Kimball Library News 7/16/23

You may be wondering if the Kimball Library kids won the summer reading challenge!

The national theme that most NH libraries are using is ALL TOGETHER NOW which denotes kindness, friendship, and unity and Kimball Library is on the bandwagon!

Last year's challenge was for 200 registrations and the kids won that challenge! The result was making Kathy Watson dye her hair blue. Were the youth in Atkinson up for the challenge? Kids and teens should have registered to read and convinced their friends and family to register, too!

This year if 225 youth registered for summer reading (preschool through teen years), there will be 4 WACKY WEDNESDAYS in August (2, 9, 16, 30) where Ms. Kathy will work 10-hour shifts in a rainbow UNICORN onesie from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM! All ages may visit for photo ops and a rainbow treat.  It would be a shame for that opportunity to be lost, so let’s cross fingers that everyone that could participated!

At the time of the writing of this press release on July 14th, there were 190 registrations. Check out the website on August 1st to see who the winner is! Is it the kids or Kathy…?

POKEMON TERRARIUMS: Do you love Pokemon? Learn how to make a habitat just for your favorite friend. T/weens ages 10+ are invited to register for this special event happening on Tuesday, August 1st at 4:00 PM. All materials will be included, but feel free to bring your own special additions.

If you are fluent or are learning the language with a basic understanding of Italian vocab, grammar and verb conjugations (present tense), please come join us to further exercise your Italian the fun way! We’ll be meeting on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM.

SUMMER READING FINALE: Past practice has indicated that everyone is excited to close out the Summer Reading Program by petting cute farm animals and slurping up Kona Ice! Please register to join us on Wednesday, August 2nd to enjoy time with Mcdonny’s Farm who will feature petting pens with chicks, a goat, bunnies, and more. We also will be providing summer reading participants with a ticket to visit the Kona Ice truck!

This super fun finale is sponsored by the Ruth Campbell Fund. Thank you to all our registered readers for all always making our summer special.

WALKING TACOS: YES! It's walking tacos. Can't go to Mexico? Make your own dinner tonight right in the bag! Come have fun and cook with a friend.

Kimball Library News 7/9/23

It’s a great time to visit the Kimball Library Meeting Room to view the photography of Paul Arsenault that will be on display throughout the month of July.

PAUL ARSENAULT PHOTOGRAPHY: My love for photography began when I purchased a Pentax 35mm film camera in my early 20’s to photograph my growing family and adventures while hiking, birding, sailing and traveling. Studying photography led to my building a home darkroom and purchasing medium and large format cameras. The majority of my darkroom efforts was in creating black and white and Cibachrome prints.

My first digital camera allowed me to view my pictures online and print them on an inkjet printer. With this new technology, I scanned my 35mm slides, other negatives and transparencies. I continue to use my darkroom to process black and white 4X5 negatives for scanning and printing. My interest in landscapes, especially fall foliage, nature abstracts and old structures continues.

Many of my prints are from scanned slides, some 120 and 4X5 black and white and color prints and a few original Cibachrome prints. I hope you will enjoy the exhibit as much as I have enjoyed preparing it for you.

FIDGET SPINNERS CRAFTING: T/weens ages 10+ are invited to join Ms. Katie and Cathie P. to make your very own fidget spinner. Register yourself and your bestie for this cool crafting event happening on Monday, July 24th at 6:00 PM.

FAMILY FUN MOVIE: Zootopia is a city filled with talking animals. When a fox has to run from a crime he didn’t commit, the best cop in the city has to chase him down. That cop happens to be a rabbit. Things are not always what they seem in Zootopia. The fox and rabbit become embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens to bring them both down. They’ll have to work together to find out what’s really going on in Zootopia. Can enemies save each other’s lives and become friends?

Summer reading events are full throttle ahead and concerts abound! The first three events below are primarily musical which most all ages can enjoy!

ALL TOGETHER WITH MR. AARON: Come one and all to jam with for some fun songs and great music on Monday, July 17th in the Library Courtyard! Mr. Aaron is here to entertain the young and young at heart!

Mr. Aaron is a multi-instrumentalist performer and composer making music and videos for kids and their grown-ups, ages 0-10. He's a proud father of three amazing girls, and a longtime professional musician with a career playing in bands, musical theatre and more.

This is an "All Together Now" Summer Reading event, sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Invite your friends and family to register and join us.

ALL TOGETHER WITH KEITH MUNSLOW: Join us for some wonderful songs and music with cartoonist and entertainer, Keith Munslow. Keith is known for being a musician, storyteller, cartoonist, and stand-up comedian for kids and the young at heart. He will bring the house down with silly favorites like ‘Coffee Breath’ and can keep even the littlest ones captive as he sketches. He will be in the Library Courtyard on July 19th at 6 PM ready to tickle the ivories and funnybones of young and old alike.

Growing up as the youngest amid a boisterous family of five children, Keith spent most of his waking minutes lost in a world of his own creation. Because there was a piano in the house, and his older siblings had blazed the trail, he began playing at a young age. It wasn’t until an older brother came home from studying jazz improvisation at the Berklee College of Music that Keith learned some of the basics of music theory and he began tapping out songs on the keyboard. Influenced by the songwriting of Randy Newman and artists like Bootsy Collins, Little Richard and Professor Longhair, that the spark of music caught fire .With an unstinting commitment to creativity and collaboration, Keith continues to search for new opportunities to combine his interests in the performing arts, literacy and community building.

This is an "All Together Now" Summer Reading event, sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Please register so we can provide you with weather related changes in venue or schedule. If all goes as planned, we will be outside in the Courtyard, so bring your blankets, camp chairs, and even picnic dinner to enjoy.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES WITH JORDAN TW: Putting a fresh spin on traditional Celtic music, the Jordan TW Trio delivers a dynamic show full of lively fiddle tunes, haunting airs and classic sing-alongs. Fiddler/singer Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki is joined by fellow New Hampshire natives Matt Jensen on guitar and Chris Noyes on upright bass. Their shows blend the music of Ireland and Scotland with their own original material, drawing on multiple genres to produce a unique sound that has been described as “larger-than-life” and “brisk, lean and exceedingly lovely.” In 2013 Jordan was awarded the title of “Master Artist” by the NH State Council On The Arts, and later named “Best Fiddler 2016” by NH Magazine. He composed the New England Emmy®-nominated theme music for WMUR’s New Hampshire Chronicle, and the Trio formed the core band that recorded it. They have appeared live on NHPR’s “The Folk Show,” provided music for projects ranging from Ted Talks to children’s programs, and their albums can be heard on radio stations around the British Isles as well as here in New England. For more info about Trio visit: www.JordanTWmusic.com

The 2023 Summer Concert Series is generously sponsored by George Family Charities and hosted by the Friends of the Kimball Library. Please join us on Thursday, July 20th at 6 PM for a real treat in music!

In case of rain, the library concert will be moved to inside the Atkinson Fire Department. We suggest that in the event of rain, you check the Library website for updates.
