‘Create & Express’ yourself on February 7th if you are in Grades 2-5 from 4-5pm.  Join us in making large Valentine hearts out of crayon shavings and wax paper. They look beautiful hung from the ceiling or displayed against a window.  Your other option is to give it to your favorite valentine.  This special activity requires registration so please sign up online, drop by, or give us a call.  Seating is limited.

Save this sweet date for kids - Saturday, February 9th, from 11am-12pm for ‘Cookies to Decorate’.  A cookie story will be read first to get us in a decorating mood, and then it's up to you to decorate two cookies and eat them! Do your best artwork and see how it tastes! It could be messy, but it definitely will be delicious.  Registration is required for this fun event.  This is for ages 4-8 only, please.

The lovable Lab is back!  Hawke, the reader dog, will be in for another fun and furry visit on Wednesday, February 20th, from 4-5pm.  We need YOU to register to read to Hawke.  She’s waiting to hear some great stories, and only you can help!  Please come, bring your favorite book, or borrow one of ours, and spend some time reading to our canine friend, Hawke.  Register!! (If no one registers she will not come.)  Parents, no need to worry, Lady Hawke is a trained therapy dog with lots of love and patience.

Atkinson Author, Catherine O'Brien, will be here on Tuesday, February 19th, for a talk and reading of her book, 'The Apple of Discourse'.  The ‘Apple of Discourse’ tells an enthralling love story taking place on a university campus during World War II.  Men were scarce during that time because they were 'over there'.  Women had more opportunities due to this shortage.  Millie White, the daughter of an eccentric professor, finds employment at a local service station.  John McCarran, the son of a dairy farmer, enlists in the Army serving in the Big Red One.  When their paths cross on the university campus three years later, John now a wounded veteran meets and falls in love with Millie.  John has competition despite the overwhelming majority of women.  Millie's father had matched her up with his teaching fellow, deferred from service due to his amblyopia.  The Dean of the College of Business has his eye on her as well.  These young people, though, have the same stripe only they can see.

Catherine O'Brien was born a navy brat, but she spent most of her growing up years in Fremont, NH.  Since childhood, she has been interested in history and writing. She now lives in Atkinson, NH with her husband and twelve year-old daughter.  The ‘Apple of Discourse’ is her first published novel.  Books will be for sale the night of the event.

Planning ahead?  We will be closed on February 18th for Presidents Day.  Stock up in advance and enjoy extra time on those 2 day loans the Friday before the closing.

Get out your paper sack and you’re halfway ready for the Brown Bag Book Club that is geared for children in grades 2-4.  This month’s title is ‘Eve of the Emperor Penguin’ by Mary Pope Osborne which is book #40 in the Magic Tree House series, and the discussion time is on Monday, January 28th, from 4:30-5:30pm.  This book club is held on the 4th Monday of the month. Books are available at the children's desk for you to pick up in plenty of time for reading.  Your child can read this on his/her own or you can read it in tandem.  We always provide the dessert and drinks while we talk about the book we're reading. Have your child’s supper in a bag and give it a try.

This is just a reminder that you don’t have to start at the beginning of a session to take part in our preschool classes.  We currently have 3 sessions of Kiddie Lit (ages 3-6 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and a NEW class on Friday), Bitty Books (ages 2-3 on Tuesdays), Mother Goose on the Loose (infants to age 2 on Mondays), and book discussions for 3 distinct age groups: teen~ grades 9-12), tween~ grades 5-8, and Brown Bag Club grades 2-4.  Please register for these classes.  Also remember that we have PJ Peeps for ages 4-8 every Friday night, and you may drop in with pajama-donned kids at 7pm for a story and snack.

