Kimball Library News 6/22/15

SUPER SUMMER PRESCHOOL STORY TIMES all start in July:
MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE: Infants through age 2 with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs.  This national curriculum will keep your child on the go for 30 minutes.  Please register online, over the phone, or in person.  This event brings caretakers and parents together.  Join us on Mondays at 10:30am starting July 13 through August 17.

LITTLE HEROES:  Children ages 2-3 with their caregivers are invited to join us for itty bitty stories, rhymes, finger plays or songs and simple crafts.  Register for Tuesdays at 10:30am beginning July 7 through August 11.

SUPERHERO STORY TIMES: Crafts, music, new friends, and adventures into literacy are found during these classes. Caretakers may stay and listen or relax in another part of the library.  Join us on Fridays at 10:30am for July 10 through August 14.

BOWLING WITH THE BAD GUYS: Be the hero and bowl with the bad guys!  Superheroes always have villains chasing after them! We'll set 'em up, and smack those villains down!
Registration is required for this super event taking place on Monday, July 13th, from 6:30-7:30pm, for children entering kindergarten through grade 5.

SUPER TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: There was not a teen discussion planned for July, but THE TEENS DEMANDED IT!  The chosen book is 'We Were Liars' by E. Lockhart and we will discuss, argue, and yell about this book on Tuesday, July 14th, starting at 6:30pm.

A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.  A revolution. An accident. A secret.  Lies upon lies.  1 love.  The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.  And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

All interested middle and high school students are welcome.  Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.
HOLIDAY HOURS: Please note we are closed both Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 because the holiday lands on a Saturday.  Take advantage and stock up accordingly.

ROLLING SUMMER READING REGISTRATION CONTINUES: It’s not too late to get started!  Please bring in children entering grade K-5 to register for ‘Every Story has a Hero’ and youth entering grade 6 and up to register for ‘Unmask’.  Participation is the key factor in this year’s summer reading program.  Don’t forget Lindsay & Her Puppet Pals show is on Wednesday, July 1st, @6:30pm.  Register the entire family, especially ages 3-8.

SUPERHERO SOAP: Teens and tweens are having an opportunity on Wednesday, July 8th, from 6:30-8:00pm to make some glycerin soap with a usable superhero inside.  You'll get a little learning thrown in about what a hero soap really is, and you'll get to take home what you make.  We even have a ‘magical’ way to show you where the dirt and grim is lurking.  Leading the way will be Superhero Carolyn Nenart and her Super Librarian assistant, Kathy Watson.

You must be ten or entering grade 5 in the fall in order to attend.  Register yourself and a superhero friend!

HEROES VS. VILLAINS, THE OBSTACLE COURSE: Bring your capes and maniacal laughs for the ultimate showdown between heroes and villains.  Come ready to play and get messy.  When you arrive, you will be sorted into the hero or villain team.  (Don't worry - villains are the heroes in their own stories!)  Prove your side superior by overcoming each challenge in this crazy cool obstacle course.

Then, combine ultimate forces to defeat the greatest foe of all time: THE EVIL LIBRARIAN.  (Instead of returning her library books, she keeps them! How rude!)  Can you save the library books?

Registration is required for this super event taking place on Thursday, July 9th, from 6:30-7:30pm, for children entering kindergarten through grade 5.

HOLIDAY HOURS: Please note we are closed both Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 because the holiday lands on a Saturday.  Take advantage and stock up accordingly.

LINDSAY & HER PUPPET PALS: Year round, Lindsay brings her Puppet Pals, lovingly crafted, giant hand puppets and marionettes, to child and family audiences across New England. Filled with silliness, crowd participation, and unique, memorable characters, this series of charming and positive short stories will delight the young and the young at heart!  We are fortunate that Lindsay & Her Puppet Pals will be with us on Wednesday, July 1st, at 6:30pm sharp in the Kimball Courtyard.

Lindsay’s show will highlight the summer reading theme of heroes.  This year the show will feature capes, masks, and misguided acts of strength and bravery, but some of the unlikely puppet heroes will also demonstrate true courage…  That’s your teaser and there’s more to come!

Ideal for ages 3-8, but all ages who appreciate fun shows and puppetry are welcome to attend.  Please register all adults and children so we can contact you in case of a venue change.  Registered non-resident guests are also welcome.  For more information about Lindsay and her craft, please visit www.LindsaysPuppetPals.com.

MAKE & TAKE CRAFT FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY ENTHUSIASTS: Join us anytime starting at 11:30 am until 7:30 pm on July 2nd for a make and take craft all about Independence Day! (While supplies last) Celebrate our country with an assortment of DIY style craft options.  Instructions and supplies will be available for you.  Please make one of each craft per person.  All ages are welcome to participate.  No registration is required.  Drop in as you are able.
