Kimball Library News 11/25/19

Want to tackle the holidays head on?  Register for ‘Appetizers for the Holidays Challenge’ happening at 6:30 PM on Monday, 12/16/2019.  This will be in conjunction with the ‘Healthy Cookbook Club’, but you do not have to be a cookbook club member to participate in this event as all are welcome to attend.
We will be using Kimball Library healthy cookbooks, magazines and on-line magazines from Overdrive. Browse our Kimball collection and online resources and choose a 'Yummy' appetizer to try out at home and then make some extra to share with the group.

Bring samples to share and include copies of the recipe so others can go home and recreate your delightful appetizer at home. Just think how you will 'WOW' your friends and family when you bring a delicious 'new and healthy' appetizer to your next holiday get-together.
Registration is required. If you need help with Overdrive downloadable magazines just stop by and we can help you out. There will be some holiday magazines and books set aside at the circulation desk to help you in your search as well.

HOLIDAY GIFT WRAPPING: Kimball Library is throwing a gift-wrapping extravaganza!! Youth ages 10 and up are welcome to drop in at the library on Monday, 12/23/2019 between 5:30 and 7:30 PM. Bring your unwrapped gifts for family and friends to the library and wrap them here. We will provide all wrapping supplies and the holiday cheer! Bring friends along with you and have fun as you wrap presents together! Come for a short time or stay the whole 2 hours.

Please register so we can ensure we have supplies for everyone! Register a friend to come with you!

HOME WITH CHROME: Take the bus on Mondays and plan to spend time doing homework using either your own Chromebook or one of ours. Ages 10+ under library policy do not need a parent to accompany them so youth in that category may come and hang out in the Teen Room to use *Chromebooks and get homework done.

Supervision will be intermittent. We will assist with homework questions to the best of our ability but we are NOT tutors or task masters. This space is for tweens and teens who are mostly self-directed and need an environment away from home to get homework done and would enjoy hanging with peers. (This is an especially great idea for 5th graders who will be using Chromebooks daily starting in middle school and we will assist with getting them familiar with the device.) Feel at 'home with Chrome'!

Youth may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the library if parents make arrangements with pick-up patrol or from the Timberlane Regional Middle or High School. (The library is not taking responsibility for the transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack them an extra snack that they can have when they arrive.

Please register ages 10 and up and start your t/weens week off right by getting homework done with fun! They can come every Monday we are open or intermittently. They can actually come any day, but supervision cannot be an expectation other than Mondays.

*The awesome Lenovo Chromebooks were generously donated by The Greater Salem Rotary Club! We couldn’t be more grateful!

SPECIAL HOURS: Due to the holiday season we will have some special hours in December.  Please be aware that on December 24th (Christmas Eve) we will be OPEN from 10-2 only.  We will be CLOSED on December 25th (Christmas Day). We will be OPEN December 31st (New Year’s Eve) from 10-3 only.   We will be CLOSED on January 1st. Overdrive Downloadable Books, the Libby App, Kanopy, and Hoopla are open 24/7 with a library card in good standing.

Join us after school as we commemorate Computer Science Education Week by learning some basic coding skills. Kids in grades 1-5 are invited to come to the library after school to try out some kid-appropriate coding programs. Students will have the option to work individually or cooperatively on coding projects. We will be focusing on Scratch, a visual programming language geared towards kids. This program will be self-paced so there will be lots of time for exploration. All levels of coding experience are welcome!

Youth may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the library if parents make arrangements with pick-up patrol. (The library is not taking responsibility for transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.)  If kids come directly after school on the bus we encourage packing a small snack for them.

There are two dates to choose from.  You may register your child for one or both times.  Select December 11 or December 13 from 3:15-4:30 PM.  The bus drops off at approximately 3:18.  Kids coming right from school are always hungry so please pack them a small brain food.  😊

Please note that completion of drop-off waiver by an adult caregiver is required BEFORE any student under age 10 can participate in this program without an adult caregiver present in the building.

KIDS COOK TONIGHT: It's that time again! Cooking is fun for everybody so why not join us for laughs, fun and FOOD? You're making it yourself of course! It will be absolutely delicious so come for a great night of cooking together on Thursday, December 12th at 6:00 PM. We predict you’ll want to eat every last bite while you're here. So, don your chef hats and aprons and come learn to cook in community. Parents, register children in grades three to five and let us know if there are any food allergies to consider.

PATRON REQUESTED SERVICE: Want to make a library donation, use the copier or fax machine, pay a late fine etc. but forgot your check book or cash at home? We now offer a credit card payment service. We will be able to accept MasterCard, Discover, Visa, American Express and JCB. A debit card is processed as a credit card only if the card has a MasterCard, Visa, Amex or Discover logo present. Please Note: There are additional fees to cover the cost of the credit card processing company fees with a $1.50 minimum. These fees go directly to our third party processor and are not retained by the library. Convenience fees cannot be refunded. Just call or stop by the front circulation desk for details on this new patron requested service.

