About the September book: Sixteen-year-old Mattie Gokey has big dreams but little hope of seeing them come true. Desperate for money, she takes a job at the Glenmore, where hotel guest Grace Brown entrusts her with the task of burning a secret bundle of letters. But when Grace's drowned body is fished from the lake, Mattie discovers that the letters could reveal the grim truth behind a murder.

Set in 1906 against the backdrop of the murder that inspired Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy, Jennifer Donnelly's astonishing debut novel effortlessly weaves romance, history, and a murder mystery into something moving, and real, and wholly original.

SATURDAY STEAM: Join us for an easy-going STEAM program for kids grades K-3. Please note that we are changing our meeting time going forward to 1:00 PM. In September we meet on the 9th.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month and work on a project using common items and have some fun challenges using whatever we have created for the day.

This month is: APPLE SCIENCE

Apples aren't just for eating or picking. You can learn a lot from them. Learn about oxidation by trying to preserve an apple. Then we'll see if we can guess the names of the apple based on how it tastes.

Kimball Library News 8/20/23

We have some popular afterschool classes starting back up in September. Register ASAP as these do tend to fill up to capacity. You then will be on a waiting list with priority for future sessions.

That’s right, the Children’s Room isn’t just for preschoolers! We have several programs for older kids, including some just after school. Sign up for these super fun classes now to reserve your spot.

Both Kindergarten Club and Elementary Explorers may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to come to the class. Children are eligible to take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the Library if parents make arrangements with pick-up patrol. (The Library is not taking responsibility for the transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack them a snack that they can have before 3:30. Parents MUST let the Library know of any changes to the drop off/pick up routine OR if their child is not attending the class. Safety first!

KINDERGARTEN CLUB: This fun group (Ages 5-6) is on Mondays starting September 11th at 3:30 PM.

Children ages 5-6 are invited to join us for this highly engaging program. With stories, games, crafts, and maybe and experiment or two, you’re bound to have a great time!

ELEMENTARY EXPLORERS: This STEM class (Grades 1-3) meets on Thursdays starting September 7th at 3:30 PM.

Elementary Explorers is back on a new day! If you love science, then this is the class for you. Each week, we will have a building challenge or an experiment, so get ready for some (occasionally messy) fun!

SUMMER CONCERT with the TIMBERLANE COMMUNITY JAZZ BAND: The Timberlane Community Jazz Band (TCMA Jazz Band) was formed in the mid-2000's.  Directed by John Mainella, they play a repertoire of big band tunes from yesterday and today with a modern, jazzy, swinging edge.

Don't forget to invite your friends and family to join you for a wonderful evening of music on Thursday, August 31st at 6:00 PM. We are forever grateful to the George Family Charities for their generous sponsorship and to The Friends of the Kimball Library for hosting.

*We suggest that in the event of inclement weather, you check the Kimball Library website for updates.

ARTIST OF AUGUST: For the month of August, the Library is hosting an exciting exhibit of Judy Durkin’s oil and acrylic paintings. Please stop by the meeting room to enjoy her work.

“Art is for the soul, and it is very personal. I paint what I love, and I am happiest when I see an expression of awe, joy, surprise and even sometimes sadness on the face of someone viewing my paintings. Art is not what the viewer looks at but what they see. I hope my paintings evoke an emotion in you, the viewer. May they all bring you inspiration, charm and joy.”

HOLIDAY CLOSING: The Library will be closed from September 2nd through the 4th in observation of Labor Day. Streaming services such as Libby, Hoopla and Kanopy are available 24/7 as well as news sources on our website such as the Wall St. Journal and NewsBank with a library card in good standing. Best wishes for a safe and pleasant holiday weekend!

Tick prevention education is certainly necessary, especially if you live in the state of New Hampshire. Register and join us at Kimball Library on Thursday, September 7th to start or continue your journey regarding this important topic.

We will hear from Rachel Maccini, State Field Specialist for the Pesticide Safety Education Program. She coordinates and delivers pesticide safety education to licensed and non-licensed pesticide applicators statewide.

Rachel uses her entomology skills to help identify insects and arthropods as a crucial first step towards solving a problem and providing safe controls and/or treatment. She also assists with the Master Gardener training through her teaching of Entomology, IPM and other related topics.

Prior to joining UNH Cooperative Extension, Rachel worked as entomologist I for the NH Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food. Her responsibilities included providing support, education and annual plant inspections to growers throughout the state.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS for the FALL: The Youth Services department is offering preschool registrations for the September through December recurring weekly classes listed below. Register once, and attend the entire series.

MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE (Mondays at 10:15 AM): Infants through age 3 with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs modeled after the Mother Goose curriculum.  Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing.

If you sign up, we consider you registered for the length of the session which ends in late December. Registration is rolling. If the class is full, please go ahead and register ONE time and you will be placed on the wait list. We will be in touch.

BITTY BOOKS (Tuesdays at 10:15 AM): Children ages 3-6 with their caregivers are invited to join us for itty bitty stories, rhymes, finger plays or songs and simple crafts. This is a traditional teacher-led class that has been a popular favorite for many years.

DISCOVERY STORYTIME (Wednesdays at 1:00 PM): PreK friends ages 3-6 (and their caregivers) are encouraged to join us for some tactile fun, stories, finger plays or actions songs, and crafts. We'll have several stations set up with fun activities that will build on our fine motor and other skills. We might get a little messy in this class, but that's part of the fun!

