Kimball Library News 12/13/11

The youth services department at the library is in the midst of an overhaul. This will require some need on our part to ‘ignore’ our regularly scheduled programs while we recreate ourselves. We are asking for your patience through our transitioning. Except for teen and tween book discussions, there will be no children’s events offered from Dec 27-Jan 17. This gives you a chance to revive and regroup after all the holiday hoopla, and it gives us a chance to plan 6 weeks of activities and introduce you to some new classes for children at the library. There will be multiple offerings for all ages of preschool from birth to age 6 in six week sessions, and after we pick up steam there will be more opportunities for elementary age children also. Take care to note that regularly scheduled preschool story times as well as the Friday Night Read & Feed will take a rest over the vacation week and a bit into the New Year. Do not take a rest from getting some books for everyone. You’ll just have to do the reading and prepare the craft for a few weeks for your little ones. Not to worry, we think you’ll do a great job.

Part of our re-organization revolves around the retirement of our long-standing Children’s Librarian-Carolyn Birr. Carolyn is known and loved by many children and adults and her full-time dedication will certainly be missed. She has served in children’s lives at Kimball Library for 26 years. She also has been a dedicated part of the ‘Friends of the Library’ and was instrumental in her input in the building project. Mrs. Birr is a name that many children first associate with when coming to the library for stories and books. Even the littlest of children quickly learn to say ‘brrrrrrr.’ We are incredibly fortunate that she will remain with us as a part-time member of our staff. Please take time out of your schedule to help us honor and celebrate her presence on Wednesday, December 28th, from 11:30-2:30pm. There will be celebratory cake as long as it lasts. (Sweet-tooth folks should come early!) Do drop by to congratulate her on her wonderful years of service and to thank her for sticking with us.

Stepping up to the plate (but certainly can’t fill her shoes!) is Kathy Watson who will now not only oversee the teen life, but also children’s events and classes as well. We’ll also be adding a new staff member to pitch in for the implementation of some children’s services. Stay tuned for future announcements regarding new staff. Once again, we appreciate your patience in the interim.

Make time for yourself this season by stopping in to check out a book, music, or movie or by jumping online to check out an ebook or audio book just for you. Take time for quiet by dropping by to read the paper or peruse a magazine. We have a lot of new holiday movies that are family friendly as well as dvds that are just for adults on our shelves. Here is just a little sampler: Holiday Collector’s Set Volumes 2 and 4, The Smurfs, Snow Men, Christmas Mail, Dear Santa, Beethoven’s Christmas, The Night Before the Night Before Christmas, A Golden Christmas: The Second Tail, All-Nighter Before Christmas, The Santa Incident, and Christmas Lodge to name a few. These titles and more may be just the quiet breath of fresh air that you need.

We’ll be closed for holiday hours at the end of the month of December on Saturday, December 24th and on Monday, December 26th. We will also be closed on Monday, January 2nd. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!

The third upcoming ‘Holiday Drop n’ Shop’ still has a few places available on Saturday, December 17th, from 10:30am-1:00pm. We’ll show the movie promptly at 10:30am to be followed by a craft that will take a bit of time. For this craft you MUST bring a plain pillowcase to decorate. The craft starts at noon, but we DO have a guest from the North Pole that is expected to interrupt the festivities as well as some cherubic voices so our ending time may not be exact. But we’d still like you to return by 1pm in case your little angel is ready and waiting.

Please note that we require waivers for children ages 6-9 and you may not just drop them off even if they have been pre-registered. ***Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. In any case, ALL AGES MUST REGISTER.

On this particular Saturday Holiday Drop n’ Shop, there are variations to the prior Saturdays. 1. The MOVIE: The Santa Incident (88 min)/CRAFT: Festive holiday pillowcase. (Your second reminder—you MUST bring a pillowcase with you in order to participate.) Please indicate 'YES' on the online registration form if you plan to stay for the craft when you sign up for this activity.

Don’t let December slip away without fun and furry opportunities to increase your child’s literacy. For the last time in 2011, Lady Hawke the reader dog will be here on Wednesday, December 21st, from 4-5pm. Hawke is a very busy black Lab who loves to be read to by readers of all ages. Her time at the library requires registration so that everyone will get a turn and that Hawke doesn’t break up her day unnecessarily. Throw Hawke a bone by registering and attending her literary circle. She’ll definitely wag her tail for that!

