and tweens in grades 6-12 to come in and get a new look!  Join Tina Roux, Independent Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, to 'trade' faces with your friend!  Sign up WITH a friend, and on this 'glam' night you'll be able to pick a face for your friend to wear and she'll be able to pick yours (trading faces).  These makeovers will be t/ween friendly.  This is a great time to get tips on skincare and how to apply makeup properly so you will look your absolute best!  All teens will get individualized attention.  ‘Trading Faces’ has limited seats so grab a partner and register soon.

On Wednesday, April 24, from 3:00-4:00pm we have ‘Watercolor Wonders’ for grades 3 and up.  This is a call for all artists or those who like to dabble in paint.  Create artwork using spray watercolors and watercolor resist.  Add salt to your work and discover what happens.  Register yourself and a friend.

Let’s have a drum roll for Wednesday evening, April 24, from 6:30-7:30pm as we host ‘Comic Mime Theater’ which is a family event that is best suited for elementary ages and up.  ‘Comic Mime Theater’ highlights the best of Robert Rivest's 20 year career as a master mime performer, comic actor and improv artist. Through humorous mime stories, spoken word, physical comedy, and a zany cast of characters, Robert Rivest transforms an empty stage into pure hilarity!  Please register each person as we do have a room capacity number.  Preschool children are requested to sit with an adult. Visit www.robertrivest.com to view clips and get your funny bone tuned in advance!

Here is a second chance at ‘Dress Me Up’ on April 24 from 4:00-7:00pm if you missed the March date.  Young ladies in need of a dress for prom can come and try on free dresses.  Please bring a student ID to verify that the dress you want is actually for prom.  There are over 60 dresses to choose from in various sizes, colors, and designs!  This event is sponsored by Timberlane Regional High School and is run by two students--Emily and Jacqueline.  Anyone attending prom is eligible for a dress.  You do not have to be a TRHS student.

Feeling lucky?  The ‘Friends of the Library’ are hosting a raffle here at the library.  There is a golf basket worth $375 which includes the following: Atkinson Country Club-round of golf for 4 (par 3), Brookstone-round of golf for 2, and Bradford Country Club-round of golf for 4 (18 holes).  There is also a bird basket that holds: a copper hummingbird feeder, Wild Birds Unlimited bird seed, a butterfly feeder, and more.  Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  The winners will be drawn and notified on May 18 at the semi-annual book sale.  You need not be present to win.  The best part is that all proceeds benefit youth programming.  Buy now, and buy often!
