Kimball Library News 5/22/12

Step up your appetite for summer reading as we kick-off with some amazing events! Not only is Peter Boie, 'Magician for Non-Believers' coming to present an exciting magic show the night of Tuesday, June 19th, at 6:30pm to kick-off the summer reading program, but he also is offering an hour long workshop to let youth in on some of his magical secrets. Peter's Magic Studio is a registration only event for Atkinson residents ages 9-19 versus the 6:30pm show which is open to the public.
Peter (oh boy!) teaches simple magic tricks to help increase confidence and improve communication skills in this hour long hands-on workshop...plus, it’s just fun to fool your friends and family with your newfound magical knowledge. This amazing workshop takes place from 5-6pm, and I don't have to be a magician or a psychic to know that it will fill up quickly. Hop onto the website or skip into the library to register (registration starts on June 4th for this particular event) and your child ages 9 and up will jump for joy at the chance to get into the in-crowd of magicians and legitimately say ‘Abracadabra!’.

Not only are we kicking off the summer with magic, but we are kicking off the summer with music! Tune in on Thursday, June 21st, in the courtyard for the Taylor River Band from 6:30-8pm. You’ll be tapping your toes for sure! The Taylor River Band is a contemporary Bluegrass Band with Heather Mike on Fiddle, Dave Dupouy on Banjo, Ben Molin on Bass, and Doug Molin on Guitar. TRB plays at venues throughout the area. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show! Popcorn will be served throughout the performance.

The above programs are sponsored by the very generous and hardworking ‘Friends of the Kimball Library’. Considering joining them and being part of making things happen! The next meeting is Wednesday, June 20th, at 10:15am. Come and see how you can be part of making your local library great!

Have you marked the date? Tie a string on your finger, make a note in your Palm Pilot, or set the alarm on your iPhone--- Registration for summer reading starts on Thursday, June 14th, and will remain open for one month. There are three distinct programs. Preschool (ages 3-5), Elementary (children entering grade K-5), and T/weens (youth entering grade 6 – age 19) and all may register starting on that date. Statistics show that children who read over the summer and engage their minds don’t lose as much brain power returning in the fall to school. Help your children stay alert! Make the library part of their summer vacation.
