Kimball Library News 6/12/17

Just a reminder that unlike some other libraries, our hours do not change in the summer.  We are open M-F from 10-8, and on Saturdays from 10-3.  One exception coming up is the 4th of July.  This year it falls on a Tuesday, and we will be closed.  Happy Independence Day in advance. Plan your check-outs accordingly.

Another summer reminder is that the New England Aquarium does not allow museums to use the passes during June, July, or August.  Other passes we have do have available are the Currier Museum of Art, Imajine That, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, John F. Kennedy, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, Peabody Essex, Seacoast Science Center, & Zoo New England.  Passes can be reserved in advance by logging into the website or calling us.  There are additional passes from Sandown and Plaistow the can be picked up from an Atkinson resident one hour before closing the day before use.  Contact them directly about reserving those.

BUILD A MARBLE RUN: Stop in anytime between 10:30am and 4:30pm to try your hand at building a marble run on Thursday, June 29th. Stay for a small amount or stay for hours and build a marble city!  Please register kids ages 4 and above, only. Note that marbles will be provided and are choking hazards. Younger siblings will not be allowed into the room without strict adult supervision.

BUILD A BETTER WORLD with a SUB: (Not a submarine, but a sub sandwich!) The perfect night to come build a good, better, best sandwich that you’ve ever had, seen, or eaten is on Monday, July 3rd, at 6:30pm.  Put EVERYTHING on it!  Have a BIG SMILE and celebrate this special summer with a big HERO? SUB? HOAGIE? Register children entering kindergarten through grade 5 now for a good night of eating their own masterpieces!

BUILD A BETTER BOOK CLUB: Wonder is the funny, sweet and incredibly moving story of Auggie Pullman. Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old, but he is far from ordinary. Born with a terrible facial deformity, this shy, bright ten-year-old has been home-schooled by his parents for his whole life, in an attempt to protect him from the stares and cruelty of the outside world. Now, for the first time, Auggie is being sent to a real school – and he’s dreading it. Auggie sees himself as just an ordinary kid and all he wants is to be accepted. But can he convince his new classmates that he’s just like them, underneath it all?

Build a better world against bullying.  Copies of the book ‘Wonder’ will be available at the front desk and children’s room.  Conversation and candy will be served to t/weens entering grades 5 and up on Wednesday, July 5th, at 6:30pm when we gather. The movie ‘Wonder’ is coming out in November. Let’s talk now! If time allows we will choose some books for the fall book discussions.  Register in advance.

Kimball Library News 6/5/17

Summer reading registration is in full swing!  Make sure your child or teen has registered for the entire program as well as many of the exciting events coming up.  We can’t build a better world without you, so COME.

Reminders of events coming up in the next two weeks—Jungle Jim’s Minecraft Madness, Build an Automated Robot, Build a Magic Carpet, Yo-Yo People, Build a Yo-Yo Master, Build a Masterpiece, and Build a Marble Run.  PHEW!  If you see something that intrigues you then jump on our online calendar for details or call the youth department at the library for a detailed explanation.

SUMMER MOVIES: The following is a listing of upcoming films being shown in our lovely air-conditioned meeting room on an 84 inch screen. Popcorn is served at the 1:00 showings. *Movies are subject to change and updates will be posted on our website.  Coming up next are ‘Beauty and the Beast’ ~ June 13th, Rated PG, ‘A United Kingdom’ ~ June 27th, Rated PG-13, ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ ~ July 11th Rated: PG-13,  and ‘The Lost City of Z’ ~ July 25th, Rated PG-13.

‘BUILD A BETTER WORLD’ SUMMER READING MADE EASY: It cannot be any less hassle free for children and parents to get on board with the ‘Build a Better World’ summer reading program for youth entering grades K-5!  1. We’re counting each time you check out materials when you visit. Put your name and phone number on the ticket and drop it in the jar.  Names will be chosen weekly for prizes!  2. You will get a sticker to put on your world that will be displayed in the library. For every 5 stickers (visits with check-outs), you are able to pick a prize or a book!  3. Kids entering grade 5 register for the youth program, but may also register and attend any events listed for their age group in the t/ween program.
Do you have preschool children not entering kindergarten yet?  We have simple summer bingo cards and they can color in a space when they listen to a book by a certain author, go the park, or other simple literacy activities. They, too, can choose a book or a prize when they reach a BINGO on their card.  It’s easy to keep everyone interested in reading over the summer as to not lose any gains they made during the academic year.  Research does show that staying vested in literature over the summer will give a stronger start in the fall.

KIMBALL COURTYARD EVENTS: Up next is Jungle Jim of Boston on June 21st, The Yo-Yo People on June 27th, and Stoney’s Wicked Din on June 29th.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair, or enjoy the built-in seating on the grassy hill.  If the weather does not cooperate we hold them inside or at another location.  Fingers crossed!

All our summer reading events, concerts, and movies are free and open to the public.  Summer reading events require registration, so please check with us.
