Kimball Library News 5/1/22

Spring has arrived at the Library in the form of a tree bursting with blossoms made from bills of different monetary values. Raffle tickets are available at the main circulation desk and during the May 21st Friends Book & Yard Sale. Come and see this pretty design also known as a money tree.

Tickets are priced as follows: 2 for $5.00, $ 5 for $10.00, or 12 for $20.00. Tickets can be purchased with cash or check only. All proceeds benefit The Friends of the Kimball Library who pour their hearts and souls into providing for the Library what the Town budget cannot in the form of programs, museum passes, and contributions toward large purchases such as the electronic sign.

The drawing will be held here at Kimball Library on Wednesday, June 1 at 3:00. You do not need to be present at the time of the drawing to be the winner.

THE BASICS OF BITCOIN & CRYPTOCURRENCY: Join us on Wednesday, May 27 @ 7:00 PM via ZOOM for this financially informative class.

What are cryptocurrencies? Are they the new frontiers of finance? During this introduction to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, learn about blockchain and data mining, online currency exchanges, digital wallets, investing, and the potential future challenges cryptocurrencies face.

Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, Blockchain ~ What does it mean? You can’t read the news without seeing hype about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Is this the first wave of a cashless future or just an overhyped technology? One thing is for sure: there’s a lot of money riding on its success. Join Michael as he discusses the basics about Bitcoin.

This Zoom is presented by Michael Gershbein from Very Smart People. Mr. Gershbein, while employed as a public librarian for 10 years, provided one-on-one and group instruction in all types of technology. He founded Very Smart People because he loves helping individuals of all ages and realizes that if personal technology isn’t fun and easy to use and doesn’t make our lives better, then it’s probably not worth using!

This program is a collaboration of libraries in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, including the Kimball Library. The program offered through the Kimball Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

MORNING BOOK DISCUSSION: This group of bibliophiles meet monthly to discuss the selection of the month. Even in you don’t care to share, you can listen in. It’s very likely you will enjoy the conversation and make some new friends. Books can be picked up at the main circulation desk.

The book for May 25th at 10:15 is ‘The Soul of an Octopus’ by Sy Montgomery. Please register if you have never attended.

In pursuit of the wild, solitary, predatory octopus, popular naturalist Sy Montgomery has practiced true immersion journalism. From New England Aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, she has befriended octopuses with strikingly different personalities—gentle Athena, assertive Octavia, curious Kali, and joyful Karma. Each creature shows her cleverness in myriad ways: escaping enclosures like an orangutan; jetting water to bounce balls; and endlessly tricking companions with multiple “sleights of hand” to get food.

Spring is here, and we’re done a little spring cleaning and moving in the Youth Services Department. Come see where the graphic novels have moved to and other little known secrets! See some toys make a re-appearance in some new places. Time to play? Time to stay!

BITTER INJUSTICE: As the documentary ‘And Then They Came for Us’ demonstrates; the registration and incarceration of Japanese Americans was one of the worst violations of constitutional rights in American history. Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, the film documents through the use of photos taken by Dorothea Lange and others, the damage this order did to 120,000 people, two thirds of whom were American citizens.  Knowing our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it. "And Then They Came for Us" is a cautionary and inspiring tale.

This film is being shown at the Library on Tuesday, May 3rd at 1:00 PM. Runtime: 50 minutes with discussion time following the film. Please register in person or online on the event calendar.

This event is part of Bitter Injustice: The Internment of Japanese Americans in World War II, a community-wide read project with 10 libraries, 2 high schools, and the Wright Museum. This project is made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about this book, ‘They Called Us Enemy’ by George Takei. We have free copies available for this particular book because it is part of the Bitter Injustice project. (Note the paragraph above. #BitterInjustice2022) We serve candy and the coolest conversation at all of our discussions. Register yourself and your bestie and be here on Wednesday, May 4th, at 6:00 PM.

‘They Called Us Enemy’ is a graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei's childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. Experience the forces that shaped an American icon -- and America itself.

In 1942, at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten "relocation centers," hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard.

They Called Us Enemy is Takei's firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the joys and terrors of growing up under legalized racism, his mother's hard choices, his father's faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future.

What does it mean to be American? Who gets to decide? When the world is against you, what can one person do? To answer these questions, George Takei joins co-writers Justin Eisinger & Steven Scott and artist Harmony Becker for the journey of a lifetime.

Kimball Library News 4/3/22

Did you blink and miss an article? Be sure to check out the website for any of the ‘stay-cation’ events planned for the last week in April. There are at least 2 events per day, and the age groupings vary. Most require registration, so be sure to take a peek and sign us soon.

BOOKS AND MORE: A group of lively adults meet monthly to discuss the book we've chosen for that month. Why not join us for an hour of your time and talk about the book? Hear what others have to say and enjoy conversation with new friends. If you don’t like to talk, just listening works, too! The discussion for April will happen on Wednesday, April 27, at 10:15 AM at the Library. The book selected is The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

In 1986, Henry Lee joins a crowd outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has discovered the belongings of Japanese families who were sent to internment camps during World War II. As the owner displays and unfurls a Japanese parasol, Henry, a Chinese American, remembers a young Japanese American girl from his childhood in the 1940s—Keiko Okabe, with whom he forged a bond of friendship and innocent love that transcended the prejudices of their Old World ancestors.

Following the discussion, a documentary film ‘And Then They Came For Us’ will be shown. As the documentary demonstrates, the registration and incarceration of Japanese Americans was one of the worst violations of constitutional rights in American history. Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Roosevelt on Feb. 19, 1942, the film documents through the use of photos taken by Dorothea Lange and others, the damage this order did to 120,000 people, two thirds of whom were American citizens.  ‘And Then They Came For Us’ brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban. Knowing our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it. ‘And Then They Came for Us’ is a cautionary and inspiring tale.

The book and movie are in conjunction with Bitter Injustice project. This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