Please note that we are in the midst of change that requires more staff education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom. We are doing everything we can do serve you best.

Take care to note that regularly scheduled preschool story times as well as the Friday Night Read & Feed will take a rest over the vacation week and a bit into the New Year. There will be more information on that in future articles. Do not take a rest from getting some books for everyone, it’s just that you’ll have to do the reading and prepare the craft for a few weeks.

Also, we’ll be closed for holiday hours at the end of the month of December on Saturday, December 24th and on Monday, December 26th. We will also be closed on Monday, January 2nd. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!

In addition to the consortium, we have purchased ebooks that are part of that pool just for Kimball Library card holders. There also are apps available for the iPad and iPouch touch with this same service. You can download and read ebooks without charge. The links will automatically expire after two weeks unless you decide to send them back early. Why pay for books if you can get them from us? Visit our website www.kimballlibrary.com and click on ‘Downloadable Books’ for information regarding device compatibility as well as the myriad of title choices. Kimball Library News 11/22/11

Take care not to miss out on registrations for programs as we may have a space or materials limit. This would be particularly true of popular children’s or teen events as well as adult programs that may draw a large crowd. Don’t be disappointed—register early.

You can still register to make a boxwood tree with Felicia Motherway. You’ll have a beautiful long-lasting, elegantly designed holiday tree made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. Pay when you register. This class will take place on Thursday, December 1, from 6-8pm.

The upcoming first ‘Holiday Drop n’ Shop’ still has places available. We’ll show movie to be followed by a simple craft. Please send the kids with movie snacks and spill-proof beverages. Pillows are also welcome if they prefer to sprawl out rather than sit in chairs. You’ll fa la la all the way home! (Please note that we require waivers for children ages 6-9.) ***Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. ALL AGES MUST REGISTER. MOVIE: All-Nighter Before Christmas (99 min)/CRAFT: Sparkling Holiday Ornament. Indicate 'YES' on the online registration form if you plan to stay for the craft when you register. This event will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:30am-12:30pm.

Registration is also required for the upcoming ‘T/ween Holiday No-Bake, Bake-Off!’ taking place on Tuesday, December 20th, from 6:30-8pm. The Teen Holiday 'No-Bake, Bake-Off!' rules are fairly simple. You can make a drink, appetizer or dessert that has a December holiday theme. It has to be primarily made in the library and you can use our microwave to heat up your creation. If you want to do some prep at home that is acceptable. You are allowed to bring your own blender. You have thirty minutes to create your entry. You may work alone or with a partner, and you must be sure to bring everything you need for materials.

The judges will consider presentation, creativity and tastiness as their criteria and rate each category on a scale of 1-5. At the end, the highest score wins a 'cheap and worthless' prize. The judges will not allow a tie. After the judging is over, you'll be able to sample your competitors’ creations while they sample yours. This event is open only to youth in grades 5-12.

Please note that we are in the midst of change that requires more staff education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom.

Also, we’ll be closed for holiday hours at the end of the month of December on Saturday, December 24th and on Monday, December 26th. Happy Holidays to everyone.

Kimball Library News 11/15/11

Last week you were promised some details regarding upcoming holiday events, and we hope you did your part by penciling in those dates. It’s now time to get out the indelible ink and stamp them in. We will add to the list as time goes on.
We are kicking off the holidays with the ever-popular and crafty Felicia Motherway. On Thursday, December 1, from 6-8pm it is your night to learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays. The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy. This also is a great gift idea. Even the ‘craft-impaired’ will leave with a tree that looks like it was featured in Better Homes & Gardens. Reservations are required as the class is limited to 20 people. Materials fee of $30.00 must be paid in advance in order for your registration to be secure. Please sign up at the circulation desk.

For children on Saturdays (December 3rd, 10th, and 17th) will be our ever popular ‘Holiday Drop N’ Shop’ from 10:30am-12:30pm on the first two dates. On the 17th, we will end at 1pm. The ‘dropping off’ part is for children ages 6 and up who can be left in our care by signing our release forms. We’ll occupy them with a movie and fun in our large meeting room while you shop or wrap gifts. The movie will be shown first followed by a simple craft class. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. There will be a different craft and movie each week. Give us a call or come get a brochure detailing our movie schedule.