UPCOMING DECEMBER FILMS: It’s Tuesday at the movies.  Join us for free films and popcorn.  The next upcoming films include –

The Goldfinch ~ December 3rd:  This is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally acclaimed bestseller. One 13-year-old boy’s life is destroyed in a matter of seconds when his mother perishes in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Afterward, he is forced to start his life over. Placed with a wealthy family, he grows up in the shadow of the horrific tragedy that transformed his world. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love.

Gifted ~ December 10th:  Frank Adler is a single man raising his spirited 7-year-old niece and child prodigy Mary.  He plans to give her a normal school experience in their home town in Florida.  Mary’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn who has her own idea of how things should be and plans for Mary’s future. What does Mary want is the question.

Downton Abbey ~ December 17th:  The beloved characters of Downton Abbey take to the big screen, and it turns out that they’ve got a major event to prepare for. After all, it’s not every day that royalty makes an appearance. Of course, it’s not long before tensions are running high. The property isn’t even close to ready when it becomes clear that Carson the butler will need to come out of retirement to help run this sinking ship before it’s too late.

Popcorn will not be served for this showing.  Instead join us starting at 12:15 for Tea and Cookies.  Feel free to dress in your Downton Abbey attire.  The movie will start at 1:00. Help us plan and register for the Downton Abbey movie.

Kimball Library News 11/11/19

Drop in between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 10th, to wish Director, Diane Heer, farewell and happy travels as she retires at the end of this calendar year.  Diane has been a dedicated and loyal director of the Kimball Library since June 1, 2008 and has been a leader for change and progressive standards in this public library. Join us for refreshments and celebratory hoopla to honor her and her accomplishments.  Please share this information with others (friends and neighbors) who may not see this particular invitation.  The public and all librarians are enthusiastically encouraged to come!  Refreshments will be provided and we are very much looking forward to seeing you all.

YANKEE INGENUITY: Stories of Headstrong and Resourceful People (Atkinson Historical Society Program): Jo Radner shares a selection of historical tales ''humorous and thought-provoking'' about New Englanders who have used their wits in extraordinary ways to solve problems and create inventions. The stories are engaging and entertaining, but also may raise some profound questions about our admiration of ingenuity and about the ethics of pursuing discoveries without taking their potential outcomes into account. The performance will include discussion with the audience, and may introduce a brief folktale or a poem about inventiveness and problem-solving.

Storyteller Jo Radner received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Before returning to her family home in western Maine as a freelance storyteller and oral historian, she spent 31 years as professor at American University in Washington, DC, teaching literature, folklore, American studies, Celtic studies, and storytelling. She has published books and articles in all those fields, and is now writing a book titled Performing the Paper: Rural Self-Improvement in Northern New England, about a 19th-century village tradition of creating and performing handwritten literary newspapers. She is past president of the American Folklore Society and the National Storytelling Network.

This program is sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society and a grant through the New Hampshire Humanities. Register for this free and exciting event taking place on Thursday, December 12th, at 6:30 PM.  Parking may be tight so please consider carpooling and arriving early.

CHILDREN’S DISPLAY CASE: Kids are proud of their collections as they should be!  We have opportunity once a month to feature a collection of someone in the age range of K-12 in the display case in the Children’s Room.  We’ve had Legos, snow globes, minions, Star Wars, Hot Wheel cars, American Girl dolls and accessories, Byers Choice Carolers, Curious George, cat collection, Perler beads, Shopkins, Hatchimals, and so much more!   Drop by the Children’s Room and talk to one of the youth librarians if your children want to put their collection on display some month.  Please know there is sometimes a multiple month wait.

Likewise, any adults who have a special collection that may be of interest please let us know.  We have highlighted beautiful art work, crafts, antiques, etc. in the past.  Please contact lpowers@kimballlibrary.com if you are interested.

DOWNLOAD/STREAM: In case you’ve forgotten, these services are available to you with a current library card in good standing: Kanopy (movies), Overdrive (ebooks and audiobooks), Hoopla (ebooks, music, and audiobooks), the Libby app (Overdrive selections on a user-friendly app), and there is access to our databases with goodies such as Novelist if you need help finding a new author or a read-alike.  If you are unfamiliar with our services and need friendly tech help please call for an appointment or email kwatson@kimballlibrary to agree on a one-on-one time for 30 minutes.  This tech help is done in lieu of large classes so you will have individualized attention for just your device or need.  Remember----there is no such thing as a silly question! Call the library or email today to get started.

HOLIDAY HOURS: Please note we are closed on both November 28th and 29th for a Thanksgiving break.  We are open regular Saturday hours on November 30th. We are so thankful for all our wonderful patrons!! Stock up accordingly, and remember that Hoopla and Overdrive Downloadable books are open 24/7.