SENSORY STORYTIME: (Thursdays at 10:15 AM): Join us for an exceptional exploratory class! Some story times are too long while some classes are too organized for young children. Sensory Story Time is just right for your little ones ages 3-6 who are almost ready for a traditional story time but may still be challenged by so much structure.

Join us for one story, followed by an opportunity to play with sensory and art activities that reinforce what was heard in the story.

*We will accept younger siblings as long as parents and caregivers are aware we may use small parts at our stations.

MORNING BOOK CLUB: We meet monthly to discuss a title chosen by the group. Why not join in, take an hour and talk about the book? Hear what others have to say and enjoy the conversations. Books to be discussed are available for loan at the main circulation desk.

On August 23rd at 10:15 we will discuss “Clara and Mr. Tiffany” by Susan Vreeland.

It’s 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows, which he hopes will honor his family business and earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll, head of his women’s division. Publicly unrecognized by Tiffany, Clara conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which he is long remembered. Clara struggles with her desire for artistic recognition and the seemingly insurmountable challenges that she faces as a professional woman which ultimately force her to protest against the company she worked so hard to cultivate.

Kimball Library News 7/30/23

Are you aware that we have a plethora of weekly programs for adults that are open to new participants? This might be the time to for you to make a new set of friends at one of the following activities.

CRAFT, PAINT & COLOR (Monday): Come unwind, de-stress and create every Monday from 12:30-2:30 PM as we gather to dabble in painting, coloring or creative crafts using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil. Individuals work on canvas, wood, sketchpads and coloring books. This nicely sized group is comprised of folks that are both friendly and creative.  Please register to attend and bring your own materials.

Research shows that creative activities help you relax. This is an open time so feel free to stay the entire time, leave early or come late. Remember this is a no stress event so if you only have 30 minutes to spare than spend it relaxing with fellow creative art enthusiasts.

ITALIAN CONVERSATIONS (Tuesday): This adult study group focuses on practicing speaking Italian by helping each other through shared resources, various activities and games. If you are fluent or are learning the language with a basic understanding of Italian vocab, grammar and verb conjugations (present tense), please come join us to exercise your Italian the fun way from 6-7:45 PM.

NEEDLE CRAFTERS (Wednesday): Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday between 10:00 AM and noon, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great way to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This weekly meet and greet group enjoys conversation and laughs while stitching away. Please bring your own materials.

Room size capacity is limited so registration is required. We may be unable to accommodate walk-in participants. Please use the online calendar or call to get on the list.

COMMUNITY KNITTERS (Thursday): Join this caring group who knits and donates all their items to charity. They are always welcoming new folks who are like-minded. They gather and knit from 10:00-noon.

LET’S PLAY MAH JONGG (Friday): If you already know how to play Mah Jongg, come join the fun and join us in this strategy-based (plus a bit of luck) game.  Registration is required so please use the online calendar or give us a call. This group plays from 1:00-4:30 PM.

Mah Jongg, a fun rummy-like game, is played with tiles rather than cards. There are many different versions of game all around the world. We play American Mah Jongg and follow the rules as defined by the National Mah Jongg League. One of the main differences is that American Mah Jongg uses an annual card of Official Standard Hands and Rules, against which all games are played. These cards are available from the National Mah Jongg League and you will need to bring yours along to use while playing.

Cozy up in the meeting room of the Library, share some laughs, and make some new friends. Studies have shown that Mah Jongg is a great game for keeping the mind sharp – we can all benefit from that!

THE HEALTH OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER (Zoom): The Merrimack River has been transformed from one of the most polluted in the nation to one of the region’s most popular recreational rivers and vibrant wildlife habitats.  Yet every time a moderate rainstorm passes through the Merrimack Valley, you can be sure that raw sewage is being discharged into the Merrimack, sometimes so much that it’s unsafe to swim in the river for days. The summer of 2023 has been a particularly active period for sewage discharges. Why is this happening, and what is being done to stop it?

Join John Macone, education and policy specialist at the Merrimack River Watershed Council, for an in-depth slideshow talk on the Merrimack’s two-century-long problem of pollution. John will discuss how the problem began, what’s been done to fix it, what needs to be done in the future and how you can get involved in helping the Merrimack.  John has served as MRWC’s outreach and education manager since 2017. Prior to that, he served as editor of the Newburyport Daily News for 14 years, and has hosted numerous presentations, boat tours and walking tours throughout the Merrimack River region.

This Zoom program takes place on August 15th at 7:00 PM and is hosted by the G.A.R. Memorial Library in cooperation with the Kimball Library. Register to receive the link.

WRITE IT OUT: Join us on Wednesday, August 16th at 6 PM. Kids in grades 2-8 are invited to join us to write it out! We'll start off with a prompt or two to read to the class and then free write. All abilities are welcome.

6:00 PM: The music begins! TCMA (formerly the Timberlane Community Band), now in its 23th season, is a free, volunteer band, founded and conducted by Anthony DiBartolomeo, retired Director of Music for the Timberlane Regional School District.  The band performs at various indoor and outdoor venues in the greater Southern New Hampshire area.  Please bring your lawn chairs and/or blanket to sit on.  There is some limited seating in the Library Courtyard as well.  This will be a fun summer night to enjoy with friends and family.  We do suggest carpooling due to limited parking.  The concert is free and open to all regardless if you have tickets for the cookout.