Another reminder is that we are very fortunate to have some beautiful photography by Ron Wybranowski currently being displayed in the library.  Ron is a serious amateur photographer just starting to publicly display his work. His primary focus is on nature photography, with a goal of capturing singular images of the beautiful scenery, flowers, birds and animals which surround us all.  Ron has very generously offered to raffle one of his photographs from the exhibit.  The winner can pick which photo they would like and he will mat & frame a 16X 20 for them.  Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The winner will be drawn on Monday, February 4th at 3:00 PM.  All proceeds go to the Friends of the Kimball Library for library events and programs.

The exhibit "Impressionism in Photography" has been on display in the library since late December.  On Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30pm, the photographer, Ron Wybranowski, will be here to discuss his work.  He will talk about how he has expanded his photographic view from clear, sharp, in-focus images of nature and wildlife to include these diffused and brilliantly colored images of many of the same scenes.

The techniques used are very long exposures, sometimes aided by multiple neutral density filters, and panning the camera either horizontally or vertically to gather the sweep of the scene.  The subject matter remains much the same: sunrise, sunset, the seashore, forests and fall foliage. This impressionistic approach requires new "eyes" to see a final image which evokes a much more emotional response. The 10 images in this exhibit are the result of those efforts.   Ron will talk about the images on display and where, when, and how these and others were taken.  He will also present two short slide shows of his other work.

Kimball Library News 1/8/13

The iPad has landed in the children’s room!  The best ‘Friends of the Library’ ever presented us with two iPads for in-house circulation in the children’s room.  We have loaded them up with 40 book and early literacy apps. You will be able to check them out to a designated area by the Children’s Information Desk, and use them for one hour.  Most of the apps are appropriate for preschool age children and toddlers. There are some apps that are geared for elementary age as well.  This is a tool for you to use with your child, and we have an agreement for you to sign before doing so.

By signing our form when checking out the iPad, you agree to the following: ‘The iPad is free to Kimball Library users to borrow in-house.  Only adult residents over the age of 18 with a current library card in good standing will be allowed to borrow the iPad.  The iPad will be loaned out for one hour at a time.  It must be used only at the designated tables in front of the Children’s Information Desk.  Parental supervision is required at all times.  No downloads permitted.  If there is an app you wish to see on the iPad, please inform the librarian and it will be determined if it can be purchased.  The iPad must be returned directly to a library employee to ensure proper check-in.  Failure to do this will result in a fine of $10.00.’  Please stop by the children’s room and have a look at our latest hot item!

‘Craft’ a new year’s resolution by signing the children up for ‘Create & Express’ classes on Thursdays from 4-5pm.  On January 17th you should join us in painting wooden penguin masks. The masks will then be used at the January Jack Frost jamboree.  You get to show off your art work at the jamboree then take it home!  This craft is best suited for children grade 1 and up, and registration is required.

We have two other ‘Create & Express’ classes prepared for January as well.  On January 24th we’ll be making giant paper snowflakes for kids in grades 3 and up.  On January 31st we’ll be making snowman snow globes for grades K-3.  Each of these classes meets from 4-5pm and registration is required.  Miss Judy will be your instructor for each class.  If you’d like to see a sample of any of these Thursday crafts please visit our lobby.

Make a new year’s resolution to travel, and start on January 15th at 6:30pm!  Journey down to the equator and explore Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands through the camera lens of Dennis Krause.  He and his wife recently visited the Galapagos with Lindblad Expeditions for an adventure of a lifetime.   Their voyage aboard the National Geographic “Islander” traveled to seven different islands home to many species of mammals, reptiles and birds.   Each island was inhabited by a unique group of creatures ranging from playful sea lions and sea turtles to primitive marine iguanas and giant tortoises to colorful blue-footed boobies and magnificent frigate birds.  Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and see up close and personal what he observed years ago and what makes the Galapagos Islands the very special place it is today.  Join Dennis and his visual presentation of his day to day experiences on this ageless group of islands…The Galapagos.  Refreshments will be served on this unique travel odyssey and, as most library events are - this program is sponsored by the generous Friends of the Kimball Library.

Pssst…we still have a few openings for the Tootie Flutes (ages 3-5 and ages 5-7) classes.  Give us a shout to register.
