Kimball Library News 5/25/15

SUMMER READING REGISTRATION: Rolling registration for both age groups (grades K-5) and (grades 6 and up) starts June 8th and you may register in person up until the end of July.  Last week we highlighted the elementary age group, this week we’ll tackle the t/weens ‘UNMASK’.

UNMASK: ‘UNMASK registration is open to ATK youth entering grade 6 and up (as of Fall 2015).

Register as early as Monday, June 8th, by coming into the Kimball Library to receive your $5 reading bucks credit. Use it to pay down your library fines or receive future fine credit.  Registration is open until the end of July.

Each time you visit the library after you have registered and check something out, you may put your checkout receipt in a raffle jar.  Be sure that your name is on your slip and your phone number is on the back.  You can scan your library card into your phone or iPod in the RedLaser or Keychain app so you always have it available to check items out and receive a receipt. If you use another family member’s card then please put your name as on the back as well.

Drop your receipt in a raffle jar near the main desk to be eligible for random prize drawings held weekly.  Additional receipts (which means more chances to win) will be given to any UNMASK tweens or teens that register and participate in any of our events.  Prizes may include snacks, books, sports paraphernalia, gift cards, Water Country & Canobie Lake passes and more! You need not be present to win.  Prizes will be drawn randomly throughout the summer after the kick-off (June 24) up until August 8.

Our goal is to have you belong.  IF the teens/tweens get at least 500 receipts in the raffle, we will be offering an UNMASK OVERNIGHT LOCK-IN at the end of August where we will have pizza, snacks, movies, games, and other fun jazz. We are longing for YOU to be part of our SUPER library and SUPERHERO community.  Participate, UNMASK, and win!

Summer reading events have a required registration.  *Register early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMER READING KICKOFF~NORMAN NG MAGIC:  Norman combines original and amazing magic tricks with his unique style of storytelling, action, and audience interaction.  The curtain is pulled back and the audience is invited to a world where anything is possible.

Please register all ages so we can reach you in case of a change in venue due to inclement weather and for the head count.  Non-residents are welcome.   HOLD the date—Wednesday, June 24th, at 6:30pm.  You will not want to miss this fantastic event!

This event was generously sponsored by the Elizabeth Smith Estate and is in partnership with Atkinson Academy.

EVERY HERO HAS A STORY: Welcome to the Kimball Library 2015 Summer Reading Program for youth in kindergarten to grade 5!  This summer we’re having fun getting to know all of the HEROES around us. There are heroes in our community, at home, and heroes we read about in comic books or see at the movies. Even you can be a hero!

Our rules are simple: Come to the library! Have fun reading your books but most of all, enjoy the summer with us!

1. Rolling registration begins June 8 and ends July 31. You MUST come to the library to register, pick up your packet, get a mask and star, and you’re ready to begin!

2. This year we’re counting each time you check out materials when you visit. Put your first name and telephone number on the receipt, and drop it in the big jar. Names will be picked at random for weekly prizes.

3. You will get a star to put on your mask that will be displayed in the library. For every 5 stars (checkouts) you are able to pick a prize from our big bucket OR pick a book to keep for yourself. YOU are responsible for keeping track of your stars.

4. Kids going into the 5th grade, MUST register for this program but can also attend any events listed for their age in the teen program ‘UNMASKED’.

5. Please check your events brochure for all the exciting projects and programs we have planned for you!

RAMBLIN’ RICHARD~ Join us for a ‘Concert in the Courtyard’ on Tuesday, June 16th, from 6:30-8pm: Richard Kruppa, known musically as 'Ramblin ’Richard,” performs songs senior groups and communities love to hear and fondly remember.

Along with these memorable songs, he tells interesting stories. The songs span many years and include familiar American popular songs from the 1930s into the 1960s, along with music from Broadway and motion pictures, and some traditional folk, old-time, Gospel, and patriotic tunes, as well. Along with singing, he accompanies himself on acoustic instruments including guitar, banjo, and ukulele. His stories relate to the songs- how they came to be, what was happening in the world when they were popular, and what they dealt with that may not be apparent. The stories are told in an interesting, '…the rest of the story” manner.

A retired professor, Ramblin’ Richard establishes an especially relaxed, comfortable and casual rapport with his audiences. A seasoned musician and member of the New England Foundation for the Arts, he studied American folk music as a graduate student and was in a group that opened for the Beach Boys and the Lettermen. Recently, the Seacoast, New Hampshire musician provided music for the sound track of a motion picture. Several of his songs are found on CD, and some of his music is included on a 2012 Christmas CD.
