Kimball Library News 5/27/13

It's officially that special time of year to announce that summer really is coming because summer reading registration is just around the corner!  Starting on June 17th both the youth program (children entering grades K-5) can register as well as the t/ween program (youth entering grades 6-college).  We also have a little literacy program for kids in the toddler to preschool age as well.  Come by and see us starting June 17th and we'll get you set up.  It will take you less than 5 minutes to register any age.  We've got activities and events for all ages.

Specifically for t/weens this year's theme is entitled 'Beneath the Surface' (BTS).  BTS is open to ATK youth entering grade 6 to age 19 (as of Fall 2013). Register by coming into the Kimball Library to receive your reading raffle tickets and get your $5 reading bucks coupon. Use it to pay down your library fines or receive future fine credit.

For each age-appropriate item you read, turn in your ticket to a staff member with your name, phone number, and title of the item you read. There is no required amount of reading and you can include graphic novels, magazines, novels, audio books, ebooks – any literature counts. You may ask for extra tickets if you run out. The last day to enter tickets for the raffle is August 2nd.

If you read an item that is MORE than 200 pages, you may enter 2 coupons for that same book.
Remember~ over 200 pages = DOUBLE COUPONS.  Participation raffle tickets are for teens that have registered for and attend teen programs. NEW—any Isinglass or Flume title is worth 3 tickets, and participation tickets are worth double this year.  All ‘T/ween’ events on the calendar are eligible for earning tickets.  The more you read and participate, the better your odds of winning prizes.

When each ticket is completed, drop it off at the main desk to be eligible for random prize drawings held weekly. Prizes may include snacks, books, gift cards, Water Country & Canobie passes  and more! You need not be present to win. This year’s challenge is if at least 100 teens register and submit 1000 tickets as a whole, the Youth Services Director (Kathy Watson) will get owned by teens at the
August 8 ‘Finale’ program.  Her entire head will be CRAZY colored hair for the rest of the month of August starting on August 8!  Get motivated and encourage all your friends to register and read for Beneath the Surface.

***Most summer reading events have a required registration, and registration closes 24 –48 hours in advance of the event start.  Register early to avoid disappointment.

Stay tuned next week for the children's theme.  We think you'll 'Dig It'!

Our preschool and baby spring session classes are winding down while summer reading is winding up.  Please note that the following spring sessions will end the second week of June—Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, and the Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday Kiddie Lit classes as well.  So we won’t lose our touch with our preschool gang and babies over the summer, we’ll be offering one section of each class, and even if you are in the spring session you need to re-enroll for summer if you’d like to participate.  Please send us an email or call if you cannot attend.  You may be taking a space away from someone else.

Summer Mother Goose on the Loose is for infants through age 2 and will meet on Mondays for thirty minutes starting at 10:30am on June 17th.  The children with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs.  Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages.  If you sign up, we consider you registered for the entire session.  Registration is open now.

Summer Kiddie Lit will be held on Fridays from 10:15-11:00am The first class will be on July 5th.  Children ages 3-6 with their caregivers are invited to join us.  Crafts, music, new friends and adventures into literacy are found during these classes.   Try this class time with Miss Celeste!  If you sign up, we consider you registered for the entire session.  Registration is open now.

Registration for all summer reading programs (preschool), (elementary), and (t/weens—middle/high school) begins on Monday, June 17th.  Each year there is a bit of confusion regarding this process so we proactively start to explain the semantics now.  To be included in the summer reading program, registration is required for all age groups. Individual events for various age groups will also require registration as the events have a maximum capacity, and food or craft supplies need to be purchased in advance.  We take care not to over-purchase for our events. Please take note to register for the program as a whole, but also to register for each individual event that your child plans to attend.

We truly appreciate cancellations being called in because some other child may be on a waiting list for an event and that spot in reality is being taken by someone not actually attending.  More information regarding all the programs will be forthcoming, but definitely note that you may begin general registration on June 17th.  Registration for the program as a whole is ongoing until July 26th, however, the sooner you begin the sooner you child can begin to win prizes.

