TUESDAY EVENING AT THE MOVIES: The True Story Of The Screaming Eagles: 101st Airborne documentary covers the origin of the 101 Airborne Division, the screaming eagles but also highlights the Vietnam War when the 101st Airborne Division fought in several major campaigns and battles. Upon its arrival in Vietnam in 1965 (1st Brigade, followed by the 2nd and 3rd brigades in 1968), the division was an airborne unit.  In almost seven years of combat in Vietnam, elements of the 101st participated in 15 campaigns.

Got books?

We have our semiannual book & bake sale coming up on September 24th from 8-3pm.  Donating good quality materials are a good way to clean out your house and help your local library.

We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a charitable organization.  Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and library.

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

EVENING BOOK DISCUSSION: The first meeting for the fall is on Tuesday, September 20, at 6:00pm.  The book of the month is 'The Things They Carried’ by Tim O’Brien.

The Vietnam War still has the power to divide Americans between those for it and those against. Today it also divides us, just as surely, between those who remember its era firsthand and those not yet born when the troops came home. There also exists a divide between those who have served and those who have not.  There may be no better bridge across these twin divides than Tim O'Brien's novel in stories The Things They Carried. The details of warfare may have changed since Vietnam, but O'Brien's semi-autobiographical account of a young platoon on a battlefield without a front, dodging sniper fire and their own misgivings, but the challenges these young men faced in combat and after the war illuminate the challenges faced now and then by so many Soldiers Home & Away. *This description is adapted from The Big Read's Reader's Guide (c) 2016.

This book discussion is presented as part of a New Hampshire Humanities Community Project Grant called Community Stories: Soldiers Home & Away.  This is a collaboration involving nine southern NH libraries and Timberlane Regional School District.  For more details about this project and a full schedule of events and other details go to http://www.communitystoriesnh.org

MORNING BOOK DISCUSSION (Grades 8-12): Join us on Wednesday, September 28, at 10:15am to discuss ‘One Day’ by David Nicholls.  Coffee is always available with a sweet treat! All are welcome even if you just come to listen.

It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another.

Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: Unless otherwise indicated, we’ll be showing movies in our ‘theater’ in comfy chairs.  Take a look at what’s in the queue—September 6: ‘The Jungle Book’, September 13: ‘Money Monster’, and September 20: ‘Hamburger Hill’.  Movies start promptly at 1pm.  Popcorn will be served.

Parents, it’s time to get your tweens and teens enthused about library book groups and fostering that lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.  The discussions meet monthly on a regular basis.  Stay tuned below.

TWEEN BOOK DISCUSSION (Grades 5-7): The first meeting for the fall is on Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30pm.  The book of the month is 'Cracker: The Best Dog on the Battlefield' by Cynthia Kadohata.
Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler. It's an utterly unique powerhouse of a book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira.

We generally meet the first Wednesday evening of each month from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss the book selected. Refreshments and thought-provoking conversation will be served. All interested tweens are welcome. (Not young adults, not children -- hence, TWEENagers in grades 5-7.) Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.

Register once and we'll keep your name on until June.  Non-resident friends are welcome.

TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION (Grades 8-12): Join us on September 14th at 6:30pm to discuss ‘Sold’ by Patricia McCormick.  We serve both candy and challenging chat for all interested teens.
Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut on a mountain in Nepal. Though she is desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures.  But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

Written in spare and evocative vignettes, this powerful novel renders a world that is as unimaginable as it is real, and a girl who not only survives but triumphs.