As for the details on the holiday drop n’ shop crafts... On December 3rd, the craft will entail designing a sparkling holiday ornament for your tree or perhaps for that of your teacher or best friend. On December 17th, the elves will assist you in sanding and painting holiday coasters. These not only make a thoughtful gift, but also a great keepsake. On December 17th, you’ll need to stay a little bit longer to design a decorative pillow case. You will definitely need to bring your own pillowcase from home for this. You will be rocking out your bedroom with a festive pillow, or, if the holiday spirit strikes you, you might wrap it up for someone you love. And shhhhh, don’t tell anyone that we said so, but there will be a special treat on December 17th. Rumor has it that Santa is coming to town and will pop by Kimball Library.

We also have more surprises around the corner for kids in January. Kids in grade 5 will get a lot more opportunities to join in on some events traditionally limited to grades 6 and up. Stories and crafts may be added and/or rearranged for preschoolers. Stay tuned! The best way to keep up is to get news directly sent to your inbox twice a month. Please ask us to add you to our list. This is an efficient way to stay abreast of the newest events and we only send twice a month.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.

Also note that we are making changes that require more education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom.

This wonderful 9 year old Labrador retriever is very patient and loves being read to by children. Hawke is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International and loves her visits with new and experienced readers. When she's not reading, Hawke lives in Plaistow with her sister and brother Labs and human family.

‘The dog encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won’t laugh at them if they make a mistake or stumble over a word, but rather sit next to them and enjoy the story being read to them. The children learn to associate reading with being with the dog, and begin to view reading in a positive way. Over time, the child’s reading ability and confidence can improve because they are practicing their skills, which will make them enjoy reading even more.' (from Therapy Dogs International)

Got holiday fever? We have the program for you on Monday, November 21, from 6-8pm. Register and learn to make a cornucopia arrangement. Kimball Library News 10/25/11

We are learning some new vocabulary with ‘Words with Teens’ on Tuesday nights once a month. Thus far we have played ‘Balderdash’, ‘Wordsters’, and ‘Scattegories’. It would be hard to choose a favorite! If you are in grades 6-12 you are invited to register and join us. We are a cool group that’s not too cutthroat and we’d love some more players. Our next gathering is Tuesday, November 15th, at 6:30pm. Register yourself and friends are welcome if you register them. We have word games here, but if you have a favorite you’re welcome to bring yours and teach us to play.

Saturdays once a month at the library are a great time for kids to gather and enjoy a free movie. Make a note in your electronic calendar or in the good old-fashioned date book to remind yourself about the Saturday Cinema coming up on November 19th at 10:30am. This is a fun film for all ages. Vroom! Vroom! Pack up the kids and you may leave the building if they are at least age 6 with a permission slip signed or stick around and enjoy the show for ages 5 and under. We appreciate your registrations in advance. Please bring movie snacks, candy, or bottled drinks along with pillows if the kids prefer to sack out on the floor. Make our Saturday shows part of your family traditions.

It’s time to start thinking about adding a delightful little extra to your Thanksgiving table or bringing along a beautiful hostess gift for the upcoming holiday. Here at the library you can enjoy a relaxing, yet productive, night out by learning how to arrange fresh flowers in a Fall Cornucopia (horn of plenty basket) perfect for Thanksgiving or a harvest themed home or event. The cornucopia is filled with colorful mums, golden aster, natural berries, fall grasses and foliage. This fresh flower design is long-lasting and perfect for a centerpiece or gift.

Felicia Motherway, back by popular demand, will be the presenter for this program taking place on Monday, November 21, from 6-8pm right in time for Thanksgiving. Are you a bit insecure about your craft skills? Not to worry, she doesn’t let anyone leave without a satisfactory looking basket in hand. Registration is required for this popular event and space is limited to 20 people. The reasonable materials fee of $25 must be paid in advance. Please sign up at the circulation desk. Your registration is confirmed with cash or a check.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Friday, November 11th, (Veterans Day) and Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.

This exciting event is sponsored by Friends of Kimball Library, Atkinson NH and the proceeds benefit the library. Shop and support your library all in one fell swoop.

Also on November 5th, kids (ages 5-7) should come join us for a fun time on this particular Saturday morning. Do you like to experiment? See how things might work? This is your chance to learn about science around your house every day. The presenter, Craig Richard, lives in Atkinson and is a middle school science teacher in North Andover, Ma. He's going to show us some very cool things about science. Put ‘Kitchen Science’ on your calendar for 10:30-11:30am. Registration is required so don't hesitate and lose your place. We want to see YOU at the library.

