Kimball Library News 2/3/14

Winter vacation week for many of the local schools is right around the corner (February 24-March 1) and we’re continuing our series on ‘What shall I do with the kids?”  Please take advantage of our varied activities and events as well as our museum passes.  If you head to our website and click on the calendar events icon you’ll see the details for each activity or museum.  Plan ahead and stay tuned to our weekly press release either here or on the Kimball Library blog.

Tuesday, February 25^th, is day two of our vacation week events.  Children will have a choice of ‘Pancakes Galore’ at either 10:15 or 11:30am.  WE LOVE PANCAKES and it’s the perfect day to share them with your children.  We hope they’ll come and eat them with us as well as listen to pancakes books, play pancakes games, watch pancake videos (you get the idea!) This activity is for children only in the parameters listed.  Register ages 2 – kindergarten for 10:15-11am.  Register grades 1-6 for 11:30am-12:30pm.  For families that have a child in both age groups offered, we ask that you sign up in the younger (10:15) group. We’ll have all the toppings they’ll love.  Activities suit the age groupings listed and are for the children.  Non-residents may register one day before the event (February 24) only.

We are extremely excited about Wednesday, February 26^th, which is day three of vacation week events.  Get pumped with us for ‘Frosty’s Magic B-Day Party’ (famous as the Greg & Alex Show) on Wednesday, February 26, from 6:30-7:30pm.

The ‘Frosty’s Magic B-day Party’ show is entirely themed around celebrating Frosty the snowman’s birthday.  This unique show involves magic, audience participation, comedy, free magical gifts for all the children and children at heart, and Malcolm (Malcolm the Rabbit in the hat puppet).  Greg also brings his sidekick, Alex the dog, to each show for photo ops.  Bring your camera!

Please register ALL (adults included) for ‘Frosty’s Magic B-day Party’ as we have a maximum room capacity.  *Preschool age children are welcome, but do remember that we seat children on the floor and if they are younger than kindergarten you must sit with them in hugging distance.  This program was generously sponsored by The Friends of Kimball Library.  Don’t miss out on coming or thanking them!

We will be closed on Monday, February 17th, for Presidents' Day.  Stock up accordingly.  You’ll get an extra day with the newest 2 day loan movies.  Ready, set, PLAN!

Kimball Library News 1/27/14

Winter vacation week for many of the local schools is right around the corner (February 24-March 1.)  Please take advantage of our varied activities and events.  Our regular preschool classes that week except for Mother Goose are set aside for a change of pace.  Do note that some of our events are registration only while others can just be dropped in on.  If you head to our website and click on the calendar events icon you’ll see the details for each activity.  Plan ahead and stay tuned to our weekly press release either here or on the Kimball Library blog.

Monday, February 24^th, kicks off our vacation week events.  Children will have a choice of ‘Mother Goose on the Loose’, ‘Wii Party’, or ‘BINGO for Books’.  Details for these events are described below.

‘Mother Goose on the Loose’ generally meets every Monday at 10:30am.  This is an action-packed class where we participate in rhymes, finger plays, songs, scarf and bells activities, circle dances and more.  This is designed from the nationwide curriculum that has a repeating cyclical rhythm to it.  Children must be registered and be committed to weekly participation (understanding that kids are kids and things come up.)  Miss Kathy will have you tapping your toes, chanting poems, and singing in no time!  Registration is required.

Wii Party will be happening on Monday, February 24^th, from 12 noon-4pm and youth in grades K-8 are invited to play.  Wii like to party on vacation!  Drop in and play Wii Party or Mario Kart.  There are a variety of games in these two discs and some are as short as 5 minutes, so you don't need a long-term commitment to come play.  Drop in to check it out and feel free to bring your friends for competition.  Preschoolers may try the equipment if parents are hugging distance away and will play the games alongside them.

Also on Monday, February 24^th, from 6-7:30pm we’ll be hosting Bingo for Books.  It's always great to play BINGO and go home with a free book, too. This vacation week activity is for children in kindergarten-grade 5. Young children will need an adult to help them play. See how many cards you can manage and how lucky you are! Our book prizes may be new or gently used.  Drop in for a fun evening with your friends.  Come for all or part of the time.

Kimball Library News 1/20/14

New Hampshire Teens, ages 13 – 18, have a chance to win $275.00 when they create 30- to 90-second public service announcements that promote reading and libraries.  As part of the national Collaborative Summer Reading Program, the 2014 Teen Video Challenge theme this year is ‘‘Spark a Reaction’’ One winner is selected from each state.  Videos can be created individually or as part of a team effort.  To learn more about the video challenge visit (http://yals.nhlibrarians.org/programming/teen-summer-reading/teen-video-challenge).  So spark your imagination and start the video rolling.  Completed entry forms must be received by February 14, 2014.  Put Kimball Library on the map and win!

Step back in time with us and this upcoming living history program featuring 'Mary Todd Lincoln: An Unconventional Woman' right here at Kimball Library on Wednesday, February 12th, from 6:30-8:00pm.  This 'sure to be a great night out' event is sponsored by the NH Humanities Countil Humanities to Go grant and the generous Friends of Kimball Library.

Raised in a slaveholding family, Mary Todd Lincoln evolved into an advocate for abolition. The intellectual equal of well-educated men, she spoke her mind openly in an era when a woman’s success in life was measured by marriage and motherhood. Against her family’s wishes, she married the man she loved and partnered with him to achieve their goal of becoming President and First Lady.

