As summer reading begins to wind down, it’s noteworthy to
mention that raffle prizes for t/weens are still being distributed. Get
all your tickets in the jar ASAP for prize redemption. The final day to
submit tickets for the jaris August 2nd. Remember the reading challenge? If at least 100 teens registered and got 1000 tickets in the jar by August 2nd, the Youth Services Director (Kathy Watson) is going to have crazy hair from August 8-31st. Get reading and submitting tickets—you still have time to win!
For children in grades K-5, most should be finished collecting prizes by August 12th.
If you are away on vacation you may redeem for prizes when you return.
All summer reading prizes, dig into reading shovels, etc will be put
away by August 19th. Please redeem your minutes and collect your loot.
Wednesday, August 14, at
6:30pm is the final combination t/ween reading discussion for this
summer. In the fall we’ll be back to our usual routine of tweens
(grades 5-8) meeting the first Wednesday of the month and the teens
(grades 9-12) meeting the second Wednesday of the month from
6:30-7:30pm. In August we (grades 5-12) are discussing ‘The One and
Only Ivan’ and, as usual, eating candy. Nom nom! Ivan (a gorilla) is
an unforgettable first-person narration story of friendship, art, and
hope. Newcomers are encouraged! We have books available at the main
desk. Bring a friend and make a friend.
All
summer reading participants get a chance to celebrate their successes
by participating in the finale that is being hosted on Thursday, August
8,starting at 6:30pm. Music will be performed by The Squeezebox
Stompers in the courtyard, and when you’re not smiling or dancing you
can be eating an ice cream sundae from our famous buffet. You’ll be
able to choose from our many toppings. Pack up the family and come on
down! We’d appreciate registrations from SRP participants so we’ll know
how much ice cream and candy to buy. Thank you for your cooperation.
Make a date for Uno’s on August 22nd! We’re telling you about it now so you can mark in the phone or date book and start to invite guests. Go to Uno's (Haverhill/Plaistow line) anytime on August 22ndfrom
11:30am to closing and the Friends of the Kimball Library will get up
to20% of your total bill. This is also good on take-out orders.
All you have to do is pick up a coupon at the Kimball Library or print
one off our website and give it to the hostess when placing your order.
This is a GREAT way to support all those events you love to attend at
the library. Please take care to have your coupon with you and you
mention it to your server—they cannot give credit without the slip of
paper. Bring your friends out to lunch or dinne rwith you and get even
more bang for the library buck! :)

The
summer reading rush continues. Children,
tweens, and teens may still register to read and win prizes. We still have some available places in a few
of our events, and some events do not require registration. We are attempting to remind everyone of event
etiquette, i.e. if you have registered for an event and if for any reason your
child is unable to attend please call us the moment that you know this. We have a waiting list for most activities at
least ten children deep and your absence is unnecessarily taking a place from
another child. Thank you for your
cooperation in this matter.

remain at the time of publication in the following events: ‘We DIG Mad Science’
for all ages on July 24 (no registration necessary), ‘We DIG Fairy Frolics’ for

The
summer reading saga continues. Children,
tweens, and teens may still register to read and win prizes. We still have some available places in a few
of our events, and some events do not require registration. We have a good problem this year, i.e. many
of our activities are booked to capacity.
We apologize if you have attempted to register and are unable to do
so. We have a certain amount of staff
and supplies and are unable to accommodate everyone at once. If you are on a waiting list it’s possible
that a spot may open up for you. Thank
you for liking our events so much!
Spaces
remain at the time of publication in the following events: ‘Beneath the
Surface’ Frisbee Show & Playshop for Grades 5 and up on July 17
(registration required), ‘We DIG Mad Science’ for all ages on July 24 (no
registration necessary), ‘We DIG Fairy Frolics’ for kindergarten through grade
5 on July 25 (registration required), ‘Beneath the Surface’ Jewelry Making for

