The
summer reading saga continues. Children,
tweens, and teens may still register to read and win prizes. We still have some available places in a few
of our events, and some events do not require registration. We have a good problem this year, i.e. many
of our activities are booked to capacity.
We apologize if you have attempted to register and are unable to do
so. We have a certain amount of staff
and supplies and are unable to accommodate everyone at once. If you are on a waiting list it’s possible
that a spot may open up for you. Thank
you for liking our events so much!
Spaces
remain at the time of publication in the following events: ‘Beneath the
Surface’ Frisbee Show & Playshop for Grades 5 and up on July 17
(registration required), ‘We DIG Mad Science’ for all ages on July 24 (no
registration necessary), ‘We DIG Fairy Frolics’ for kindergarten through grade
5 on July 25 (registration required), ‘Beneath the Surface’ Jewelry Making for
grades 5-12 on July 31 (registration required), ‘We DIG the Diggers’ for
kindergarten through grade 5 on August 5 (registration required), and the
summer reading finale with Squeezebox Stompers on August 8. Please check online or give us a call for more
details.
We
are excited to have some of our favorite performers with us on Wednesday, July
24, from 6:30 to 7:30pm. MAD SCIENCE is
back! This fun-filled, science
performance, 'Dig into Science!' is designed to get kids excited about the
science that happens underneath the ground! From the layers of the earth to the
critters that live in the soil to natural phenomena that occur underground,
kids will discover some amazing things as we dig deeper! The science of
'digging deep' is presented with topics such as earth's layers, stalactites and
stalagmites, soggy soil, underground creatures, tectonic plates and
earthquakes, and volcanoes. 'Dig into Science!' is designed to entertain and
educate. All ages are welcome to attend without registration. Most
concepts are geared for elementary through high school.
We
have a non-summer reading event on the horizon that we are sure will attract
both teens and adults. On Tuesday, July
16, from 6:30-8pm we’ll be ‘Harnessing History: On the Trail of New Hampshire's
State Dog, the Chinook.’ This program
looks at how dog sledding developed in New Hampshire and how the Chinook played
a major role in this story. Explaining how man and his relationship with dogs
won out over machines on several famous polar expeditions, Bob Cottrell covers
the history of Arthur Walden and his Chinooks, the State Dog of New
Hampshire. Bob's Chinook, aptly named ‘Tug’ will be at the presentation.
The
Chinook is our state dog. The Chinook, a
sled and work dog, is the only breed to have originated in New Hampshire and
one of the few created in America. The breed was started by Arthur Walden in
Wonalancet NH in 1917. The bill was the
idea of a group of seventh graders at the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School in
Bedford.
Our
speaker, Bob Cottrell, holds an MA from the Winterthur Program in Early
American Culture in Delaware. The founding director of the Remick Country
Doctor Museum in Tamworth, he is now the Curator of the Henney History Room at
the Conway Public Library, a Board member at the Conway Historical Society, and
President ex-officio of the Tamworth Historical Society. He serves as an
independent history and museum consultant.
