Kimball Library News 8/31/2020

Practice makes perfect! If your kids are heading back to school and haven’t had a lot of practice wearing face coverings then consider a stop at the library a good place to start. We are proud to say that we’ve had visits from youth ages 3 and up all wearing masks, and the more often they visit the better they get at not even touching their masks. We are here to provide support and cheer your children on in any way we can. (Please note that all persons entering the library ages 3 and up are expected to wear a face covering over their noses.) Children under age 3 are exempt.

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN: We are excited to continue to offer 1000 Books Before Kindergarten open enrollment.

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).

Register for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and log your reading through our new ReadSquared subscription. http://kimballlibrary.readsquared.com/

If you’ve used ReadSquared to log any reading during the Summer Reading Program, you can log into the same account and start a program under “1000 Books”.

If you prefer the old school way of doing things, you can print out coloring sheets to log your reading and bring them into the library anytime.  We are happy to offer in person registration as well.

MUSEUM PASS PROGRAM: Looking for a family fun field trip?  Many museums are re-opening with Covid-19 restrictions in place and time ticket reservations.  Come check out a museum pass at the library and get a discount and in some cases a free pass to visit Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, New England Aquarium, Peabody Essex Museum, Seacoast Science Center, Strawbery Banke, USS Constitution Museum and Zoo New England. Enjoy visiting the outdoors with a NH State Park Pass or a visit to the Bedrock Gardens.  Plus stay tuned as more venues open, by checking the Kimball Library website and clicking on the Museum Passes logo.

KID NEWS (Call for entries): Calling all kids, teens, parents, and families – we need your news!
It’s getting tough to catch up with one another these days, and we thought it might be fun to check in and see what everyone’s up to these days. Kimball Library will host weekly episodes of Kid News starting September 14th and we need YOU!

Create a short video of anything you want to share. Choose from one of our “News Segments” or invent your own. Videos should be between 2 seconds and 4 minutes long. Email videos to dguest@kimballlibrary.com by Wednesday to be featured in Monday’s episode of Kid News.

FAIRY JOURNALS: This event is run as a modified pen pal program between younger kids and older kids ('fairies').

Younger kids who register will receive a special notebook that stays at the library. They will write a note or letter to a fairy each time they visit the library.

Older children and teens can register to be 'fairies'. Their real identities will be a secret to the child they are writing to - all their journal entries will be written as their fairy persona. Older kids will be paired up with a child to write to once they register (but remember - it's a secret!).

Mondays will be the target day for younger kids to stop by and write in their journals. There is not a set time for this - it can be at any point in the day. Older kids ('fairies') will be expected to stop by anytime by close on Friday to write back in their friend's journal.

Register here and our librarian will pair you up with a 'fairy' to write to. Older kids can expect an email pairing them up with a kiddo and alerting them once their little kid's journal is set up and ready. The library will provide the journals.

STAY TUNED: Visit our website, FaceBook page, Twitter account, YouTube or Instagram to learn about more program updates and resources.