We
are excited to have some of our favorite performers with us on Wednesday, July
24, from 6:30 to 7:30pm. MAD SCIENCE is
back! This fun-filled, science
performance, 'Dig into Science!' is designed to get kids excited about the
science that happens underneath the ground! From the layers of the earth to the
critters that live in the soil to natural phenomena that occur underground,
kids will discover some amazing things as we dig deeper! The science of
'digging deep' is presented with topics such as earth's layers, stalactites and
stalagmites, soggy soil, underground creatures, tectonic plates and
earthquakes, and volcanoes. 'Dig into Science!' is designed to entertain and
educate. All ages are welcome to attend without registration. Most
concepts are geared for elementary through high school.
We
have a non-summer reading event on the horizon that we are sure will attract
both teens and adults. On Tuesday, July
16, from 6:30-8pm we’ll be ‘Harnessing History: On the Trail of New Hampshire's
State Dog, the Chinook.’ This program
looks at how dog sledding developed in New Hampshire and how the Chinook played
a major role in this story. Explaining how man and his relationship with dogs
won out over machines on several famous polar expeditions, Bob Cottrell covers
the history of Arthur Walden and his Chinooks, the State Dog of New
Hampshire. Bob's Chinook, aptly named ‘Tug’ will be at the presentation.
The
Chinook is our state dog. The Chinook, a
sled and work dog, is the only breed to have originated in New Hampshire and
one of the few created in America. The breed was started by Arthur Walden in
Wonalancet NH in 1917. The bill was the
idea of a group of seventh graders at the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School in
Bedford.
Our
speaker, Bob Cottrell, holds an MA from the Winterthur Program in Early
American Culture in Delaware. The founding director of the Remick Country
Doctor Museum in Tamworth, he is now the Curator of the Henney History Room at
the Conway Public Library, a Board member at the Conway Historical Society, and
President ex-officio of the Tamworth Historical Society. He serves as an
independent history and museum consultant.

It’s
not too late to register for summer reading.
Please sign up for the program as a whole and then for each individual
event your child or t/ween wants to attend.
Raffle tickets for the t/weens may be submitted now. Recording minutes for prizes for the Dig into
Reading program may be submitted weekly starting July 1st. If you
don’t play, you can’t win. Play!
The
saga of presenting an activity or two each week for your attention continues. Before we talk about what’s on the horizon, once
again let’s recap a few you don’t want to miss.
Please register and come down on Monday, July 8, @ 6:30pm as ‘We DIG Big
Potatoes’ with kids (grades K-5) and also register for Wednesday, July 11, @
6:30pm (grades 5-12) for the ‘Liar & Spy’ t/ween book event.
We ‘DIG’ toad abodes! Dig into designing your own container garden
for the mythical creature of your choice. Pixies, toads, or fairies will be
welcome after you’ve created a home for them using natural and store bought
materials. (Think dish garden but much more creative.) Each of the class
times on Thursday, July 11th are offering the same exact
module. Please select only one class at either 4:30 or 6:30pm.
Register children in kindergarten to grade 5 in person, online, or over the phone.
We are ‘MAD’ about dinosaurs and we ‘DIG’ dinosaurs, too! Mad Science is back in town and they are
offering a special class for kids entering grades 1-4. This hands-on science workshop allows
children ages 6-9 to see how scientists learn about dinosaurs. Your readers
will dig for fossils, identify our extinct friends, and even get a cast of a
dinosaur tooth to take home! Register to attend on Monday, July 15, from
6:30-7:30pm. This class is limited to 25
children maximum and is geared for the suggested ages. Please only sign up
children who can definitely come and fit in the grade/age perimeters. Residents
only, please, for this module.
We are
going ‘BENEATH THE SURFACE’ with Todd Brodeur, two-time World Frisbee Champion! Join us for not only an amazing show of what
Todd can do, but after the show he’ll have Frisbees for all attendees to
practice some of his tricks. This
exciting event is on Wednesday, July 17th, at 6:30pm at Atkinson Academy.
Two-time
Freestyle Frisbee Champion, Todd Brodeur, educates, entertains and motivates
his audience with captivating Frisbee shows and interactive playshops. He
promotes staying active throughout your life by playing disc sports. He focuses
on healthy lifestyles, creativity, flexibility and balance, all aimed at
improving self-esteem and confidence. World Class Frisbee Shows and Playshops
teaches the next generation new ways to learn Frisbee skills that increase
hand-eye coordination and all will have fun and success while exercising.
Frisbee
flipping has been part of American pop culture for over 50 years. Across the
globe, the popularity of Frisbee sports has never been greater. Now you and
your group can watch a master of the craft and also learn and improve your
freestyle skills. This simple space age object will bring fun and excitement to
any group or class. Students will be inspired to play more Frisbee, be active,
be self-aware and continue to discover.
This event
is for ages 10 and up–or those ‘entering’ grade 4 and up. We encourage the
adults of the youth to stay for the show and participate in the playshop. Please
register all youth and adults who will be in attendance. This is a family event
for the older ‘kids’.
