Kimball Library News 6/17/13

Ready, set …SUMMER READING REGISTRATION is ON!  Please register for the program as a whole and then for each individual event your child or t/ween wants to attend.  Raffle tickets for the t/weens may be submitted now.  Recording minutes for prizes for the younger group may be submitted weekly starting July 1st.  Good luck – we are anticipating lots of winners!

The saga of presenting an activity or two each week for your attention continues.  Before we talk about what’s on the horizon, let’s recap a few you don’t want to miss.  Please come down on Monday, July 1, @ 6:30pm for ‘We DIG Big Trucks’ and also register for Wednesday, July 3, @ 3pm (ages 3-8) for ‘We DIG Ice Cream’.

We also ‘DIG’ Potatoes!  How about getting to the 'root' of this question? Which potato chip do you like best? Take the potato chip test, find out about this surprising invention we love to eat, and, see a bag blaster and how one is made! Come and munch on all the fun at our potato party that is going to take place on Monday, July 8, from 6:30-7:30pm. Register early to avoid disappointment.  This event is for children entering kindergarten through grade 5.

We are going ‘BENEATH THE SURFACE’ with the t/weens.  In keeping with the tradition of combining teens and tweens for summer book discussion, we will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of both July and August. Registration is required. Books can be picked up at the front desk at least 3-4 weeks before the event.

July: We will be discussing 'Liar & Spy' by Rebecca Stead on Wednesday, July 10, from 6:30-8:00pm. Who are YOU 'beneath the surface?' is a question this book asks and answers. We will also be playing two truths and a lie following our discussion. As usual, candy and good fun will be on the menu.

August: 'The One & Only Ivan; by Katherine Applegate

Ready, set …SUMMER READING REGISTRATION is ON as of June 17th!  This year’s theme is underground for all age groups.  The preschool and elementary children will be participating in ‘DIG into Reading’ and t/weens entering grades 6 and up will be able to join ‘Beneath the Surface’.  The younger kids will have a slew of activities to choose from and rewards to obtain, and the older youth will have activities as well as opportunities to win prizes from the weekly raffle.  There is a link on the calendar starting June 17th.  Be sure to come in and get the rest of the registration jazz.

Once your elementary-aged children have registered, they will receive a summer reading bag with the logo that will have inside a reading log to keep track of their minutes and a calendar listing all the amazing programs we will be having this summer at the Kimball Library!  They will also receive a mini newspaper and a coupon for a free kid’s breakfast at Eggie’s, free pretzels at Annie’s, and a free kids’ meal at UNOs.

After they tally the minutes they read each week, come into the library to record them with us. We will enter your reading minutes once each week starting on July 2nd. On week one, they will receive a shovel to put on our walls.  When they have completed the required 100 minutes, they can pick a prize and put a sticker on their shovel to show their progress each week.  Please check in with us at times other than immediately before or after a program to avoid lines and waiting.

Please remember to register for the specific events you want to attend.  On Thursday, June 27, 6:30-7:30pm we will ‘DIG’ THE TOE JAM PUPPET BAND (all ages) SRP KICK-OFF! Bring your family and friends and join us on the patio lawn for live entertainment. This particular show does not demand registration.  In case of inclement weather, we’ll go to Atkinson Academy.

We’ll be featuring at least one summer reading activity per article.  Last week we mentioned that on Monday, July 1, will be hosting ‘We DIG Big Trucks Night’ starting at 6:30pm for all ages.  Next in the queue is ‘We DIG Ice Cream’ on Wednesday, July 3. Search for scoops in the flavor hunt and race to the finish in the dessert dash.  Top it off with an amazing ice cream treat!  Register ages 3-8.

New to the library is a pass for WENHAM MUSEUM.  The museum exhibits and collections are brought to life through a full schedule of programs and special events. All ages are engaged, entertained, and enlightened by special family programs, such as craft making, art, colonial life activities, musical performances, and more. From pre-school to adult, there is something for everyone.

Also regarding museums, please note the Museum of Science is featuring the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Dead Sea Scrolls requires a separate ticket purchase. For library pass holders, tickets for this special exhibit will be $15 for adults, $14 for seniors and $13 for children 3-11 yrs. old, with a maximum purchase of four tickets per library pass.  This special library pass is available to the pass holder only for the date shown on the library pass and is based on the availability of tickets.  Tickets must be purchased in-person only at the Museum box office Red Line and patrons must have their library pass in hand at the time of purchase. It is recommended to arrive early in the day on weekends, school vacations and holidays, as entry times sell out quickly.

On Thursday, June 27, from 6:30-7:30pm we will ‘DIG’ the TOE JAM PUPPET BAND (all ages) Summer Reading Program KICK-OFF! Bring your family and friends and join us on the patio lawn for live entertainment. This particular show does not demand registration, nor do you have to be a resident to take part.  In case of inclement weather, we’ll go to Atkinson Academy.

General registration for all summer reading programs begins on June 17th.  It will be faster and easier for you to register or collect prizes if you don’t do it immediately before or after one of our busy activities.  We want to give you our full attention during registration or prize collection.

For the next several months we’ll be highlighting up and coming summer reading events.  Please refer to our website or library calendar icon for more information.  Don’t hesitate to call us or ask questions about any of the many activities.  Do note that we are continuing to offer summer classes for babies to age 2 (Mother Goose on the Loose), children ages 2-3 (Bitty Books) and preschoolers age 3-6 (Kiddie Lit).  Register in advance for those classes now.

After the excitement of registration and the SRP Kick-Off with Toe Jam Puppet Band, we’ll be rolling out an array of activities each week until August 8 to satisfy a variety of ages.  First up on the docket on Monday, July 1, will be our ‘We DIG Big Trucks Night’ starting at 6:30pm.  This is one of our few events that does not require registration.  Most ‘kids’ anywhere between the ages of 2 and 200 enjoy a chance to see the big rigs up close and personal.  Speed on down to see the fire trucks, tractors, road equipment, and everything big and loud that kids all love! It's all right here in a line, to climb on and enjoy, and according to one source - maybe blow a horn! We are so grateful that our community helpers love the idea of sharing their vehicles with us.  This is a great night to get to say hello to our friends who do the road, police, or fire work in town.  Come on down!

All ages are reminded to stop by for some lovely summer tunes right in our patio area on Thursday, June 20th, at 6:30pm.   We are fortunate to have the fine musicians of the Timberlane Community Band.  The concert will take place in the library courtyard.  Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music!  *If there is a chance of rain, the TCB will make a decision by 4:00 PM to cancel the show.
