Kimball Library News 2/19/13

Dress Me Up is an organization dedicated to helping young ladies in the community find the perfect prom dress for free.  Young ladies in need of a dress for prom can come into Kimball Library on Wednesday, March 13th, from 4:00-7:00pm and try on free dresses.  Please bring a student ID to verify that the dress you want is actually for a 2013 prom.  There are over 60 dresses to choose from in various sizes, colors, and designs!  This event is sponsored by Timberlane Regional High School and is run by two dedicated and caring students--Emily and Jacqueline.

If you have a stylish dress in good condition to donate, (please remember these are for young ladies in the fashion of 2013), you may drop it off at TRHS before March 1.  From March 1 to March 13 you may drop off the dress at the school (TRHS) or at the library (Kimball).  Thanks in advance for your cooperation with these dates.  If you happen to miss out on this great opportunity, please take note that remaining dresses will be on display a second time at the library on Wednesday, April 24th, from 4-7.

Our renowned “Library Buddies” program is back for the 6th consecutive year.  This popular six week series will be running from March 13 to April 17 on Wednesdays from 4-5pm.  Little buddies in grades K-3 can have an older buddy in grades 6-12 to read with, create projects with, play games with, and hang with.  Registration is a commitment to all six weeks, barring sickness, unless you make arrangements in advance.

Also, we are looking for capable teens and tweens (middle school and older only, please) to play the part of the big buddy.  Please note the six week commitment and ask to talk to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, if you are interested.   Buddies are expected to commit to all six weeks unless pre-arranged.  Generally, the first thirty minutes should be devoted to reading followed by puzzles, games, crafts or coloring. Crafts will be pre-selected for you.  All readers’ hours will be recorded. Your time spent with us may also be used toward community service hours (older buddies).  This year we have online registration for each of the age groups.  Please be careful to click on little buddies (K-3) or big buddies (grades 6-12).  This little buddy portion of program is for Kimball card holders only, please.  Registration is mandatory.  Non-resident big buddy applicants will be considered.

Kimball Library News 2/12/13

Want to make some cool Lego creations?  Drop in on Tuesday, February 26th, from 11am-1pm. Come build skyscrapers, mystery scenes or something creative with our Legos or Duplo blocks. See how clever you can be! It’s more fun to build with others.  Please don't bring your own Legos as it's hard to keep track of them. Come for all or part of the time.  Bring a friend (ages 4 and up).  No registration is necessary.

Do you have too many of the same old books?  Join us for a ‘Book Swap Party’ on Thursday, February 28th, from 1-2pm.  Do you have books that you've read already two or three times? Or, books you'd like to change for new reads? Bring them to the library and take home a different book! If you bring 3 books, you can swap for 3 because that's how it works! It’s fun to get some new reads and let someone else have your old ones. We'll also have cookies and punch while we choose the books.  We work up an appetite while we swap.  Grades 1-5, please register in advance.

Do you need a little crafty light in your life?  Grades 3 and up can come and enjoy the art of decoupage while making a jolly snowman.  Finish with a tea light and watch how your project glows!  Please register in advance and make note of the age selection.  We have limited seats, and we don’t want you to miss out on Thursday, February 28th, from 6:30-7:30pm.

Kids, do you need a fun way to burn off some energy?  Join in the fun on Friday, March 1st, from 1:30-2:30pm as we play games and enjoy moving with a parachute.  Songs and surprises will make this a workout you won't want to miss!  Please register in advance so we’ll know how many parachutes we need.

Would you like an interesting way to expand your knowledge of George Washington’s runaway slave?   Join us on Wednesday, March 6th, from 6:30-8pm for a living history program ‘If am Not for Myself, Who Will Be for Me?’.  Our guest performer will have you believing that she is the runaway slave.

Oney Judge Staines, according to the constitution, was only three-fifths of a person.  To her masters, George and Martha Washington, she was merely 'the girl.'  All she wanted was the freedom to control her own actions, but her account of escaping the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia, fleeing north and establishing a life in New Hampshire is not a typical runaway story.  Portrayed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, Oney's tale provides an alternative perspective on the new nation's social, political and economic development, from one whose personal experience so contradicted the promise of the principles embodied in the nation's founding documents.

This program is made possible by a grant from the NH Humanities Council and the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Refreshments will be served.

Kimball Library News 2/5/13

The tweens and teens in grades 5-12 are invited to participate in a SWEET Contest on Tuesday, February 26th from 6:30-7:45pm.  The ‘SWEET Contest’ rules are fairly simple.  You can make anything sweet (candy, cookies, cake, smoothies, etc).  The creation has to be primarily made in the library and you can use the library microwave in the making of your creation if necessary.  If you need to do a small amount prep at home that is acceptable, but note that the more that is done in front of the judges the better. You may bring your own blender or other tools you may need. (Translation: Have everything you need because it is unlikely we will.)  You have thirty minutes to create your entry so practicing at home first as to how long it will take you is always the best idea.  You must work alone without parental help or a partner.   How much is done here and your creativity count a lot!   Use a theme and build off of that to pump up your presentation score.

The judges will use presentation, creativity, and tastiness as their criteria and rate each category on a scale of 1-5. At the end, the highest score wins a prize.  If there are at least 10 entries there will be a runner-up prize.   The judges will not allow a tie.  After the judging is over, you’ll be able to sample your competitor's creations while they sample yours.   Please make enough for at least a dozen samples.
Registration is required.  Invite your friends to compete-they do not have to be residents, but they need to register just like you do.  Let’s see who is the king or queen of sweets!

Grades 2 and up are invited to try their hands at ‘Creative Candle Making’ that will be taking place on Wednesday, February 27th, from 3-4:30pm.  Our guest, Carolyn Nenart, from the Wenham Museum will be giving a candle making demonstration and tutorial for registered children.  Participants will learn to make dipping candles and ice candles.   Join in the fun with Miss Celeste and share in the art of candle making.  Register before the class is closed.  Seating is limited.

Everybody loves animals, and this is why Michelle’s Menagerie is coming to Kimball Library on Wednesday, February 27th from 6:30-7:30pm.  If you really want to learn about mammals, this is the event for you.  Mammals are fascinating animals that are covered with fur or hair.  You will learn about the many different types of fur.  This show contains seven mammals and one surprise guest that will not be fluffy, furry, or covered with quills!  The seven mammals that will be here are the chinchilla, ferret, cavy, hedgehog, rabbit, domestic descented skunk, tenrec, and a surprise guest!

Register CHILDREN (we know they will be accompanied by adults).  This event is developmentally geared for children in grades K-6.  Preschoolers are welcome if they sit with their parents.  We have a limit of 50 children.

Michelle's Menagerie combines entertainment and education to create an exciting learning experience that will long be remembered! All programs provide an opportunity to learn about animals and their importance in the world. This is not a petting zoo; it is an awesome wildlife encounter.  Visit www.michellesmenagerie.com to sneak an advance peek at the furry critters and information on her education live animal shows.

We had a fabulous turn-out and fun at our 3rd Annual Jack Frost Jamboree.  We’d like to give a special shout-out to Eastern Mountain Sports in Salem, NH for bringing a wide array of snowshoes for folks to try and giving out some amazing raffle prizes.  Our only request for next year is more snow!
Please be aware that will be closed on February 18th for Presidents’ Day.  Stock up in advance and enjoy extra time on those 2 day loans the Friday before the closing.
