Kimball Library News 7/18/16

The youth of Atkinson have pulled together and have WON the summer reading challenge!  At the time of this press release there are well over 500 raffle tickets submitted between the children’s room and the teen jar.  This means on the night of the finale there will be times during the night where the Youth Services Director will be in a designated space where registered summer reading participants (only) will have a chance to shoot water from toys we provide at Kathy.  If your child doesn’t read the newspaper you can keep them in suspense as we will not announce it but we won’t lie if asked.  ;)

SUMMER READING FINALE: ON your MARK, GET SET, it's time to PAR-TAY for the closure of summer reading.  Pack up a picnic and the kiddos.  Eat the light supper that you have prepared in the courtyard, learn some western line dancing with Gail Eaton and friends (SURE, wear your cowboy boots!), and we'll be serving delicious ice cream sundaes with a variety of great toppings at the break that you can choose from.

Register the entire family (all ages) so we have enough ice cream and toppings, and we can notify you should the venue change if the New England weather does not cooperate.  Invite everyone as long as you account for them in the registration.

Also, we are having a very special guest invited that most of the littles will love—PETE THE CAT.  Pete will be wandering through at some point and be able to pose for photos with children.  He doesn’t talk, but he’s very friendly and understands gestures.

ROUGH Itinerary: (Supper on the back lawn anytime--use our outdoor seating or bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs so you can be comfy.)  Arrive at 6 and stay until 7:45 and you won’t miss a thing!

  • Demo dance 6:15 - 6:30pm
  • Group lesson with event participants 6:30 - 7:00pm
  • Break from 7:00 - 7:30pm while ice cream is served
  • Group lesson with event participants again from 7:30 - 8:00pm
As you are reading this you may wonder if you are childless if you are welcome.  EVERYONE is welcome to register, the only portion of the evening slated for summer reading participants only will be soaking the Youth Services Director.  Only the summer reading youth will be eligible.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: During the month of August the 1pm movies will be shown bimonthly.  Next up: ‘Eye of the Eagle’ (August 9) and ‘Race’ (August 23).  The best seats go early so be prompt.  Free popcorn and a smile will be served.  Details on each film are available on the library calendar on our website.

MINUTE TO WIN IT GAMES: It's time for the ‘Minute to Win It’ games! Everything is fast and furious! Sign up the kiddos and see how they do.  Time will fly by!

We'll be playing ‘Cookie Face’!  ‘Stack it Up’! ‘Suck it Up’! ‘Stack Attack’! ‘Scoop it Up’! ‘Moving on Up’! ‘Nuts Stacker’! ‘Junk in the Trunk’ and ‘Defy Gravity’!

This is a speedy summer reading event and children entering grades kindergarten through grade 5 are invited to register quickly and try their skills out on Monday, August 1st, at 6:30pm.  Don’t blink and miss out.

WHEN YOU READ, YOU SCORE! (BOSTON BRUINS EVENT): We are proud of the fact that we were one of the nine libraries in the state of New Hampshire to win this ‘When you read, you score!’ grant from the Boston Bruins.  Enthusiastically join us on Tuesday, August 2nd, at 6:30pm to celebrate and please wear black and gold to the event for Boston pride!

Register children of all ages to meet Blades, the Boston Bruins’ mascot.  Join us as we hear Blades' story, do a few simple crafts, and get photographs taken with Blades.  Some of the Ice Girls will be in attendance and be part of the trivia event.  Mark your calendar and register your kids--we can take up to 75 children for this event.  Non-residents are welcome.

STAY TUNED: As you all know, the Youth Services Director has challenged all the summer reading participants to get raffle tickets into the jar.  Our goal is to have your children in the game.  IF youth collectively get at least 500 tickets in the raffle jar(s), by July 30, Kathy will be the moving target of water squirt toys from 6-8 on August 4 from all participants.  GET IN THE GAME to win prizes and soak her!  We’ll announce the count next week when we promote our summer reading finale.

The summer concerts in the courtyard continue!

Thus far we’ve had lovely weather for drinking in the sounds of talented musicians.  Next on the docket is ‘Acoustic Truffle’ that will playing on Thursday, July 28th, at 6:30pm. (In the event of inclement weather this event will be moved inside.) Truffle acoustic trio consists of David Bailey (bass, vocals), Ned Chase (mandolin, guitar, lap steel & vocals), and Dave Gerard (vocals, acoustic & resonator guitars). These three musicians have been creating music together since 1986. They have performed in all but ten states across the U.S., playing as many as 275 shows in one year.

Truffle has achieved widespread popularity by headlining many respected venues as well as sharing the stage with international acts as Little Feat, Phish, The Band, Dave Matthew’s Band, David Lindley, and Blues Traveler to name only a few.

Truffle has released five albums (including ‘Nervous Laughter” on the November/Sony label) as well as contributing to Gerard’s four solo records, and assorted compilations. Their music has also appeared on multiple major motion picture soundtracks. Their latest, ‘That’s Right” is a collection of songs penned and arranged by all the members; with quality song writing, memorable melodies and tasty production, it is by far their most mature record to date. They have also contributed to all of Gerard’s solo albums, including the 2009 release ‘The Zoomy Trail”; voted best local/ regional CD of 2009 by Portsmouth NH’s WSCA radio. And the 2015 release ‘FIVE”; coming in in the top 15 CD’s of New England with FIVE stars by Edge Magazine.

The trio’s groove-driven acoustic style has a sound all its own. With elements of soul, bluegrass, R&B, and world beat, they bring a well-rounded set of ‘music-Americana” to the stage. Their love of acoustic music, and a different set list and approach from their electric shows, creates truly unique listening experience.
This event is generously sponsored by the Atkinson Women’s Civic Club.
