Kimball Library News 9/28/2020

Fall in love with your library (again). Even though most events are virtual and masks are required, much of the library jazz that you love the most still exists. You may stop by to browse, use the computers, or see a friendly face. We have a myriad of virtual programming for the fall as well as a few small in-person gatherings planned. Check out the website for all the details or drop by and get your information mask to mask!

BANNED BOOK RAFFLE FOR KIDS AND TEENS: Celebrate Banned Book Week by stopping by the Library and picking up one of the titles that they don’t want you to have. From Sept 28 – Oct 2nd, libraries are celebrating books that have been shredded, burned, and removed from their shelves for various reasons over the years, and making them available (as always) for you to check out. While defeating censorship is its own reward, we’re making Banned Books Week even sweeter this year. Check out any of these banned books and you’ll be entered into our raffle drawing for gift cards to Thrive, Beantowne, Cherry Village Pizza and Dunkins. You can enter up to 2 tickets per day, but there’s no limit on how many total raffle tickets you can get for the week… just like there’s no limit on what you can read. Take THAT, censorship!

Adults stop by and check out the Banned Book Display located behind the main circulation desk.  Although there is no raffle drawing, if you choose to check some of the books out there is some fun activities to do surrounding banned and challenged books.

1000 BOOKS READING LOG: There are two options to log your reading for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten that allow participants to join in the program whether you’re staying at home or visiting the library in person.

To log your reading digitally, log onto our ReadSquared account and log your books as you go.

Email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com or dguest@kimballlibrary.com to share when you hit the 500 book mark so that we can set up your halfway-mark prize for pick up.

To log reading in person, print out as many of the attached coloring sheets from our website post as you need or come in and collect sheets at the Children’s Desk.

Not sure about 1000 Books Before Kindergarten? NH 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy initiative that encourages families to read to their young children and to use the resources of their public libraries. The project is based on the national 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative. NH 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is sponsored by CHILIS and the NH State Library, and supported by the Center for the Book at the NH State Library, the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, the NH Academy of Family Physicians, and NH Family Voices.

NO BOOK DONATIONS:  Please, we know you want to recycle your books by giving them to us, but due to the pandemic and storage we are not receiving donations. We especially don’t want them left outside our doors or inside our book drop. Thank you for understanding.

We are, however, receiving books that you borrowed from us per usual in our book drop, and we prefer you deposit them there so we can safely quarantine them for at least 72 hours before they go back into circulation. Please and thank you.

Kimball Library News 9/7/2020

Practice makes perfect! If your kids are heading back to school and haven’t had a lot of practice wearing face coverings, then consider a stop at the library a good place to start. We are proud to say that we’ve had visits from youth ages 3 and up all wearing masks, and the more often they visit the better they get at not even touching their masks. We are here to provide support and cheer your children on in any way we can. (Please note that all persons entering the library ages 3 and up are expected to wear a face covering over their noses.) Children under age 3 are exempt.

HERDING HOMEWORK: Do you or do your children need a little 'herding' to get homework completed? A librarian is available to guide you or them. We make no promises as far as tutoring skills, but we will assist in keeping youth on task and answering any questions we can. Sign up for a 30-minute Zoom slot. We are here to herd your homework!

Reserve this time slot to come into the library with your homework. A librarian will be available to help you with your assignment if you need guidance, but you are welcome to reserve the space as a quiet spot to work, too. Space is limited.

Both of the above options are available on Tuesday afternoons between 2:30 and 4:30. Visit the online calendar for registration options for either Zoom herding help or in-person.

SEARCHING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY:  Looking for a Fall hobby? What about researching your family history? Kimball Library patrons have access 24/7 to Ancestry and HeritageQuest.  These free databases include biographical sources, newspapers, immigration/passenger manifests and more.  Normally research must be done inside the library however access to Ancestry Library Edition has been temporarily expanded to library cardholders working remotely.  This courtesy from ProQuest and its partner Ancestry will be available until December 31, 2020.

Access is easy with your library card in hand.  During this temporarily access time, go to the Kimball Library website, click on the logo that says Library Catalog (icon is a black book), log into your account with your library card number and password. Once logged in Ancestry and HeritageQuest will be on the sidebar.  Click one of the logos and then let the searching begin.  Need help accessing Ancestry or HeritageQuest just give us a call and we will help you out.

READ TO THE LISTENING FAIRY: The Listening Fairy was open all summer and was so delighted to hear kids read that she is extending her visit throughout the entire fall season. You may ‘Zoom’ in and read to her on Wednesdays starting at 10:30 AM. Registration is required.

This is the perfect opportunity for reluctant readers, emergent readers, or readers who just like someone NEW to listen to them! Choose what your children will feel successful with. They will receive lots of encouragement.

Once you register with the Listening Fairy, you'll be sent a ZOOM link, so the fairy can listen to you read. Please choose a maximum of 5-10 minutes worth of reading. If the fairy has a light schedule, you may even get to read a second selection.

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN: We are excited to continue to offer 1000 Books Before Kindergarten open enrollment.

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).

Register for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and log your reading through our new ReadSquared subscription. http://kimballlibrary.readsquared.com/

If you’ve used ReadSquared to log any reading during the Summer Reading Program, you can log into the same account and start a program under “1000 Books”.

If you prefer the old school way of doing things, you can print out coloring sheets to log your reading and bring them into the library anytime.  We are happy to offer in person registration as well.

MUSEUM PASS PROGRAM: Looking for a family fun field trip?  Many museums are re-opening with Covid-19 restrictions in place and time ticket reservations.  Come check out a museum pass at the library and get a discount and in some cases a free pass to visit Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, New England Aquarium, Peabody Essex Museum, Seacoast Science Center, Strawbery Banke, USS Constitution Museum and Zoo New England. Enjoy visiting the outdoors with a NH State Park Pass or a visit to the Bedrock Gardens.  Plus stay tuned as more venues open, by checking the Kimball Library website and clicking on the Museum Passes logo.

KID NEWS (Call for entries): Calling all kids, teens, parents, and families – we need your news!
It’s getting tough to catch up with one another these days, and we thought it might be fun to check in and see what everyone’s up to these days. Kimball Library will host weekly episodes of Kid News starting September 14th and we need YOU!

Create a short video of anything you want to share. Choose from one of our “News Segments” or invent your own. Videos should be between 2 seconds and 4 minutes long. Email videos to dguest@kimballlibrary.com by Wednesday to be featured in Monday’s episode of Kid News.

FAIRY JOURNALS: This event is run as a modified pen pal program between younger kids and older kids ('fairies').

Younger kids who register will receive a special notebook that stays at the library. They will write a note or letter to a fairy each time they visit the library.

Older children and teens can register to be 'fairies'. Their real identities will be a secret to the child they are writing to - all their journal entries will be written as their fairy persona. Older kids will be paired up with a child to write to once they register (but remember - it's a secret!).

Mondays will be the target day for younger kids to stop by and write in their journals. There is not a set time for this - it can be at any point in the day. Older kids ('fairies') will be expected to stop by anytime by close on Friday to write back in their friend's journal.

Register here and our librarian will pair you up with a 'fairy' to write to. Older kids can expect an email pairing them up with a kiddo and alerting them once their little kid's journal is set up and ready. The library will provide the journals.