Teens, do you want to cut your shirts into the coolest fashions? Sign up for ‘Crazy Cuts (Tee-shirts)’ that is happening on Tuesday, November 8th, at 6:30pm. Meet Corinne and learn how to cut and tie your shirt like a rock star. ‘Corinne’s Crazy Cuts’ is a program given by a 9th grade TRHS student who loves to cut and tie shirts. She will demonstrate her techniques so you can learn how to do this on your own. This program will really rock if you register yourself and a friend and bring a shirt(s) for cutting and a good pair of fabric scissors. Teens in grades 6-12 are eligible. Space is limited so register EARLY. Check out the teen room and see some shirts that have already been cut in multiple ways for an idea of what is to come. Parents—this is a good time to send in those tee-shirts that are lying around in drawers not being worn. Your teen can get a whole new wardrobe for free!

We give away our gently used donations as well as some brand spanky news ones.

Feeling green? Even in the autumn it is good to ‘go green’. We have environmentally friendly activities for kids to be made out of recycled materials on Monday, October 17th, from 4:00-5:00pm. A flashy fish made from CDs is perfect for hanging by a window to catch the sun! It's free and it's fun! Please register for this program.
Are you even a little bit country or a little bit Irish? Find out on Tuesday, October 25, 6:30-8pm and meet “Two Old Friends-- (Irish and American Country Music). Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins are once again delighting audiences young and old with a combination of Irish music and American country music.

With banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodran, octave mandolin and heartwarming vocal harmonies, ‘Two Old Friends’ tell a story in music of how immigrants came to this country from Ireland, Scotland and Great Britain, bringing their melodies and instruments; they show how the old time country ballads of the Appalachians are rooted in these tunes.

A ‘Two Old Friends’ performance will give you plaintive ballads and foot stomping shout tunes; soaring mandolin solos, gospel sing-a-longs, traditional Irish tunes and storytelling. There is truly something for everyone. Come Join the Lads for one of their concerts on October 25th and enjoy an evening with ‘Two Old Friends’!

Come if you dare on Friday, October 28, from 6:00-7:30pm for a little ‘Halloween Spooktacular’ for kids. If you dare you can enter Mr. Kreep’s room for the biggest surprise of all. Registration is required and will remain open until filled or October 27, 8pm (whatever happens first). We regret absolutely cannot take walk-ins for this program, so please so register in advance.

AT LAST! Those who have Kindle readers or the Kindle app on the iPod touch or iPhone now can borrow free electronic books right off our website. Just go to www.kimballlibrary.com and click on the icon that says ‘downloadable books.’ Be careful when selecting the eBook format. Users with Sony Readers, Kobos, and Nooks should be selecting the EPUB version of the title. Users with Kindles or Kindle apps on their tablets and smartphones should select the Kindle Book format. It is not possible to select both formats; whichever format you initially choose is the only format you will have access to. If a Nook user selects Kindle and does not have a Kindle account or device, a librarian will need to ask OverDrive's tech support to return the title. If you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Just a reminder—ebooks are similar to physical books and there are limited copies. If you put yourself on hold for books that you like we may purchase additional titles to keep up with demand. The same holds true for those of you who prefer a hard copy of a book. Please put yourself on reserve or ask us to. Also, in either format let us know of new titles you are seeking that are not available so we can add them to our wish list.
Tie a string on your finger to remind yourself about the Saturday Cinema coming up on October 15th at 10:30am. This is a tale (tail) of spooktacular puppies! Pack up the kids and scoot out if they are at least age 6 with a permission slip signed or stick around and enjoy the show for ages 5 and under. We appreciate your registrations in advance. Please bring movie snacks, candy, or bottled drinks along with pillows if the kids prefer to sack out on the floor. Make our Saturday shows part of your family traditions.

Are you gnarly about words? Do you like to be with other peeps your age to hang and chat with? Competitive, much? Try us one Tuesday night of each month. The teen librarian plans to play word games with teens. The game of the night will vary depending on the number of kids (grades 6-12, please) who register.

