Kimball Library News 7/12/21

Here’s just a friendly reminder that the summer concert series is still going strong. Check our calendar on Thursdays to see when the next available one is coming up. The acoustics in our Library Courtyard are very sweet. Is it really summer if you don’t attend at least one?

ANIME MOVIE NIGHT: We’re hosting the best kind of t/ween movie night: ANIME MOVIE NIGHT! Come watch this classic anime movie about a girl who saves the life of a cat and faces unexpected consequences. (Can you guess the movie?)

We’ll have arts and craft supplies out so we can make cute cat-themed crafts and practice our manga artwork while we watch.  Register grades 5 and up for this exclusive t/ween event taking place on Wednesday, July 28th, at 6:00 PM.

MAKE AN ANIMAL PUPPET: It’s time to make a one-of-a-kind puppet kids will love and with a cute little tail, too!  What could it be? Find out when you register your children for our craft night. They’ll love it when it’s done!

We are limited to the number of people in the room so please try and register early so your children will not be disappointed. This crafty event is on Thursday, July 29th, at 6:00 PM.

3-D PRINTING WITH JOE: We’ve had a schedule change with Joe, so please take note. Class is for grades 3-8 on August 3rd at 4:30 PM.

Learn how 3-D Printing works and then design your very own creation to bring to life on a 3-D printer. Atkinson's very own Joseph Quaratiello will teach a short introduction to Tinkercad, a 3-D sculpting software. Everyone will get the chance to test out the software as they add their own unique touch to a basic design. Each design will be printed so everyone can take home their own 3-D print.

3-D printed items require 48-72 hours to be ready for pickup. Please plan to stop by on Thursday to pick up your item.

MORNING BOOK GROUP: The morning book discussion group has been going strong for years. Try them out on July 28th at 10:15 AM. This month’s selection is ‘The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan.

Bone china cup and saucer—Found, on a bench in Riveria Public Gardens, 31st October.

Anthony Peardew is the keeper of lost things. Forty years ago, he carelessly lost a keepsake from his beloved fiancĂ©e, Therese. That very same day, she died unexpectedly. Brokenhearted, Anthony sought consolation in rescuing lost objects—the things others have dropped, misplaced, or accidently left behind—and writing stories about them. Now, in the twilight of his life, Anthony worries that he has not fully discharged his duty to reconcile all the lost things with their owners.

Please register to let us know your intent. Books are available at the main circulation desk. Lifelong friends and interesting conversations may be found with this lively group.

Kimball Library News 7/4/21

It’s chow time! Tails and Tales has inspired us to make Puppy Chow (for kids). We will be ready to eat it when it's done. You might know it as ‘Muddy Buddies’.

There's time to have doggy fun games after we're done so be prepared for a good time. This will be dog-gone fun!

This kid-friendly foodie event is taking place on Thursday, July 22nd at 1 PM. Please register grades K-5 in advance as space is limited.

LAURA KLAIN: Come learn about some of the many practices you can incorporate in your life that can leave you energized and focused.  In this program you will be introduced to topics and tools such as: Creative Journaling, Guided Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement Practices to Reduce Stress, and Vision Boards.

We welcome back Laura Klain of Bud to Blossom Life Design who will be offering this program in person at the Library on July 22nd at 6 PM.

Laura is a Martha Beck Certified Life Coach, an experienced meditation instructor and workshop facilitator.  When not coaching, leading a workshop, or working as a library director you can find her performing with her husband in their rock band “The Daylilies”.

WILD TIE DYE: Animals wear all kinds of patterns to blend into their surroundings - or to stand out! We'll learn about animal camouflage and patterns before heading outside to make our own incredible animal tie-dyed shirts at this wild event on July 26th at 6 PM.

Please bring your own t-shirt or clothing to tie-dye. Any pale or light colored item will work. (Get creative. Socks, bandanas, canvas tote bags and almost anything else you can think of would work just fine.)

