Kimball Library News 6/4/18

Summer reading registrations are happening! Don’t miss out. The sooner the kids and teens are registered will be the sooner they can start winning prizes!

SIXTIES INVASION: Please join us on Thursday, June 28th from 6 - 8 PM for the ‘60s Invasion band. Come out and enjoy music from the 1960s: The Beatles, Frankie Valley, The Temptations & more.

The group has performed throughout New England, including playing shows on the Mt. Washington Cruise Ship on Lake Winnipesaukee and for the Lowell Spinners Red Sox minor league baseball team. The Sixties Invasion band includes Jack Little: Bass, Artie Shannon: Drums, Rich Ranalli: Guitar & Vocals, Jake Smith: Guitar, and the incomparable, Gino DiMao on vocals. The Musical Director is international touring artist, Professor David Vose.

This musical opportunity sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. If you haven’t had a chance to experience a concert in our courtyard, you are missing out! Pack up lawn chairs, blankets, use our stadium seating for this lovely acoustic experience. Invite friends and neighbors!

SUMMER PRESCHOOL CAMPS: The academic year story times (Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, STEAM, Sensory Story Time, and Kiddie Lit) will all be ending by June 15^th. Not to fear, we have summer camps for those age groups starting in July. Register online or call the library for the following: Mother Goose on Mondays (babies and toddlers), Bitty Books on Tuesdays (ages 2+ to 3+), and Kiddie Lit on Fridays (ages 3-6). All camps start at 10:30 AM and have a six week run. We realize you may not be able to attend for all 6 classes, but register for all and just let us know when you’ll be absent. We look forward to spending summer with your littles!

T/WEEN SUMMER STITCH ROCKS: Novice or seasoned knitters or crocheting peeps are invited to join us to stitch for charity or personal use. We have seasoned folks who can start you or help you progress. If you are new to the craft do not purchase anything before you come talk to us.

There are 90 minutes set aside, but come when you can and leave when you must. If you register your name stays on for the summer. Just reply to the reminder email if you don't plan to attend on any particular week.

Knitting and crocheting ROCKS! This class is for t/weens entering grade 5 and up and takes place every Monday starting at 3 PM. Register once starting June 18^th.

MARBLE RUNS ROCK: Join us for some time exploring with our STEM building toys and build your brain power while you're at it! Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our marble runs.

Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects (marbles) as potential choking hazards.

Come by anytime between 10:30- 4:30 to enjoy these STEM toys on Thursday, July 5^th.

Kimball Library News 5/28/18

It’s exciting when the teen book group reads a novel that is later made into a movie. That is the the case with the book ‘Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda’ by Becky Albertalli. To celebrate we are planning on viewing the film starting at 7PM on 6/13. The t/weens read this as a group earlier in the year for teen book discussion, and now we will compare the book to the movie. We’re meeting after an abbreviated session of our June book discussion on Wednesday the 13^th that starts at 6:30. People who did not read the book are still welcome to join us for this film or the discussion around ‘Flowers for Algernon’ by Daniel Keyes which is the June book of the month.

The film has a run time of 110 minutes and will finish after the library is officially closed, around 9pm. It is rated PG-13. We welcome teens and tweens in middle school or high school to register to join us. We’re sure the film will generate much discussion the way the book did!

UKULELES ROCK with LET’S PLAY MUSIC: Have you ever wanted to learn the ukulele? This instrument is among the easiest to learn and fun to play, making it a popular choice for all ages! You will come away from this hands-on, 45 minute workshop knowing basic chord forms and everything you need to know to play some simple two to three chord songs. Dazzle your friends, family and yourself with your new found musical talent. If you already have a ukulele, feel free to bring it. If not, we’ll have several on hand for you to try.

This workshop is provided free of charge by Let’s Play Music as part of their outreach initiative to build music appreciation and literacy in the community. Let’s Play Music offers a full array of programming including private lessons, rock bands, choral groups and community performances in Derry, Manchester, Hooksett and Salem NH. LEARN MUSICALLY AND ROCK ON: Whether you are an experienced musician, or you have no experience with music other than listening to it, you can learn something new about several different musical skills at this event on Wednesday, June 27^th, at 6:30 PM.

Learn from the experts! You will have a chance to learn some basic ballet and jazz dance steps, learn about different instruments that make up a band or orchestra, and get an introduction to the wonderful flute instrument!

Join us for some skill building and musical fun as we round out the evening with games like 'musical chairs' and 'guess the instrument'. Registration is required for grades K-5.

Kimball Library News 5/21/18

Steve Lewis, an Atkinson resident and history major, will reflect on the importance of the historical women of Atkinson at the Kimball Library on Thursday, June 7^th, starting at 6:30 PM.

Elizabeth Smith happened to be the sister of Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, America's second President. Elizabeth Smith was the second wife of Parson (Stephen) Peabody of Atkinson. Mr. Peabody became the first Minister of the Congregational Church of Atkinson and also started Atkinson Academy in 1787 which became one of the first coeducational schools of its kind in 1794 at the persistence of his daughter Polly.

What do these historic stories tell us about our town and the women of Atkinson today?

This event is sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society. It is free and open to the public. Registration is requested so we can properly arrange seating.

SELF-DEFENSE ROCKS WITH CHRIS FAZZIO: Women, but ESPECIALLY teenagers are encouraged to register for this Saturday special event taking place on June 23^rd at 10:30 AM. We are hoping that at least half of the registrants are in the teen years. This is ‘their’ first summer reading event that belongs to the theme ‘Libraries Rock’.

Women beginning at age 13 and up are invited to join us to learn practical self-defense strategies that will empower you and give you confidence to protect yourself. It is not required, but this might be a great time for mothers and daughters or grandmothers and granddaughters to take part in a class together. Register every female participant ages 13+.

Chris will cover: Body positioning for good balance, basic blocks and attacks, nonverbal cues for prevention, and tips on how to detect potential situations.

This is based on the C.O.B.R.A. Self-Defense System & traditional Kung Fu with certified instructor and Atkinson resident, Chris Fazzio.

About the Instructor: Chris Fazzio has been the Martial Arts Director at Yang's Martial Arts for over 20 years. He has trained extensively in Kung Fu & practices a balanced teaching philosophy mixing discipline & fun to keep his students engaged & challenged physically & mentally. Mr. Fazzio is also a Certified C.O.B.R.A. Instructor, a self-defense program designed by law enforcement that focuses on reality-based drills & scenarios. He combines his background in Kung Fu & wrestling as both an athlete & a coach with the easy, practical techniques of C.O.B.R.A to teach children & adults.

FRANCE ROCKS: Bonjour! We 'ROCK' with France on Monday, June 25^th, at 6:30 PM with our books, food, music, and craft. Come make an Eiffel Tower to eat! French cuisine at its best. Fantastique! Register all youth entering grades K-5 in the Fall of 2018.