Stay tuned……. Toe Jam Puppet Band is coming to town!  Toe Jam Puppet Band performs all year round in venues all over New England. Their zany brand of original music gets all who come up dancing and smiling!  This variety show will please any age who has a sense of fun and humor in their bones.  Bring a smile and be prepared to tap your toes!  Registration is not required.  Bring Grandma, bring your friends, and bring your brother.  We've got something for everyone.  This is the official 2013 kick-off into summer reading!

We'll be meeting with ‘Toe Jam’ on the patio lawn and hill at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 27th, at 6:30pm.  In case of inclement weather this event will be held at Atkinson Academy.  This event is sponsored by the Elizabeth Smith Estate.

We will be closed Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27.)  Two day loan items checked out on Thursday the 23rd will not be due back until May 28th.  Take advantage of the extension and have a safe and happy holiday weekend. Top of Form

“We’re goin’ to the zoo, zoo, zoo. How about you, you, you? You can come too, too, too. We’re goin’ to the zoo, zoo, zoo.” are lyrics by Raffi that you can jam to when you are on your way to the Franklin or Stone Zoo.  We have plenty of passes available and this is a great time of year to have a visit.  This library pass admits 6 people @ $6.00 per adult and $4.00 per child.  Reservations can be made online on our webpage or over the phone.  If you note that the pass is not available for a particular date, do not despair.  Call us and we’ll give you a pass that does not expire until June 30 and that you can use on any day before July 1.

A dozen t/weens gathered on May 1 to discuss a book, 'The Sacrifice', and ending up debating over whether or not the death penalty should exist.  Much candy was consumed and there was a lot of thoughtful discussion.  Your child in grade 5-8 is welcome to join us on June 5 at 6:30pm as we review Jordan Sonnenblick’s ‘Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie’. This is a brave and beautiful story that will make readers laugh and break their hearts at the same time.  Salted with humor and peppered with devastating realities, 'Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie' is a heartwarming journey through a year in the life of a family in crisis.  We have copies of this novel at the front desk.  Stop by and grab a copy for your t/ween, and we won’t be surprised if you read it and enjoy it, too.

Got books?  WE DO!  Stop by on Saturday, May 18th, from 8am-3pm.  We'll have more than books--baked goods, flea items, movies, music and more.  The early bird gets the best picks!  See you there.

We will be closed Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27.)  Two day loan items checked out on Thursday the 23rd will not be due back until May 28th.  Take advantage of the extension and have a safe and happy holiday weekend. Top of Form

Vacation getaways or business trips are the perfect time to take out one of our 3 regular Kindles, large screen Kindle, Kindle touch, or our Nook.  Each kindle has over 50 bestselling titles/authors on it, and our Nook has teen-friendly titles that have been nominated for either the Flume or Isinglass award (books nominated by tweens and teens).  Get your name on the waiting list if all our gadgets are checked out.  You’ll love having an easily portable library with you.

We also have a fun device for in-house check-out in the children’s room.  We have loaded up two iPads with 40 book and early literacy apps, and you will be able to check them out to a designated area by the Children’s Information Desk and use them for one hour.  Most of the apps are appropriate for preschool age children as well as there are some that you can use with toddlers.  There are some apps that are geared for elementary age as well.  This is a tool for you to use with your child, and we have an agreement for you to sign before doing so. Come in and have a look.

Just a reminder that folklorist Jo Radner will be presenting ‘Braving the Middle Ground: Stories of Pre-Revolutionary Northern New England’  at the library on Saturday, May 11th, at 11:30am.  In this performance storyteller/historian ,Jo Radner, juxtaposes Native American oral traditions and stories told by her own New England ancestors to reveal a complex colonial ‘middle ground’ in which English settlers and Native peoples saw one another as defenders and trespassers, pursuers and refugees, relatives and aliens, kind neighbors and ruthless destroyers.  Mark the date!

Please keep weeding those unwanted books, DVDs, and music CDs.  We can put them into our collection, the upcoming sale on May 18th, or donate them to another organization for you.  Call us anytime we’re open and we’ll meet you in the back for large deliveries.