Just a few of the ideas: 'Fast Scrabble', Bananagrams, Scattergories, Balderdash, Hangman, Upwords, etc. You are welcome to bring word games from home to teach us even though there will be games here. All games must be able to be completed in roughly one hour. Register your friends. (They don’t have to be Atkinson residents.) Our next ‘Words with Teens’ night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th, at 6:30pm. Come and spell your stuff!

Please note that we will be closed on Monday, October 10th, as Columbus Day is observed. Two day loans taken on Friday the 7th will not be due until Tuesday, October 11th. We will be open on Saturday the 8th for our usual 10am-3pm.

It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes many hands to make light work. We are in the business of offering you opportunities to serve and give back to your community at the library. You could do that here at Kimball Library if you have one hour a week consistently to give away and you are a detail-oriented person who is sixteen or older. We can use those folks who are willing to shelve books once a week for one hour. Some lifting and bending is involved as well as great attention to alphabetization, order, and the decimal system. We will train you, but we need a minimum of a 6 week trial and then a 6 month commitment from you if we both feel this is the place for you. Contact Kathy Watson at (603) 362-5234 for more information and a volunteer application.

We have some news regarding our fictional DVDs that we are quite sure will please you. Traditionally our loan period has been for 2 days for all movies in this category. Now, however, you may take out any fictional DVD that we have had for 6 months or longer for a loan period of one week. Our late fees will remain the same if you return them later than the due date, but you now have five extra days to watch your films and get them back for free. This is just our way of making your life easier. 

Even more good news to enjoy is that we have another new way to save you money and add some entertainment to your life. We are now carrying a discount pass for the Merrimack Repertory Theatre. It is good for $10 off each ticket, limit 6 tickets per performance of MRT's 2011-2012 season. *This is NOT VALID FOR SPECIAL EVENTS* and may only be used once per person, per performance.

The pass must be presented at MRT's Box Office to receive tickets. Tickets may be reserved and paid for in advance with the ID Number, on the front of this pass, but the pass must be brought to the theater the day of the performance to receive the tickets.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.

Continuing on from our thankfulness theme from the last article to our gift sponsors for summer reading, we now take a moment to extend our thanks to those who ‘performed’ in our events. Please join us for a shout out to ‘Reptiles on the Move’ who shared their unique creatures with us, Deepal Vora, an amazing henna artist who professionally and tastefully tatted up the teens, and Sonny Charles from Defense with Dignity who gave teens tools to work with in situations where they might be in danger and ways to escape safely. We were very pleased with the services from these top-notch organizations that went above and beyond to connect with the children and teens. We highly recommend them all.

Do you hear Hawaiian music? Do you see professional Hula dancers? You must be at a LUAU at the library! We encourage you to wear your favorite Hawaiian outfit. Play some Hawaiian games such as coconut bowling and sand bucket toss as well as participate in the hula hoop contest. Face painting, games, and food start at 5pm. Professional Hawaiian dancers start at 6pm. Save the date ~Friday, August 19th, from 5-8pm. Get in the Hawaiian groove and ALOHA.

We are collecting books, movies, and music in good condition that are cluttering up your house. We receive book donations year round, but twice a year we urge you to especially clear out what you no longer want and bring them in to us. The Town-wide Yard Sale (September 24) is coming up and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase. These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now. Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through. We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection. If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to other worthy organizations. Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library. Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3). If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

For those patrons who plan ahead, please take note that the library will be closed Labor Day weekend from September 3-5. We’ll be open on Friday, September 2nd until 8pm and then we will re-open on September 6th at 10am. Best wishes for a restful long weekend.

Kimball Library News 8/2/11

Summer reading programs for children and teens are officially closed which is sad, but we have a lot to be thankful for as well as a lot of thanks to convey. It was a record-breaking year with over 250 combined child and teen registrations. Most of the children’s programs were maxed out for registrations hosting 30 plus for each event. The teens came out in record numbers as well. The children ‘traveled’ to France, Japan, Mexico, and Italy and ate various delicacies from each country represented. Over 80 children, teens, and adults joined us for ‘Reptiles on the Move’. The teens showed off their talents in a cooking contest, showed us their moves in self-defense, and got tatted up with henna. Children read approximately 29,000 minutes while the teens read and participated to the tune of roughly 500 tickets. (Most tickets equaled one book less than 200 pages, and if a book was 200 or above 2 tickets could be submitted.) All of these milestones make us incredibly proud of the youth of this area who chose to spend a portion of their summer reading, expanding their horizons, and with us.

