Kimball Library News 7/23/23

Keep coming to the summer concerts as we still have more to go!

TAKE TWO TRIO: Atkinson’s own Kacie & Eric McFadden, along with Mike Ruggelo of Amesbury, MA, form the crowd pleasing Take Two Trio with great music from the Classic Rock era (60’s, 70’s, & 80’s) right up to the best of today's music.  Don’t miss them on Thursday, August 3rd at 6:00 PM!

*In case of rain, the library concert will be moved to inside the Atkinson Fire Department. We suggest that in the event of rain, you check the Library website for updates or call us.

OPINIONATED READERS: Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about what books to choose for the next round of book discussions on Wednesday, August 9th at 6:00 PM. All the books we read last year were chosen by the teens and tweens in conjunction with the Youth Services Director and Youth Services Librarian. Make your voice be heard and plan ahead. Jot down your favorites in advance so we can discuss them that evening. We serve candy and the coolest conversation. Register yourself and your book-loving bestie.

FAMILY FILM: Coming up on Tuesday, August 15th at 1 PM is a movie for the entire family – ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’! Pack up your kids, the neighborhood kids, and come on down. You don’t even need kids as this film will be fun for all ages.

With help from Princess Peach, Mario gets ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world. Rated: PG  Runtime: 1 hour 32 minutes

THE HEALTH OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER (Zoom): The Merrimack River has been transformed from one of the most polluted in the nation to one of the region’s most popular recreational rivers and vibrant wildlife habitats.  Yet every time a moderate rainstorm passes through the Merrimack Valley, you can be sure that raw sewage is being discharged into the Merrimack, sometimes so much that it’s unsafe to swim in the river for days. The summer of 2023 has been a particularly active period for sewage discharges. Why is this happening, and what is being done to stop it?

Join John Macone, education and policy specialist at the Merrimack River Watershed Council, for an in-depth slideshow talk on the Merrimack’s two-century-long problem of pollution. John will discuss how the problem began, what’s been done to fix it, what needs to be done in the future and how you can get involved in helping the Merrimack.  John has served as MRWC’s outreach and education manager since 2017. Prior to that, he served as editor of the Newburyport Daily News for 14 years, and has hosted numerous presentations, boat tours and walking tours throughout the Merrimack River region.

This Zoom program takes place on August 15th at 7:00 PM and is hosted by the G.A.R. Memorial Library in cooperation with the Kimball Library. Register to receive the link.

WRITE IT OUT: Join us on Wednesday, August 16th at 6 PM. Kids in grades 2-8 are invited to join us to write it out! We'll start off with a prompt or two to read to the class and then free write. All abilities are welcome.

6:00 PM: The music begins! TCMA (formerly the Timberlane Community Band), now in its 23th season, is a free, volunteer band, founded and conducted by Anthony DiBartolomeo, retired Director of Music for the Timberlane Regional School District.  The band performs at various indoor and outdoor venues in the greater Southern New Hampshire area.  Please bring your lawn chairs and/or blanket to sit on.  There is some limited seating in the Library Courtyard as well.  This will be a fun summer night to enjoy with friends and family.  We do suggest carpooling due to limited parking.  The concert is free and open to all regardless if you have tickets for the cookout.
