Kimball Library News 7/5/11

‘You are Here’ on Tuesday, July 19th, from 6:30-8:00pm learning to defend yourself. This program is slated for incoming sixth graders through college age and you do not have to be part of the teen summer reading program to participate. Hampstead resident, Sonny Charles, will show you how to evaluate strangers and how to defend yourself against assault. Using principals of Judo, Karate, Aikido and Jujitso, he will focus on the escape process and getting to safety. There will be the opportunity for audience participation. You will leave with a sense of empowerment from learning these basic techniques to use in realistic situations. We strongly encourage college freshmen in particular to attend as you may need these skills on your college campus.

Sonny Charles has had a defense studio for fourteen years. He was also a hand-to-hand combat instructor in the military. “Mr. Charles teaches kids a program of self-defense that helps them manage conflicts with minimum physical force. Participants of this program use role playing as well as basic self-defense skills to limit their chances of resorting to unnecessary violence.” Registration for this event is strongly encouraged.

Adult book readers have time to come get a copy of ‘Tears of the Giraffe’ by Alexander McCall Smith and discuss this novel with other folks in one of our conference rooms on Tuesday, July 19th, from 6:00-7:00pm. Summer is a great time to try out any of our book discussions. This particular group meets monthly on THIRD Tuesdays. Please drop in and pick up a copy of this book.

'One World, Many Stories' on Thursday, 21st, from 4:00-5:00pm is heading to ‘Next Stop, Italy!’ Michelangelo, well known for his statue of David and his painting of the Sistine Chapel, was a famous Italian artist. Find out what it was like for Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by creating your own painting -- but bring a pillow! He didn't have one when he did his work. Hear music and stories, eat GRRREAT Italian food! 'Mangia!' This is a Summer Reading Program for kids K-Gr. 5. Registration for this event closes Wednesday, July 20 at 5:00pm.

They’re back—and they are larger and even more spectacular! ‘The Kokopelli Flute Group is seven adults who have varying backgrounds in their professional and musical lives. They are all part of the flute section of the Timberlane Community Band (TCB), and together, they have found a wonderful outlet for their music and a very special friendship. Join us and them in the courtyard for the 2nd Annual Kokopelli Flute Concert on Tuesday, July 26th, from 6:30-8:00pm. You’ll be guaranteed a place to sit if you bring your own lawn chair or blanket. During intermission, ice cream sundaes will be served. We are hosting this rain or shine, but please, pray for shine! We’ll meet in the large meeting room if we have inclement weather. This event is paid for and sponsored by ‘The Friends of Kimball Library’.

Reminder: We take book donations year round. Cleaning out? Think of us.