Messes are bound to happen when tie-dying so please be sure to wear clothes that are okay to get a little stained.

BALLET BOOT CAMP: Come to hear the story of Swan Lake, and then dance it out on July 27th at 4 PM!

We'll read an interactive story of the cursed princess, the prince who helps her break the spell, and all their friends who overthrow an evil wizard and his dastardly sidekick.

Everyone will have the chance to dance whatever role they'd like. We'll all master the classic 'swan arms' together, and a few extra fun ballet moves that anyone at any skill level can learn. We'll perform a modified (10 min) version of the Swan Lake performance for families at the end of the program with minor costumes and music in the Library Courtyard.

You’re invited to our garden party where we’re celebrating all things BUGGY!

We’ll all plant wildflower seeds that butterflies and bees love to visit. We’ll create crafts that may just turn you into a bug, build our very own butterfly hotels, and try some buggy games.  Don’t you wish you were a kid again?

This bug fun event is taking place on Monday, July 19th, at 1 PM. Please register grades K-5 in advance.

I ROBOT ROOT CODING: Root is a robot that does incredible things.

Children and teens can code their Root® robot to draw artwork, play music, respond to touch, light, and sound, and more, all while exploring the fundamentals of robotics.

No matter your family’s experience with coding or robotics, the innovative, free iRobot® Coding platform makes coding easy with 3 Learning Levels. Begin with graphical, drag-and-drop code before advancing to hybrid code and finally, full-text code.

This class is hosted by Gail Ramsay (Code & Circuit) and Kathy Watson (Kimball Library) who have brought other coding experiences to the Library including BlueBots and Coding Jam with Osmo. Each class is developmentally designed with the age groupings in mind.

Class size is limited to 8. Please do not register for a class unless your child or teen is 100% committed as to not take a spot away from someone else. Kimball Library card holders have preference. Non-residents will be considered if the classes are not full by July 13th. Classes are on July 20th and are at different times for different age groups.

Register grades K-2 for 3 PM. Register grades 3-5 for 4:30 PM. Register grades 6-12 for 6 PM.

This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

DOGMAN PARTY: Celebrate the greatest half-man-half-dog detective that ever lived. We’ll learn how to draw the characters from Dav Pilkey’s hit series to make our own comic book stories. (Will your story star DogMan or someone totally new? It’s up to you!) We’ll try to build our very own robot side kicks just like CatKid from materials at the Library. They may not work as well as HD-80 but they will look even cooler. When we have our robots, and our comic books, we’ll meet the star of the show: a real live police dog!

Can you have this much fun at the Library? Register children entering grades K-5  for this pawsome event on July 21st at 6 PM now!

CRAFT, PAINT, AND COLOR MEETUP: Come unwind, de-stress and create every Friday at 10:30.  The group will use the large meeting room so individuals will be able to spread out as they dabble in painting, coloring or creative crafts using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil. Individuals bring their own supplies and work on canvas, wood, sketchpads and coloring books.  Group size will be limited and registration is required.  Sorry, we can not accommodate walk-in participants.

Research shows that creative activities help you relax. This is an open time so feel free to stay the entire time, leave early or come late. Remember, this is a no stress event so even if you only have 30 minutes to spare than spend it relaxing with fellow creative art enthusiasts.

*Please bring your own materials.

It’s always good to be in the know!  Holiday hours and our regular hours are located on the website. We are giving you notice so you can plan to stock up, so please note that we are closed on Monday, July 5th, observing Independence Day. As always, streaming and downloadable books are open 24/7 with a Wi-Fi connection and a library card in good standing.

ZOO CREATURES: Come meet some incredible amphibians and reptiles from Zoo Creatures. We’ll get up close and personal with frogs, snakes, lizards, and maybe even some giant bugs. It’s either WOW or EEK depending on your personality.

This event will be held in the Library Courtyard. Please maintain 3 feet of social distancing when possible. (Consider bringing a blanket to help establish your own family space.) As with all our outdoor events, this will be weather dependent. Please register for this event happening on July 14th at 6 PM so library staff can easily contact you in the event of cancellation/rescheduling.