We are incredibly thankful to ‘The Friends of Kimball Library’ who fundraise and provide us with prizes, performers, and programs for the reading programs. If it were not for the hard work and generosity of this group we would not be able to have summer reading program of any substance at all. Likewise, it takes donations from local businesses to whom we also grateful. We tip our hats to the following:
• Hannaford (E. Hampstead, NH)
• EGGIE’S Family Restaurant (Atkinson, NH)
• Charmingfare Farm (Candia, NH)
• StoryLand (Glen, NH)
• Cedarland (Haverhill, MA)
• Victorian Park (Salem, NH)
• Masiello Group (Atkinson, NH)
• East Coast Lumber (E. Hampstead, NH)
• McDonald’s Restaurants (Haverhill, MA)
• Fisher Cats (Manchester, NH)
• Canobie Lake Park (Salem, NH)
• Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey
• Topsfield Fair (Topsfield, MA)
• Rye Airfield (Rye, NH)
Without the support of our sponsors we would not be able to offer prizes which are a fabulous incentive for any age. Please join us in thanking them by frequenting their places of business. It is especially noteworthy for them to give generously in economic times such as these. We also had a number of individual private donations and we offer our kudos to those who thought of us as well.

Summer reading programs may be closed, but we are not. We are open Monday-Friday from 10am-8pm as well as Saturdays from 10am-3pm. Enjoy our a/c on the last lazy days of summer. Chill out with some magazines, music, computer use, fiction or non-fiction, audio books, eBooks, DVDs, television series DVDs, graphic novels, comics, manga, etc. The possibilities are mind-blowing because they are all for free! Take advantage of the goldmine at your doorstep.

Reminder: WOW, a LUAU at the library! Save the date ~Friday, August 19, from 5-8pm. Aloha.

‘You are Here’ on Tuesday, July 19th, from 6:30-8:00pm learning to defend yourself. This program is slated for incoming sixth graders through college age and you do not have to be part of the teen summer reading program to participate. Hampstead resident, Sonny Charles, will show you how to evaluate strangers and how to defend yourself against assault. Using principals of Judo, Karate, Aikido and Jujitso, he will focus on the escape process and getting to safety. There will be the opportunity for audience participation. You will leave with a sense of empowerment from learning these basic techniques to use in realistic situations. We strongly encourage college freshmen in particular to attend as you may need these skills on your college campus.

Sonny Charles has had a defense studio for fourteen years. He was also a hand-to-hand combat instructor in the military. “Mr. Charles teaches kids a program of self-defense that helps them manage conflicts with minimum physical force. Participants of this program use role playing as well as basic self-defense skills to limit their chances of resorting to unnecessary violence.” Registration for this event is strongly encouraged.

‘Kimball Library Writing Group’ is a fairly new group that meets on the second Monday of the month. In July the focus will be on military stories. This does not have to be first-hand experience with the military but should have a military theme. Each writing session will be facilitated. The writing theme will be different each month and decided on by the members of the group. All are invited to come on Monday, July 11th, from 6:30-8pm. This is a judgment free zone for writers of all levels.

Do we have any budding chefs entering grade 6 up through age 19? The ‘You are Here’ teen summer reading event on Tuesday, July 12, from 6:30-9pm is an opportunity to show off your cooking/assembling skills and see a cooking movie. The 'No-Bake, Bake-Off!' rules are simple. You can either make a drink, an appetizer or dessert. It has to be primarily made in the library and you can use the microwave to heat up your creation. If you want to do some prep at home that is acceptable. You may bring in your own blender. You have thirty minutes to create your entry. You may work alone or with a partner, and you must be sure to bring everything you need for materials. The judges will use presentation, creativity and tastiness as their criteria and rate each category on a scale of 1-5. At the end of the competition, the highest score wins a 'cheap and worthless' prize. After the contest we'll watch a cooking movie. Teens who do not want to be in the contest, but want to just watch the movie are welcome and vice-versa. The movie will start after the contest around 7:15pm, and there are rats and culinary adventures. Please register yourself and your friends.

