Kimball Library News 5/4/15

WIGGLERS BEFORE SUMMER:  Preschool children ages 3-6, make letters with your bodies, learn some alphabet sign language, run and jump to rhyming words, and dance, dance, DANCE!

Join Michelle Collins--former teacher, curriculum designer, Zumba instructor, and homeschooling mom to combine letters and movement to jump start your children into literacy.  This is your last opportunity for these classes before summer begins.

Registration is required.  Catch us in June on the 4^th at 1pm or the 18^th at 10:30am.

WANT TO KNOW MORE?: Are you interested in discovering more about your roots and heritage?    We have two available databases for your research—Heritage Quest and Ancestry Library Edition.  We have some brochures with helpful research hints.  You can access these databases at the library on our free computers or through links on our website which you can access from home.  The library only edition has a way for you to send your information to your home.  Enquiring minds want to know! Discover your family history today!

LEGO CLUB: Welcome to the Lego Club!  Our second meeting is Saturday, June 13^th, from 1-2pm.

We'll gather together one Saturday every month to create anything we can imagine.  We will spend the first half of LEGO Club building individual challenges. For example, can you complete the challenge of 15?  How many things can you build in fifteen minutes with only 15 pieces?  How many types of bridges can you build?  The options are limitless!

During the second half of the club, you will be split into groups and given a theme.  You can make anything you'd like as long as it is done together and creates one large project.  The completed projects will be on display in the library until the next club meeting.  This event is for grades K-5. Registration is required.

Kimball Library News 4/27/15

SPRING ART EXHIBIT:  Drop by and take a look at our local talent during the month of May.  Jackie Cunningham's oil painting class is up for viewing on our walls!  Ms. Cunningham is proudly featuring works by her students exhibiting beautiful landscapes and still lifes.  The show runs from May 1 through May 30.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 8th from 6:00 - 7:30pm.  Refreshments will be served.

Featured artists of the class are: Carol Boudreau, Linda Balut, Linda Bourassa, Cynthia Buchan, Dorothy Kantola, Sylvia Markell, and Grace Frittitta.  For questions about the exhibit please contact Jackie at 603 401-2779.

MAGICAL MONTHLY MOVIE: Join us for ‘Paddington′ on the big screen!  Register all ages (friends and adults included) on the link so we can have a head count.   You may bring seating from home or pillows to sprawl out, otherwise we have chairs for you.  Run time: 95 minutes

Rating: PG

**Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult.  Children ages 6-9 must have a waiver signed the day of the actual event with a phone number of where the adult/guardian can be reached. Please don't drop your children off without coming in.

TECH TUTORIALS:  Tech THIS out!  If you have an e-reader or gadget that you want to learn how to use with free downloadable books, then we can help you.  You can have a brief lesson here called “Turn it On!” on your tech toy (Kindle, iPad, iPod, tablet, smart phone or other device compatible with Overdrive) and learn how to put a free library e-book on it.  This is a basic tutorial for those new to tech toys or those who are nervous about using them. 

Please register for an appointment.   Available time slots are on the online calendar link right on our website at www.kimballlibrary.com.  Got questions regarding what you should bring?  Ask for Kathy Watson (tech toy technician) at (603) 362-5234.  (These tutorials are for resident card holders in good standing only, please.)

Kimball Library News 4/20/15

TMNT EVENT: Cowabunga, dudes ages 4-8!  Register and join us for a turtle of a good time on Thursday, May 7^th, from 6-7pm.  Come immerse yourself in the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with read along stories and episodes featuring those famous four.  Once we’re ready to use our ninja skills, we will make a craft and play some fun games.  We’ll learn just how many pizzas we can feed Michaelangelo and answer some important questions: who are these guys named after anyways? How in the world did they become mutant ninjas?  We’ll find this out and more!

THE MAKING OF STRAWBERY BANKE:  Join us on Tuesday, May 12, from 6:30-8pm to explore the history Strawbery Banke.  Local legend says Strawbery Banke Museum began when a Portsmouth librarian gave a rousing speech in 1957. The backstory, however, is richly complex. This is a dramatic tale of economics, urban renewal, immigration, and historic architecture in New Hampshire’s only seaport. J. Dennis Robinson, author of an award-winning 'biography” of the 10-acre Strawbery Banke campus, shares the history of 'America’s oldest neighborhood.” Tapping into private letters, unpublished records, and personal interviews, Robinson explores the politics of preservation. Using colorful and historic illustrations, the author looks candidly at mistakes made and lessons learned in this grassroots success story.

J. Dennis Robinson has published over 1,000 articles on New Hampshire history and culture. His books for young readers include biographies of Jesse James and Lord Baltimore. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). His two most recent books on privateering and the War of 1812 appeared in 2011. Robinson is also editor of SeacoastNH.com, a Web site about NH history and culture that attracts thousands of visitors daily. His lectures are designed to make history both entertaining and accessible to all audiences.
