Kimball Library News 2/18/19

LIBRARY BUDDIES STARTS MARCH 5TH! Register now before it’s too late (Grades K-3 and Grades 6-12).

Pop into Kimball Library and be part of the trend that libraries are the happening places to be in any season.  “Library Buddies” is one of the events that has been bursting at the seams for over 10 years.  This crowd-pleasing event will be happening for 7 consecutive weeks on Tuesday from 4-5pm beginning March 5th and ending on April 16th. Each week teens (youth in grades 6-12) will be assigned to little buddies in kindergarten age through grade 3.  Library buddies will read or be read to for the first 30 minutes, followed by puzzles, games, and/or coloring activities.  This is a great opportunity for the younger set to practice listening to books of their choice or for emerging readers to try out their skills on an older buddy.

Need a buddy?  Want to be a buddy?  We need your children to participate and experience the joy of being a literary encourager or participant.  You may register your little buddy online on the children’s calendar, call us and ask for the Children’s Room (603) 362-5234 x224, or drop in and personally speak to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director.  All interested big buddies must speak with Kathy directly and be committed to an early arrival time
.
T/weens in middle or high school, you won’t find a better opportunity to practice your leadership and mentoring skills. Fun will be had by all! You can join us but you must register in advance as soon as possible. Community service hours will be granted at the end of the program.

**Due to the high demand for this program, all the big and little buddies must be registered and committed for all seven weeks unless an exception has been made in advance.  Residents have priority.

DISCOVERING S.T.E.A.M.: We invite preschoolers to explore nature, computers, building, art, numbers, and more in this 6-week program that begins a new leg on March 7th. Engaging stations will allow children to discover and learn at their own pace and interest level. We'll come together at the end of class for a structured story or activity that fits into the theme. At each class, we'll hit on one of the elements of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering) with mathematics and art activities that build on that concept each session. Watch your child's brain and interest in exploring get ignited as they discover S.T.E.A.M.!

Please note that this is a 6-week class on Thursdays at 11:30. There will be another 6-week session offered following a 2-week break. Register preschoolers who are 3 through 6 years old. This class fills up quickly so act NOW.

T/WEEN DINNER THEATRE/BOOK CLUB: The book of the month is ‘The Hate U Give’ by Angie Thomas. This is a special book discussion event for the month of March occurring on the 12th at 6:00pm and all interested t/weens are invited to attend. ‘Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.’

Join us to watch the film adaptation of the book while eating pizza, and then we’ll have a book discussion comparing the book to the movie.  Copies of the book may be checked out from the front desk by anyone with a Kimball, Plaistow, or Sandown Library card in good standing. This special event is part of the combined ‘2109 Community Reads’ project.

This activity is for teens and tweens age 10 and up in lieu of our ‘regular’ book discussion night.  Registration is required to have the right amount of pizza!  Please bring your own beverages in closable containers.

The movie has a run time of 2 hours and 13 minutes and is rated PG 13.  We start PROMPTLY at 6 to be out by 8:30 PM.

ADULT BOOK CLUBS: Need a reading suggestion?  Try out one of our book discussion groups, or just try the book!  March options are on Monday the 18th at 6:30, Tuesday the 19th at 6:00, or Wednesday the 27th at 10:00 AM.  Books are available at the main desk.