Thank you to the Friends of Kimball Library for sponsoring this fun, educational event!

SUMMER CONCERT HAZEL PROJECT: The Hazel Project is comprised of five New England area/seacoast musicians who pay tribute to the music recorded and written by bluegrass pioneers and legendary musicians, Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. The Hazel project performs traditional grass-roots music with harmony and heart. The performance includes guest Gretchen Bowder, from Boston based band the Bag Boys, on banjo.

Summer concerts in the Library Courtyard are sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. By registering for this event occurring on July 15th at 6 PM, you will receive concert updates related to inclement weather event changes.

WRITERS GROUP (Grades 2-5): Practice writing skills here at the Kimball Library Youth Writer's Group. All our writing practice will center on having fun, telling good stories, and using our imaginations. We'll take on small challenges (like writing for 1 minute without stopping) and big challenges (like writing letters to people both real or imaginary). We'll share our favorite stories (from books, movies, or tv) and talk about what makes a story great. We'll play games and find inspiration in the most unlikely places.

This group will meet in person starting on July 16th and will meet Fridays at 5 PM. It will be held in the Courtyard as often as the weather will allow. Registration is required.

THANK YOU: Please know that the Friends of Kimball Library are overwhelmed with gratitude regarding your generous donations in their most recent fundraising campaign. It takes a village to keep an amazing library surging ahead! All donations given from the heart are truly appreciated.

We have fully open hours, yet folks often inquire so we will remind you that we are open M-F from 10-8, and Saturdays from 10-3. At the time of this release, we are currently the only library in the cooperative that is open in the evenings.

This is also the best time to inform you that holiday hours are on the website. Giving you notice so you can plan to stock up, please note that we are closed on Monday, July 5th, observing Independence Day. As always, streaming and downloadable books are open 24/7 with a Wi-Fi connection and a library card in good standing.

RACING IN THE RAIN: Join us at 6 PM with a sack supper and/or snacks on Wednesday, July 7th, as we meet in the Library Courtyard to eat and then discuss ‘Racing in the Rain’ which is the youth version of ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ by Garth Stein. Older teens may prefer to read the adult book. Both copies will be available for check-out a month before the event. Please register youth entering middle and high school.

Eating and discussion will happen outside (weather permitting), and then we’ll watch the movie starting at 6:20 PM. Please register as seating is limited in the ‘theater’.

The movie is 2 hours long and rated PG. We expect pick-up of t/weens to be at 8:30 PM.

ANIMAL SHELTER CRAFTS: Earn service hours while having fun crafting with friends at the Library AND make some furry friends very happy. We’re celebrating our summer theme Tails & Tales by working with Salem Animal Rescue League on Monday, July 12th at 6 PM. We’ll be crafting toys for their dogs, cats, and other furry friends to play with while they wait for their forever homes. You can also choose to make some bandanas and bow ties to help dogs and cats up for adoption look extra dapper. The extra touch could help an animal up for adoption catch someone’s eye. Volunteers who come to craft with us will earn service hours!

Supplies will be provided, but donations of old t-shirts and tennis balls would be a huge help. Please check your closets and bring what you can. This event is slated for t/weens in grades 5 and up.

3-D PRINTING WITH JOE: Learn how 3-D printing works and design your very own creation to bring to life on a 3-D printer. Atkinson's very own Joseph Quaratiello will teach a short introduction to Tinkercad, a 3-D sculpting software. Everyone will get the chance to test out the software as they add their own unique touch to a basic design. Each design will be printed so everyone can take home their own 3-D print.

This exciting opportunity will first be happening on Tuesday, July 13th, from 4:30-6 PM offered for grades 6 and up. There will be another opportunity for grades K-5 later in the summer.

3-D printed items require 48-72 hours to be ready for pickup. Please plan to stop by on Thursday (July 15th) to pick up your uniquely designed item.