‘KnitOwls’ is a NEW knitting group that meets on Thursday evenings starting July 14th. The two morning knitting groups are such a success that the night owls want a slot for themselves. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced knitter, come join the fun and learn together. Please bring your own supplies. This is an informal gathering to finish those unfinished projects or perhaps get some new ideas for beginning some novel ones. You’ll share some laughs, drop a stitch or two, and make some new friends. All experience levels and ages welcome.

'One World, Many Stories' on Thursday, July 14th, from 4:00-5:00pm is heading to ‘Away We Go to Mexico!’ Hola! From ancient cultures, colorful celebrations and delicious food, there's always something new and interesting to find out about Mexico! You will be able to create Mexican foil art, color with markers, and then add beads. Won’t it be fun to eat tasty Mexican foods and play a Mexican game? This is a Summer Reading Program where kids ages 5-10 are included. Registration closes Wednesday, July 13th, at 5:00pm.

'One World, Many Stories' on Monday, June 27th, from 5:30-6:30pm takes us to Bangladesh with the Summertime Brown Baggers. Kids in grades 2-4 are encouraged to read ‘Rickshaw Girl’ by Mitali Perkins. [In her village, ten-year-old Naimi excels at painting designs called alpanas, but to help her impoverished family financially she would have to be a boy - or disguise herself as one.] Books are available at the children's desk for you to pick up in plenty of time for reading. Please bring your own supper in a bag. We provide the dessert and drinks while we talk about the book. And yes, this event does require pre-registration.

‘You Are Here’ on Wednesday, June 29, from 6:30-9pm takes us to a small French village where a woman and her daughter open up a chocolate shop. 'Chocolat!' the movie will be on the large screen, and during intermission we'll have the chocolate fountain ready for dipping. Entry requirements for this program are online registration AND one dozen or more dippers for the chocolate fountain. Dipper suggestions are on the website. There is African food to taste from Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, beaded bracelets to make, a mask to design, and much more. Registration is required for this event, and this event is designed for children age 5 through grade 5. This is a Kids’ Summer Reading Program, and registration for this event closes Wednesday, June 29 at 4:00pm.

‘You are Here’ on Wednesday, July 6, from 6:30-8pm, takes us to Sudan with the combination Teen/Tween Book Discussion. Youth in grade 5 up through high school are encouraged to read ‘A Long Walk to Water’ by Linda Sue Park. [Based on the true story of Salva, one of some 3,800 Sudanese "Lost Boys" airlifted to the United States beginning in the mid 1990s. This poignant story of Salva's life is told side-by-side with the story of Nya, a young girl who lives today in one of those villages who once walked eight hours each day to fetch water. Following the discussion, we’ll play Kudoda, an African game from 7:30-8pm. Books are available at the front desk. Please register in advance, and yes, it’s true, candy is often on the table at teen book discussions.

Consider this: You can enjoy beautiful artwork right in your community. Don Whittemore will have his artwork on display in the library meeting room from May 17th through June 13th. Take time to stop by and enjoy the show.

In 1979, Don began taking art lessons from a local artist. Once through the basics, and after completing several paintings with the instructor, he went off on his own. He read a lot of art history, visited museums, art galleries and shows, while at the same time beginning to develop his own style. Don currently volunteers at the Salem, NH Senior Services Center giving free, weekly painting lessons to emerging artists. He also offers a series of five weekly semi-private acrylic workshops for experienced artists currently using acrylics or any other painting medium for a fee. These take place in his home studio in Windham, NH. For those folks new to acrylics, the workshops will provide hands-on experience on how to work with this fast drying, versatile medium. Experienced acrylic artists will learn new methods and approaches to get the most from this wonderful paint.
Consider this: What would you do with an extra $500.00 a month? Dream about how to spend or invest it after coming to ‘Couponing with Chrissy’ on Thursday, June 16, 6:30-8:00pm. Seats are limited for this workshop and registration is required. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Chrissy is an Atkinson mother of three and has been “couponing” for years now. She was constantly trying to find ways to increase her household income. Then a high school friend said, “Spend less” and that’s how it all started!

There are tricks to using coupons. It is not as simple as finding a coupon for a product and clipping it. Chrissy teaches people the strategy behind coupons. The class takes about two hours and will start with the basics of “couponing.” It is not ‘Extreme Couponing’ as seen on TV. People on TV spend hours laboring over their “deals.” Chrissy spends two hours per week doing this for her family and has saved approximately $15,000-$20,000 in two years.