Sparkling with humor and insight, Sally Mummey as Mary Lincoln shares stories of their life and love; triumphs and challenges; and life in the White House during the tumultuous years of the Civil War.  Sally Mummey is an award winning lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters.  She resides in Seabrook, NH.

Kimball Library News 1/13/14

Tweens or teens, we have book discussions geared for your enjoyment with friends your age, stories to share, themes to ponder, and candy to consume.  Tweens (grades 5-8) generally meet the first Wednesday of the month, and teens (grades 9-12) meet the second Wednesday.  Both meetings start at 6:30pm. We have enough copies of the titles for cardholders to borrow one.

On February 5th, the tweens will be meeting to discuss ‘The Wanderer’ by Sharon Creech.  Teens will meet on February 12th to discuss ‘The Name of the Star’ by Maureen Johnson.  Newcomers and friends from other towns are welcome.  Please register in person or online so we know how much candy to have on hand.  If you have any questions please direct them to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director.

We also have knitting for beginners or for those who’ve been knitting for decades.  Just bring needles and yarn if you are new and our ‘professionals’ can help you.  Seasoned knitters should bring their on-going projects.  Come cozy up in the Atkinson Room of the library, share some laughs, drop a stitch or two, and make some new friends. Knitters are here on Tuesdays and Friday mornings beginning at 10:30am.

Keenagers (adults NOT in their teen years :) are invited to play Wii Sports on Friday mornings at 10:30am on our Wii system.  This is a great time to come participate or observe.  Wii will give opportunity to try bowling, golf, tennis, baseball, or skiing.  Come for part or all of the time allotted.  This is an adult only event and the participants choose the games.  The current crowd is all about bowling!  Stop by and hear all the laughter and enjoy some good, friendly competition.

If you’re wondering what the Jack Frost Jamboree is, wonder no more!  Stop by on Saturday, January 25th, between 10:30am and 2:30pm and check out the food, crafts, games, snowshoeing, miniature golf, and all around good family fun!  Children under 10 must be accompanied by adults.

Kimball Library News 1/6/14

If you missed round one of relaxation techniques, it’s not too late to get in on learning how to unwind and mediate.  Please consider joining instructor, Nanci L. Meli, on Saturday, January 18^th, from 10:15-11:15am.  Learn basic breathing techniques & instructions on beginning a daily meditation practice. Pen & paper for note taking are encouraged.

 

Nanci has taught 'Well Being' Meditation workshops throughout the New England area to (Health Care & Legal Organizations, Educational Systems, Colleges & Corporate Businesses) since 2000. She has been instructing private meditation sessions since 1992.   She received her Mindfulness Certification in teaching meditation & peaceful communication with Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh in 2000.  This is a free workshop and a great way to start 2014.

You would NEVER want to miss out on our Jack Frost Jamboree—it’s our 4^th annual winter event coming up on Saturday, January 25^th, from 10:30am-2:30pm.  You may drop in and stay for all or part of the time.  We have so many creative activities planned for the whole family; it’s going to be snap happy fun!  Think ‘winter carnival’ with a twist.  Take a look at our line-up below.  Do note that some events only happen during a particular time frame and for other events such a snowshoeing or the fire pit we need the weather to cooperate.

We also allow Atkinson teens who need community service hours to help out with games or face painting if they (not parents) contact Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, well in advance and get on the docket.

Kimball Library News 12/30/13

Off with the old and on with the new, but don’t throw out perfectly wonderful ‘old’ things!  We are here to remind you that we had story times in the fall, and we will continue to offer them throughout the winter and spring as we have lots of fun things to teach and create with your preschoolers.

We're kicking off the week of story hours the first full week of January beginning on the 6th.  We offer Mother Goose on the Loose for infants ages 0-2 on Mondays, Kiddie Lit classes for ages 3-6 at 11:30am on Tuesdays,  Kiddie Lit also at 10:15 and 11:30am on Fridays, and Bitty Books for ages 2-3 on Tuesdays at 10:15am.  These classes all require registration and commitment. 

As a bonus, we also offer a Friday night simple story time for ages 4-8 known as PJ Peeps.  Pajama clad children may drop in for stories and a snack.  Friends are always welcome.

What about the exploring Wenham Musuem that is a new pass to the library just this past year? Bring the entire family to discover the treasures of childhood and explore how New Englanders have lived, worked, dressed and played from the 17th century to today at the Wenham Museum. Enjoy the world-famous doll and toy collection and delightful model train gallery. Learn from the historic costume, textile, and photograph collections. Step back in time on a guided tour of the circa 1690 Claflin-Richards House…then experience hands-on history in the Family Discovery Gallery. Changing special exhibitions mean there is always something new to see!  These passes are available for Kimball patrons in good standing and can be reserved online, over the phone, or in person.

As always, TEENS, we NEED YOU!  Nominate FLUME nominee titles today!  The Flume Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Flume Award.  We welcome suggestions from teens in grades 9-12 of fiction and nonfiction books with teen appeal, with publication dates from 2011-2013. 

Your nominations must have a publication date within the last two years. If the book is part of a series, it must be able to stand alone, meaning a reader doesn’t have to read the other books in the series to understand what’s going on.
