Kimball Library News 8/15/16

Parents, it’s time to get your tweens and teens enthused about library book groups and fostering that lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.  The discussions meet monthly on a regular basis.  Stay tuned below.

TWEEN BOOK DISCUSSION (Grades 5-7): The first meeting for the fall is on Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30pm.  The book of the month is 'Cracker: The Best Dog on the Battlefield' by Cynthia Kadohata.
Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler. It's an utterly unique powerhouse of a book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira.

We generally meet the first Wednesday evening of each month from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss the book selected. Refreshments and thought-provoking conversation will be served. All interested tweens are welcome. (Not young adults, not children -- hence, TWEENagers in grades 5-7.) Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.

Register once and we'll keep your name on until June.  Non-resident friends are welcome.

TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION (Grades 8-12): Join us on September 14th at 6:30pm to discuss ‘Sold’ by Patricia McCormick.  We serve both candy and challenging chat for all interested teens.
Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut on a mountain in Nepal. Though she is desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures.  But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

Written in spare and evocative vignettes, this powerful novel renders a world that is as unimaginable as it is real, and a girl who not only survives but triumphs.

*NEW* CREATIVE WORDS for AGES 3-6: NEW this fall!  Want your child to express their creativity through art without all the mess in your house? Are you interested in your child practicing their reading skills in unique and engaging ways? Sign up for Creative Words!

From the same instructor who brought you the popular Wiggle Words class, Creative Words will reinforce key reading skills through arts and crafts. Your student will be introduced to a variety of art mediums in three stations; wall, floor and table. Children aged 3 to 6 will love the fun themes each week and enjoy the ability to explore on their own pace with a child-directed format.

For more information on the instructor, Michelle Collins, and the Wiggle Words Program, please visit www.wigglewordsprogram.com.

Limited spots are available and classes are Thursdays starting in September (first class is September 15th at 11:30) for ages 3-6 only.  Class starts at 11:30 and runs for approximately 45 minutes.   Register today!  (Please note that your child will be registered for each week when you sign him/her up through December.  Please be considerate and do not take a space from someone else if you cannot generally commit to weekly sessions.  We do understand that sometimes things come up.)  Residents have priority.

*If your child is going straight to school afterwards, please feel free to bring a bag meal/snacks and enjoy our courtyard or the craft area for lunch.
