Kimball Library News 6/25/18

ROCKIN’ ROCKS AND MINERALS: Have you ever started a rock collection? Do you like to learn about the rocks and minerals that make up our earth? Do you know why New Hampshire is called the Granite State?

Join us for a rockin' adventure of learning, viewing and identifying different rocks and minerals on Thursday, July 12th, at 6:30 PM. End with a rock painting you can take home.

Please register kids entering kindergarten through fifth grade in the fall of 2018.

UKULELES for LOAN: That’s right, you may borrow a genuine Mahalo ukulele to practice what you may have learned at our recent workshop, or you can go on youtube or an app and teach yourself.  We have four ukuleles to loan (Kimball Library card holders only, please) that each come in a nifty case.  You can easily tune it from a free app!  This is a terrific time to try something new. Strum up some beautiful music this summer. Ukuleles rock!

HEALTHY COOKBOOK CLUB: Do you enjoy cooking and trying new recipes? If so, why not join our Healthy Cookbook Club that meets the 3rd Monday of each month. The club chooses a different healthy cookbook to dive into each month. Members check out a copy of the cookbook and spend time trying out the various recipes at home. When the group gathers the next month, we discuss the health benefits of the various recipes and share opinions of the meals tried. In addition, participants prepare and bring a sample of a recipe from the cookbook to share with the group.
Register so we know how many cookbooks to have on hand for the next meeting of this healthy and scrumptious event.

PRESCHOOL CAMPS REMINDER: It’s not only about the school aged youth here at Kimball during the summer! We have 6 weeks of camps for the littles.  It’s not too late to register for the following classes:  Mother Goose on the Loose on Mondays for babies & toddlers, Bitty Books Camp on Tuesdays for two and three year-olds, and Kiddie Lit Adventure Camp for ages three to six on Fridays.  All camps start at 10:30 AM and run for six consecutive weeks starting July 2nd. Join us for songs, stories, simple crafts, games, and activities that will make you AND your little one(s) happy.

Full STEAM ahead! In recognition of our work to provide Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math based education programs, Lewis Builders generously donated an educator’s box of KEVA planks. Lewis Builders is prioritizing STEM youth development by partnering with us on a very exciting upcoming event. Read below to find out more!

REAL WORLD STEM ROCKS: We will welcome representatives from Lewis Builders on Tuesday, July 10th at 6:30 PM in a unique demonstration of the equipment they use to achieve outcomes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Watch STEM come to life with a demonstration of a real video drone. Learn the process of planning and building a new housing development. See models of future STEM jobs and talk with the experts yourself!
All ages are welcome, but please note that this program will not be designed to engage our youngest patrons.  Please register on our website or give us a call to reserve your spot for this special evening.

T/WEEN BOOK TALKS ROCK: Join us as we talk together about 'Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie' by Jordan Sonnenblick' and rock out to this book.  Conversation, candy, and chillin'. This is a great read for middle and high school ages.  Copies of this book are available at the main desk. 

Please register t/weens entering grades 5 and up in the Fall of 2018 for this Wednesday, July 11th event that will take place at 6:30 PM.

NEW MATERIALS FOR CHECK OUT: Planning to go for a hike?  Check out our Kimball Backpacks! Yes, you read that correctly, we have backpacks that patrons can borrow. One has a seacoast theme and the other has a mountain theme. The Seacoast backpack contains a compass with instructions, waterproof binoculars, and interesting reading materials such as: ‘The ultimate guide to shells and beach life of the New England Coast’, ‘Birds of the Mid-Atlantic coast’, ‘North Atlantic whale watch’, ‘Freshwater fishes of Northeast’, ‘New Hampshire State Parks Map Guide’, ‘Bicycling NH's Seacoast’ and to explore your own backyard you score an Atkinson Trail Map. 

Our Mountain backpack also contains the Atkinson Trail Map, along with a compass, binoculars, and pamphlets such as: Common trees in the cities & towns of the Northeast & Upper Midwest, White Mountains Trail Map Set covering the Presidential Range, Franconia, Pemigewasset, Crawford Notch, Sandwich Range, Moosilauke, Kinsman Ridge, Evans Notch, North Country and the Mahoosuc Range.  In addition, the backpack has a New Hampshire State Parks Map Guide and the White Mountain Guide: AMC’s Comprehensive Guide to Hiking Trails in the White Mountain National Forest.

These backpacks are available to borrow for a week to Kimball Library card holders.  Kimball patrons must sign a borrowing agreement at time of check out.  Stop by today and check one out.  You never know what you will discover on the trail!
 
STEM TOYS ROCK: Build your brain power with our Magformers and Brainflakes! Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love exploring with STEM toys.  This opportunity will take place on Thursday, July 12th, between 10:30 and 4:30 PM. 
Please register any age who plans to attend. Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects as potential choking hazards.

Kimball Library 6/11/18


Is it summer yet?  If you are like us you are chomping at the bit to get the kids and teens registered for summer reading and to get into the courtyard for some concerts, shows, and activities.  Check your date book and reserve the dates, and check to see if registration is required.  We don’t want anyone to miss out. 

MARIO CART TOURNAMENTS ROCK: Reserve your spot now for this summer’s Mario Kart Wii Tournament!

Whether you've never played before or you are an expert, join us for some fast-paced, big screen, friendly competition-based fun! Each player will compete multiple times in simple one versus one races. The top winners will compete in a Grand Prix cup race to find the winners of the tournament!
Because the only prize received will be the pride of winning, all players can know they are set up for a 'just for fun' environment. Join us, turn the steering wheel, cheer on your friends, and have a fun filled
evening with us.  Youth in grades K through 12 are invited to register and join us on Thursday, July 5th from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.  Just this one time, you can drive as fast as you want!

AFRICA ROCKS: Libraries Rock all over the world, so come 'ROCK' with Africa on Monday, July 9th with African games, stories, and a fun craft. Learn how to make an African Collar and try tasty roasted wheat berries and nutty bananas!

Register youth entering grades K-5 in the Fall of 2018 for this multi-cultural event.

MUSEUM PASS EXPANSION: Hold your hats, you are now able to check out passes to NH State parks!  We have admission to all day-use parks for 2 adults and up to 4 dependents. (Not valid at Hampton Beach State Park - South Beach, Wallis Sands State Park, Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, or the Flume Gorge). Passes are not valid for use at the metered parking or for camping. In the event a park facility is full to capacity, the use of this pass does not guarantee entrance. The pass holder must take his/her place in line with those waiting for admission.  

The pass must be shown to the collector for each park visited. No refunds will be given for any reason. Laminated passes list the specific day of entry on the front of the pass. Passes must be returned to the library by the end of the next business day. Passes may be sealed and placed in the envelope provided and placed in the book drop. Most parks are only open from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day although Monadnock State Park is open year-round. Operating dates and times are weather dependent and subject to change without notice. Check our museum website for further information under the museum pass icon.

CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD COMING UP!: Summer kicks off with all ages concert with Keith Munslow! In his highly interactive triple-whammy show, Keith delivers fun, funky music, lightning-fast cartooning, and hilarious stories that will have grown-ups laughing as much as the kids!  Start your summer right at 6:30 on June 20th.

Not to be outdone, the courtyard continues with another outstanding performance to come by returning Don Campbell! The Don Campbell Trio includes a bassist and Durham, NH musician, Tom Yoder, on fiddle and mandolin.  Their accolades are too many to mention so come on June 21st at 6 PM and see for yourself.  All ages and guests are welcome.
