Kimball Library News 3/24/14

We can’t make spring happen on the outside, but we can put a spring in your step on the inside!  Join us on Tuesday, April 22nd, at 6:30pm and you’ll be getting a smile on your face and swaying your toes to the tunes as you listen to AKSARA.

AKSARA, a 6 woman a cappella ensemble from Southern NH, will perform at the Kimball Library on the evening of the 22nd and you’ll definitely want to be here, as well as invite your friends to share in the music.   AKSARA has performed in many local venues over the last 16 years and has produced 5 CD recordings.  AKSARA performs a variety of selections in many styles that are compelling, renewing and healing.

The group is part of Inner Harmony Music, a non-profit organization.  Additional information is available at http://www.victoriaschneider.com/music_aksara_about.html  This free event is sponsored by the wonderfully generous Friends of the Kimball Library.  Refreshments will be served.

National Library week is April 13-19, and we’d like to celebrate YOU, the best patrons in the world.  We’ll have a garnished sheet cake in the lobby in the late afternoon of April 19th.  Please stop in and share a slice with us.

Also in April will be the start of the spring vacation week activities which runs into the month of May.  Stay tuned for future articles on the details of each event.  Read on!

First out of the box will be the usual ‘Mother Goose on the Loose class’ for babies through age 2.  There is no set time of year to join us, but now that the weather is a bit warmer you may consider bringing in your child, grandchild, or baby that you care for.  Mother Goose is based off the national curriculum and each Monday at 10:15 we engage in songs, finger plays, rhymes, simple stories, and activities geared to keep your littlest ones tuned in.  Many little ones start here before trying the more traditional story times for ages 2-6.  Register now!

The children’s room display case is located just to your right as you enter the children’s wing of the library.  Each month collections from children inhabit the case while onlookers ‘ohh’ and ‘ahh’ over what the little people have gathered.  We have had the fun of seeing Disney pins, Legos, elephants, dinosaurs, trains, La La Loopsie, monster trucks, Little Pet Shop, and more.  You may be wondering how your children can get their collections in.  Please just stop at the children’s desk or give us a call so we can put your children on the list.  The collections stay in for one month and we like to book up in advance.  We don’t like to duplicate from month to month, but it’s certainly fine to have the same type of items as long as we spread them out.  Talk to your children and call us today.

The library courtyard project is going from possibility to reality. How can you help be a part of the important effort?

If you have ever been to an outdoor performance in the back patio area at the library, you will know that this is a unique venue that provides unbelievable acoustics for the performers and audience alike.   We are embarking on a major fundraising project to add some permanent sitting walls with stairs, expanded walkways, and patio/performing area.   Low voltage lighting will be added as well as a sprinkler system.   If you’d like to make financial contribution, please go to the yellow DONATE button on the website  to make a credit card donation or click on the ”more courtyard info” below that post on our website main page for further information on the project including sponsorship levels and advertising/donation opportunities.  If you don’t like to click buttons a good old-fashioned check earmarked for ‘library courtyard project’ will be gratefully accepted.  It takes a village!

Library buddies, library buddies!  Don’t miss out on six weeks of undivided attention from a middle or high school student paired up with your child (kindergarten through grade 3).  Each week the younger and older pairs will read to each other and get to know one another.  Half of the time spent will be on predetermined projects or crafts, as well as board games or card games.  You’d be surprised how much your little ones like the attention of the ‘big kids’ and may be willing to participate in activities or reading that they may not typically like to do on their own.

The library buddy program lasts six weeks on consecutive Wednesdays from 4-5pm starting March 19th.  Buddies are expected to commit to all six weeks unless otherwise prearranged.  Non residents may register starting March 14 if the program isn’t full.  Registration for all is required on the library website calendar of events.  Please speak with a librarian in the youth department if you have any questions.

Our second week of buddies (March 26th) will have a special guest and you’ll get some experience with a musical instrument and play some musical instrument games.  No more hints.  Okay, just one.  Think woodwinds.

Big buddies must be in middle or high school and may receive community service hours for their commitment.  Register online, but if you haven’t ever participated in the program before then talk to Kathy Watson directly before March 19th so you’ll know the ropes ahead of time.

Get a dose of culture on Tuesday, March 25th, from 6:30-8:00pm right at your local library.  “The Life and Times of Norman Rockwell” will be the topic and this presentation will be featuring local historian Gus Reusch.  Learn about America's most beloved artist.  Many Rockwell prints will be on display.
