Kimball Library News 11/6/17

We are changing up how we are hosting our ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ this year for the kiddos, and we think you are going to be more than thrilled!

There are ALL DAY opportunities this year on Saturday, December 2nd, from 10-3 when you may leave your children to get some of your personal holiday hoopla accomplished. The age restrictions are for kindergarten through grade 5 for all or part of our Saturday schedule.

We have broken the day into three sections so you won't pick them up in the middle of any activity.  They may stay all or just part of the day, even though it is our expectation is that if they are left with us they will be participating in the activities.   There are several drop off and pick up times as options to choose from.  We are hoping you opt to drop right at 10! Simple bag lunches must be provided by the family. (We cannot heat up or refrigerate your child's food). Please send only water or milk--no juices or soda.

Your children are going to be creating messes and moving to a beat.  Please send them in comfortable, casual clothing and sneakers.  We don't want to inhibit movement or creativity.   The Session blocks are as follows: 10-11:30 is Session 1, 11:30-12 is a lunch break with a 30 minute movie, 12-1:30 is Session 2, and at 1:30 to 2:55 Session 3, a healthy snack will be provided and more crafts and activities will wrap up the day.

*All 'Drop 'n Shop' participants must be at least in kindergarten (5 years old as of September 30th, 2017) to be left without an adult. All ages for the events this day must have an adult fill out a waiver on that morning to be left here in our care. Children ages 10 and up are allowed to stay without an adult or waiver according to library policy but we need to know how to reach you in event of emergency. Thank you for your cooperation.  All children must be picked up by 2:55.  No exceptions.

HOUR OF CODE: What's the Hour of Code?
The hour of code is a family event coming to Kimball Library via the Sylvan Center in Salem, NH as part of a movement to enrich and educate during National Computer Science Week. You'll be virtually joining other students all over the world. Your child will learn computer programming through fun and engaging activities. Join Sylvan and Kimball Library for the movement by registering and coming to this 'Hour of Code' event.

This year we’ll be celebrating and coding together on Thursday, December 7th, from 6-7pm with youth in grades kindergarten through grade 5.  Registration is required.  (Older t/weens may assist for service hours if they email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com directly.)  As an aside, there will be no ‘Girls Who Code’ on Tuesday that week so those attendees may sign up for this instead.

There will be a total of 12 devices available from the library and Sylvan, so if you have any device or gadget that you can connect to our public wifi that your child is familiar with and would prefer, please bring it. This will leave those for the 'device-less' to use. (*BYOD=BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE) Laptops are preferable over tablets. Once again, you don't *have* to bring anything other than enthusiasm and a smile. (In partnership with 'Sylvan of Salem'Sylvan.Salem@sylvanlearning.com)

UPCOMING BOOK DISCUSSIONS: As we near the holidays some of the book clubs alter their meeting times to better accommodate the members.  We have discussions for children in kindergarten all the way up to our seniors.  Please check the online calendar and give us a call if you are unsure of any November or December alterations.  As always, we have enough books for all interested children or adults who choose to register and attend.

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed on a Thanksgiving hiatus from Thursday, November 23 to Friday, November 24.  We are open our usual November 22 (Thanksgiving Eve) until 8pm, and our usual Saturday hours 10-3 on the 25th.  Stock up accordingly to keep the two day loans as long as possible.  (Take them on Tuesday and keep them until Saturday before we close.)  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Kimball Library News 10/30/17

We have lots of holiday hoopla coming at you, and all of those types of events require registration and fill up quickly.  Get out the date book and make your reservations.  We want your holidays to be happy!

BOXWOOD TREE CONSTRUCTION: Learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays. The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries, and natural gypsophila.

This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy or a wonderful present to give away.  Felicia Motherway will be your facilitator, and she will not let you leave with a Charlie Brown tree regardless of your skill set.

Space is limited for this event taking place on Monday, November 27th, from 6:00-8:00pm.  Registration is secured by coming to the library and paying the materials fee of $36 in advance by cash or check (made out to Felicia Motherway).  Make this a tradition by starting this year.

HOLIDAY SCRAPBOOKING CARDS & GIFT TAGS: Tis the season to get started!  Join us on Thursday, November 30th, from 6:00-8:00pm for scrapbooking for the holidays. We can all create some lovely and unique holiday and gift cards for the upcoming seasons.  Using stamping and scrapbook techniques, come learn how to create eight beautiful cards and some gift tags. Kimball Library’s own gifted scrapbooker, Cathie Piccolo, will be instructing the class along with Lois Powers. We will be providing pre-cut materials, embellishments, and support to make your custom greeting cards.  Walk away with some unique cards and gift tags to use this holiday season or in the future.

Registration is required and seating is limited for this workshop.  A non-refundable materials fee of $15.00 must be paid at time of registration. Stop in at the library and register today before it’s too late!  If you are experienced at scrapbooking and wish to bring your own supplies such as adhesives and craft scissors to work with, we encourage you to do so.

UPCOMING TUESDAY AFTEROON MOVIES: We pull up the comfy chairs and plug in the popcorn machine on many (not all) Tuesday afternoons for free films at 1pm.  The early birds get the best seats!
Coming attractions include ‘The Glass Castle’ on Tuesday, November 14th, a story about a young girl comes of age in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who's an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father who would stir the children's imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty.  This film is rated PG-13 and runs for 2 hours 7 minutes.

Please visit the website for forthcoming titles.  Titles are subject to change, so check before you come if you do not like surprises.  :)
