Kimball Library News 4/21/14

Come join us for a spectacular event with author Natasha Lowe!  She will be joining us for a book discussion with grades 3-8 about her book, "The Power of Poppy Pendle."  To be part of this discussion is as simple as asking us for a copy of the book at the main desk.  Registration is required, and you may sign your child up online or ask us to do that for you.  Copies are available now.

Take a peek into the magical world of Poppy.  "Ten-year-old Poppy, born to ordinary parents, has inherited coveted witch power. In Poppy's world, witches work for good and are much valued, but Poppy does not want to be a witch—she wants to be a baker, and she is extremely good at baking. Her parents insist Poppy follow in the footsteps of her great aunt, a famous witch, but Poppy has plans of her own."   We guarantee that this book will make you 'hungry' for more.  :)

Natasha Lowe was born and raised in London, England and developed her love of imagination, good books and tea at a young age.  She came to America and ran a bed and breakfast, offering guests some of her fantastic family recipes.  (Some of these tasty recipes are in the back of ''The Power of Poppy Pendle!'') Mrs. Lowe will even be bringing some cookies with her on her visit to Kimball Library.

She currently lives in Deerfield, MA with her husband, her four children and a stone goose with some magical qualities.   Natasha Lowe will be joining us for some thrilling discussion on Thursday, June 5, at 6:30pm with cookies and signed copies of her novel "The Power of Poppy Pendle" at a discounted author's price.

Kimball Library News 4/14/14

We hardly dare to say it but SPRING HAS SPRUNG!  It’s that glorious time of year to get rid of the old and get on with the new.  In your cleaning frenzy, you may stumble across books, movies, or music that you might like to donate to us.  Got donations?  COME TO US.  We are gearing up for the big sale that will be happening on May 17th from 8am-3pm.  Up until May 15th we are requesting that you bring your oldies but goodies to us.  We do have restrictions on some materials—namely we’d like your non-moldy fiction (not Reader’s Digest condensed books), non-fiction (not textbooks or encyclopedias), and playable DVDs or music CDs.  We no longer accept cassettes or VHS.

Last minute registrations are being taken for our special bimonthly visit from Imajine That Museum on Thursday, April 24, at 10:30am.  Miss Sarah from the museum is visiting and will hold an ART class for ages 3-6.  The limit is ten children maximum.  This month’s theme is ‘Puppet Show’ where you will design your very own paper puppet to make a puppet show at home.   Please give us a call or sign up online.  We do allow age two if they are very ready for crafts and attentive to book and teacher listening.

Tweens and teens have time to come get a book for their respective book discussions in May.  Tweens (grades 5-8) will be meeting on Wednesday, May 7, at 6:30pm to discuss ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio and contemplate the life of August Pullman.  August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face.  Wonder begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.  Are you ‘wonder’ing what happens? Please get your copy at the front desk.

Teens (grades 9-12) will be meeting on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30pm to discuss ‘You’ by Charles Benoit.  You're surprised at all the blood. Maybe if you can figure out where it all went wrong, you can still make it right. Think fast. Time's running out. . .’  Time is running out, teens!  Run and pick up a copy of this book at the main desk.

Midweek fun begins on Wednesday night, April 30th, at 6:30pm.  Come join us for a spooky good time in a spring time ‘Monster Mash’!  We will celebrate with music, games and will create our very own monsters. This event is for grades K-5 and registration is required.

Thursday will be an opportunity for kids to show their creative side.  First register so we will have ample supplies, and then drop in anytime between 10:30am and 2:30pm to make a very simple May basket.  Fill it at home with flowers or candy and then hang it on your neighbor's doorknob!   Ring the bell and say 'HAPPY MAY DAY!

On Friday we have “The Great Scavenger Hunt Adventure” scheduled from 12:00-7:00pm.  Bring children in for a simple, fun scavenger hunt around the library or they can choose a more difficult adventure. Tiny trinkets will be given out for each adventurer who completes the hunt.  See Miss Emily at the Children's Desk between to start your adventure.

We can’t make spring happen on the outside, but we can put a spring in your step on the inside!  Join us on Tuesday, April 22nd, at 6:30pm and you’ll be getting a smile on your face and swaying your toes to the tunes as you listen to AKSARA.

AKSARA, a 6 woman a cappella ensemble from Southern NH, will perform at the Kimball Library on the evening of the 22nd and you’ll definitely want to be here, as well as invite your friends to share in the music.   AKSARA has performed in many local venues over the last 16 years and has produced 5 CD recordings.  AKSARA performs a variety of selections in many styles that are compelling, renewing and healing.

The group is part of Inner Harmony Music, a non-profit organization.  Additional information is available at http://www.victoriaschneider.com/music_aksara_about.html. This free event is sponsored by the wonderfully generous Friends of the Kimball Library.  Refreshments will be served.
