CHANGE of PLANS~ The July evening BOOK DISCUSSION of ‘Sumner Island’ has been changed from July 15 to July 22^nd because the author of the book of the month will be joining us.

Take a peek inside~ A trip to Sumner Island for a séance is right up historian Mitch's alley, but something is awry, the magnificent hotel at the island's center seems to keep changing...

Local author, Michael Cormier, will available to discuss this great summer read.  We always welcome newcomers to the group, and this is the perfect month to try us out.  Ask for a copy of the book of the month at the front desk.  If you don’t have a chance to read it, feel free to drop by and listen to the conversation and meet the author.

SPARK A CRIME~ The t/weens will have an opportunity on Tuesday, July 22^nd, to learn and experience a bit of forensics with our guest scientist, Steve Theberge.

The query of the evening is ‘Whodunit’?  Help solve a crime by identifying types of ink using chromatography.  This is a teen-friendly crash course in forensics.  Please limit registration to youth ages 10-19. (Residents only, until the day before the event.)

T/WEENS enrolled in the ‘Spark a Reaction’ reading program: As always, REGISTER & ATTEND teen events gets you two raffle tickets!

WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM~ Join Valentine & Sons Seed Company and discover 'Where Your Food Comes From' with the Gardening Rocks Mobile Farm. This program is designed to show children in grades K-6 where the food they eat really comes from.  They will be able to go home with something they really planted and watch it grow.

*Register youth in grades K-6 to attend on Wednesday, July 23, at 6:30pm. We are most thankful that this gardening event is graciously sponsored by the Atkinson Garden Club.

Kimball Library News 6/30/14

Each week we’ll continue to offer up what’s in the queue for preschool, elementary, middle and high school ages for the summer.  Please remember to first register for summer reading as a whole and then register for each individual event that you plan to attend. 

FIZZ BOOM BUILD that SOUND!  Come make a home instrument then join in our band and hear the sweet sounds of music all around! Hopefully it will be just perfect for a courtyard concert outside! Kazoos and all!  Register children entering grades K-5 to join in the fun.  The ruckus will be happening on Monday, July 16^th, at 6:30pm.

SPARK A CANDLE!  Teens and tweens from ages 10-19 will be making sparks and candles on Tuesday, July 15^th, at 6:30pm along with Kathy Watson from Kimball Library and Carolyn Nenart from the Wenham Museum. 

Can you make a spark or a flame from flint?  You’ll get an opportunity to try.  (It’s a lot harder than it looks).  Be prepared to make a sand candle as well as one other candle of your choice with a funky geometric design.  Keep them because they’re cool or give them away as gifts. 

Please respect our age restrictions and this event is for residents only as we are nearly full with Atkinson youth.  Registration in advance is required.

On Wednesday, July 16^th, at 6:30pm the AWCC is generously sponsoring “Science Isn’t Always Pretty” at Atkinson Academy.  This show is being performed by the popular and amazing Keith Michael Johnson who dazzled us in the fall with a sold-out show with bubbles. 

This beguiling program hits youth where they live.

We cover a lot of ground, from snake skins to simple machines, superstitions to Isaac Newton. Each topic builds upon the last until we realize: 1. Science is simply the way we describe why things happen and how stuff works.  2. We don’t have to wait to become scientists before we can start enjoying science.

The long-time success of ‘Science Isn’t Always Pretty’ hinges on 50 minutes of audacious show & tell, outrageous facts, scatology & more.

We’ll meet a famous scientist (Antoine Lavoisier), dissect an owl pellet to see what it ate for lunch, chemically conjure a batch of Slime (solid or liquid?) to see how well it flies, and break the sound barrier with an everyday machine that travels over 900 miles an hour.

Celebrate investigation & out-of-the-box questions in pursuit of a love of science.

Once again, this event is open to all ages (geared for ages 6 and up) and will take place at 6:30pm at Atkinson Academy. Please register.  Non-residents are welcome.

Continuing with our ongoing summer reading article… we have so many exciting events coming up for preschool, elementary, middle and high school ages for the summer.  Please remember to first register for summer reading as a whole and then register for each individual event that you plan to attend. 

SPARK an LED THROWIE!  This should ‘spark’ an interest in all t/weens ages 10-19.  On Tuesday, July 8^th, at 6:30pm we’ll be making LED throwies, learning the science behind them, and then throwing them at some targets.  LED throwies are an inexpensive way to add color to any ferromagnetic surface in your neighborhood. A throwie consists of a lithium battery, a 10mm diffused LED and a rare-earth magnet taped together. Throw it up high and in quantity to impress your friends and city officials.  Our guest scientist for the evening of throwies will be Dan Heer.  Come make a throwie, toss at some targets, and light up your night! 

This program is for residents only up until the day of the event.  Non-residents can sign-up 24 hours prior to the event should space open for additional participants.  Age restrictions will be enforced.   Raffle tickets will be awarded to “Spark a Reaction” t/weens that register and attend.

SPARK a CODE ORANGE discussion!  Lovers of candy and exciting books need to rush to the library to get their copy of ‘Code Orange’ by Caroline Cooney.  This edge-of-your-seat thriller will leave you breathless.  This event is open to t/weens ages 10-19 on Wednesday, July 9^th, at 6:30pm.  For middle and high school students who have registered for the event, read and attend, this is worth 4 raffle tickets in the jar toward your goal of winning prizes and covering Kathy with critters and creatures!  Non-residents and guests are welcome to attend but must procure a copy of the book on their own.
