Kimball Library News 4/3/22

Did you blink and miss an article? Be sure to check out the website for any of the ‘stay-cation’ events planned for the last week in April. There are at least 2 events per day, and the age groupings vary. Most require registration, so be sure to take a peek and sign us soon.

BOOKS AND MORE: A group of lively adults meet monthly to discuss the book we've chosen for that month. Why not join us for an hour of your time and talk about the book? Hear what others have to say and enjoy conversation with new friends. If you don’t like to talk, just listening works, too! The discussion for April will happen on Wednesday, April 27, at 10:15 AM at the Library. The book selected is The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

In 1986, Henry Lee joins a crowd outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has discovered the belongings of Japanese families who were sent to internment camps during World War II. As the owner displays and unfurls a Japanese parasol, Henry, a Chinese American, remembers a young Japanese American girl from his childhood in the 1940s—Keiko Okabe, with whom he forged a bond of friendship and innocent love that transcended the prejudices of their Old World ancestors.

Following the discussion, a documentary film ‘And Then They Came For Us’ will be shown. As the documentary demonstrates, the registration and incarceration of Japanese Americans was one of the worst violations of constitutional rights in American history. Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Roosevelt on Feb. 19, 1942, the film documents through the use of photos taken by Dorothea Lange and others, the damage this order did to 120,000 people, two thirds of whom were American citizens.  ‘And Then They Came For Us’ brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban. Knowing our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it. ‘And Then They Came for Us’ is a cautionary and inspiring tale.

The book and movie are in conjunction with Bitter Injustice project. This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities.

BOOK SALE DONATIONS: We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. We are most interested in book titles that are 5 years old or less.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred.  Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have more than a box or two, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.
