THE HEALTH OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER
(Zoom): The Merrimack River has been transformed from one of the most polluted
in the nation to one of the region’s most popular recreational rivers and
vibrant wildlife habitats. Yet every
time a moderate rainstorm passes through the Merrimack Valley, you can be sure
that raw sewage is being discharged into the Merrimack, sometimes so much that
it’s unsafe to swim in the river for days. The summer of 2023 has been a
particularly active period for sewage discharges. Why is this happening, and
what is being done to stop it?
Join John Macone, education and policy specialist at the Merrimack River
Watershed Council, for an in-depth slideshow talk on the Merrimack’s
two-century-long problem of pollution. John will discuss how the problem began,
what’s been done to fix it, what needs to be done in the future and how you can
get involved in helping the Merrimack.
John has served as MRWC’s outreach and education manager since 2017.
Prior to that, he served as editor of the Newburyport Daily News for 14 years,
and has hosted numerous presentations, boat tours and walking tours throughout
the Merrimack River region.
This Zoom program takes place on August 15th at 7:00 PM and is
hosted by the G.A.R. Memorial Library in cooperation with the Kimball Library.
