Kimball Library News 11/27/12

There’s still time to sign up for the ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ on December 8th as well as December 15th.  For two hours we will entertain your children with a movie, craft, and some stories.  Registration is limited so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.

Details for the third ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ on December 15 from 10:30am-1pm are as follows:  On the third day of Shop and Drop the elves have whispered to me...  Let's make a holiday themed tile decoration!”  Santa's elves will be helping your children make this beautiful item.  The Elves will bring all the supplies to make a holiday scene on tile then seal it with some sparkling modge podge.  If you or your child would like to see a sample, please drop by the library and see the craft on display in our lobby.

The movie selected for the December 15 “Drop ‘n Shop” is: ‘Annabelle’s Wish’.  This heart-gladdening holiday story tells of a calf and a troubled young boy who exchange their most impassioned Christmas wishes. ‘Annabelle's Wish’ is narrated by Randy Travis, and carries a holiday message of grace, goodness, and hope. The assortment of characters will appeal to preschoolers, but the message of decency and friendship is ideal for grade-schoolers.  This movie runs for approximately 53 minutes.

Details for the second ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ on December 8 from 10:30am-12pm are as follows:  On the second day of Shop and Drop the elves have whispered to me...  Let's make a tree ornament!”  Santa's elves will be helping your children make an “I Spy” tree ornament.  If you or your child would like to see a sample, please drop by the library and see the craft on display in our lobby.

The movie selected for the December 8 “Drop ‘n Shop” is: ‘An Elf’s Story’ which is based on the bestselling Christmas tradition ‘The Elf on the Shelf’. Nine year old Taylor McTuttle has reached a crossroads. Does he believe Santa Claus really knows who is naughty or nice? Does he even believe in Santa Claus anymore? An Elf’s Story is the inspirational tale of Chippey, the enthusiastic young scout elf who is assigned by Santa to restore Taylor’s belief in Christmas magic.  This movie runs for approximately 20 minutes.

As a reminder, if you are shopping for e-readers…  Did you know that we have 3 regular Kindles, 1 Kindle touch, and 1 large (DX) Kindle available for borrowing?  Now that the hoopla has died down regarding the Kindle, our library devices have a much shorter waiting list.  If you do not have an e-reader of your own, or if you’d like to read something that we have purchased for our Kindle, then you are in luck!  We have over 50 adult bestselling titles loaded.  We add more titles as time goes on so there is always something new.  Give us a call to put a Kindle on hold for you.  These are perfect for taking on vacation—an entire library in one place!  We also are open to suggestions when it’s your turn to borrow.  Please submit requests and we’ll see if we can accommodate your taste.

In addition to the Kindles mentioned above, we now are also sporting a Nook Simple Touch e-reader.  Our Nook has young people in mind.  This Nook is pre-loaded with the 2013 nominees for the Isinglass and Flume lists.  The Isinglass books are nominated by middle school students, while the Flume titles are nominated by high school students.  This means the Nook is slated for tweens and teens even though adults may be interested in teen fiction.  We are asking that someone the age of 18 or older be the one who actually checks the Nook out because of the replacement cost value.  Please consider checking out the Nook for your tween or teen reader.  It may also be a way to get your reluctant reader started into the world of ebooks.  You may place a hold on the Nook over the phone or from your computer.

Kimball Library News 11/6/12

Remember your commitment!  For those who are taking advantage of the ‘Universal Class’ link on our website, please know that this particular service will be discontinued by the end of this calendar year.  This should serve as a great impetus to get back to class and finish up so you can earn your certificate of completion. Ready, set, go!

Remember Gwendolyn!  Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon for the budding dancers and story lovers in your family on Tuesday, November 27th at 4:30 PM when ballerinas from The European School of Dancing take center stage at the Kimball Library, Atkinson, NH. Author David Ira Rottenberg will read his lovely picture book, Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig, while the dancers perform the story. As an added treat, a mini-movement lesson will be offered to the children in the audience after the performance and Rottenberg will sign copies of his book which will be available for purchase.  This author/dance event is free.   All ages can relate to overcoming obstacles and pursuing what you love.  Bring your cameras for great photo opportunities with the ballerinas or the author.

Remember Hawke!  Lady Hawke, a loveable black Lab, is a certified reading therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International.  She is gentle with children of all ages and her next visit is Tuesday, November 20th, from 4-5pm. We need YOU (emerging readers or any readers) to come and read to Lady Hawke!  She’s waiting to hear some great stories, and only you can help!  Please come, bring your favorite book, or borrow one of ours, and spend some time reading to our friend, Hawke.  Please register for this event.  If no one registers she will not come.

Remember your tummy!  Are you feeling a little peckish?  Just sit back and relax because kids are cooking on Monday, November 19th, from 4:30-5:30pm.  Register your children in grades 3 to 5.  Kids are invited to learn some new habits for the kitchen and to have fun cooking together.  This month on the menu is Chinese fried rice so perhaps it is time to practice with the chopsticks! The fun is in the making and in the eating.  Enrollment is limited so do not delay your registration.

Remember that December is right around the corner!  We are kicking off the holidays with the ever-popular and crafty Felicia Motherway.  On Tuesday, December 4, from 6-8pm it is your night to learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays. The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy. This also is a great gift idea. Even the ‘craft-impaired’ will leave with a tree that looks like it was featured in Better Homes & Gardens.  Felicia does not let anyone leave without a perfect looking tree.  Reservations are required as the class is limited to 20 people.  Materials fee of $30.00 must be paid in advance in order for your registration to be secure.  Please sign up at the circulation desk.  Phone registrations will not be accepted.

Remember that we will be closed for Thanksgiving and the following day (November 22-23).  We will be open on Saturday, November 24.   Please stock up and plan accordingly.
