Kimball Library News 10/30/17

We have lots of holiday hoopla coming at you, and all of those types of events require registration and fill up quickly.  Get out the date book and make your reservations.  We want your holidays to be happy!

BOXWOOD TREE CONSTRUCTION: Learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays. The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries, and natural gypsophila.

This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy or a wonderful present to give away.  Felicia Motherway will be your facilitator, and she will not let you leave with a Charlie Brown tree regardless of your skill set.  

Space is limited for this event taking place on Monday, November 27^th, from 6:00-8:00pm.  Registration is secured by coming to the library and paying the materials fee of $36 in advance by cash or check (made out to Felicia Motherway).  Make this a tradition by starting this year.

HOLIDAY SCRAPBOOKING CARDS & GIFT TAGS: Tis the season to get started!  Join us on Thursday, November 30^th, from 6:00-8:00pm for scrapbooking for the holidays. We can all create some lovely and unique holiday and gift cards for the upcoming seasons.  Using stamping and scrapbook techniques, come learn how to create eight beautiful cards and some gift tags. Kimball Library’s own gifted scrapbooker, Cathie Piccolo, will be instructing the class along with Lois Powers. We will be providing pre-cut materials, embellishments, and support to make your custom greeting cards.  Walk away with some unique cards and gift tags to use this holiday season or in the future. 

Registration is required and seating is limited for this workshop.  A non-refundable materials fee of $15.00 must be paid at time of registration. Stop in at the library and register today before it’s too late!  If you are experienced at scrapbooking and wish to bring your own supplies such as adhesives and craft scissors to work with, we encourage you to do so.

UPCOMING TUESDAY AFTEROON MOVIES: We pull up the comfy chairs and plug in the popcorn machine on many (not all) Tuesday afternoons for free films at 1pm.  The early birds get the best seats!
Coming attractions include ‘The Glass Castle’ on Tuesday, November 14^th, a story about a young girl comes of age in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who's an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father who would stir the children's imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty.  This film is rated PG-13 and runs for 2 hours 7 minutes.

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed on a Thanksgiving hiatus from Thursday, November 23-Friday, November 24.  We are open our usual November 22 (Thanksgiving Eve) until 8pm, and our usual Saturday hours 10-3 on the 25^th.  Stock up accordingly to keep the two day loans as long as possible.  (Take them on Tuesday and keep them until Saturday before we close.)  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Kimball Library News 10/23/17

Novice knitters and beginning crochet kids gathered on Mondays during the summer to learn how to make baby hats for charity.  These hats were donated to the Pregnancy Care Center in Haverhill, MA.  The ‘Stitch-a-Bit’ kids started in January and are continuing to meet on Mondays between 2:30 and 4:30pm at the Kimball Library in Atkinson, NH.  Children take the bus here after school to knit and crochet with their peers.  We have seasoned teachers to help us out.  All youth ages 10 and up are welcome.  One bus from each school (Atkinson Academy, TRMS, TRHS) does drop at the library.  Make arrangements through your school if you’d like to take advantage.

Also, crafty folks considered ‘adults’ gather weekly to work on stitch projects.  Please consider joining the “Needle Crafters” on Wednesday mornings from 10:30-noon.  Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work come join us. This informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great group to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This weekly meet and greet group enjoys conversation can even find themselves in stiches of laughter while they are stitching away.  Come alone or bring a friend. All experience levels and ages are welcome. You do not need to be an Atkinson resident - All are invited. Please bring your own supplies.

TUMBLEBOOKS: Hey kids—are you required to read for a certain amount of time every night?  Is that hard for you to do?  You can use Tumblebooks to help you out!

Did you know that Kimball Library is a TumbleBook library? What are TumbleBooks? How do you access them? Why is this AWESOME? Don't worry, we have you covered.

What are TumbleBooks?  TumbleBooks are interactive online books that your child can read or have read to them. There are chapter books, language based books, story books, non fiction books, puzzles and games, videos and even playlists! No matter what your child enjoys, TumbleBooks has you covered.
TumbleBooks says, "The TumbleBookLibrary provides enrichment to students who are reading independently with a variety of high interest material. It also provides support to students who require skill building with a variety of exercises that can be matched with other areas of the curriculum. In general, TumbleBooks are a great addition to any reading program that can be worked on independently by each student or by the whole class."

Why is this AWESOME?  Technology is important in the world around us.  We embrace it to allow computer time to be educational for children.

Okay, you've sold me.  How do I access it?  It's easy!  You can always access TumbleBooks through www.kimballlibrary.com.  There is even a mobile app.  You will need need your library card number. Check it out!

HAPPY FOR HOT WHEELS: Calling all elementary aged kids who like cars, trucks, racing, building, and speed! We will be having a hot wheels craft, read aloud book, and tons of supplies for building hot wheels racing tracks. Bring a friend and work as a team, or work on your own to make something uniquely yours. Try out your track with our mini toy cars and be eligible to win a blue or gold ribbon! Sign up Pre-K through Grade 5 students for Saturday, November 18^th at 10:30am by visiting our website or calling us on the phone.

At 12:00pm when the cars are ready to park in the garage, we’ll have an optional Hot Wheels movie showing. Please bring a bagged lunch to eat while watching the movie if you decide to stay.

Kimball Library News 10/16/17

Just a reminder that it is never too late to learn new things.  We don’t want you to miss out on the opportunity to take classes for free right on our website. 

Go to our website (www.kimballlibrary.com) and search for 'Universal Class' on the right-hand side of the page under ‘Library Links’ or click on the icon itself a bit further down under the Facebook portion of the page.  Available subject headings are: accounting, alternative medicine, business, career training, crafts and hobbies, computers and technology… And those are just some of the subjects A-C! Some sample classes are: Interview skills 101, Medical terminology 101, Photography Basics, Windows 10, Wedding Planning 101, Caring for Seniors, Stress Management 101, Writing Basics 101 and much, much more. There are over 500 online continuing education courses! You are welcome to enroll in up to five classes at a time, and you have up to six months to finish each class. You have access to your course 24/7 via the Internet. Attend class and do assignments on your schedule. Each course has a real instructor who you may communicate with using email. All of these courses are free for Kimball Library patrons in good standing once you create an account with the service.

What are you waiting for?  It’s time to brush up on something old or to try something new.  Fall into learning!

BINGO FOR BOOKS: Hey kids—it’s time to try your luck and win some of our 'gently’ donated used books, new books, and even more books! There are titles that are picture books and chapter books as well in a myriad of reading levels.

Youth in preschool through grade 5 can join in the fun and parents can help the youngest ones stay on track and focused. This popular event is taking place on Saturday, November 4^th, in a two hour window between 12:30 and 2:30pm.  You may come and play for one round or for the entire 2 hours depending on the interest of your children.  Register now for a good time and for new books to read. 

MINDFULNES with PAULA KOPPEL--SIMPLE STEPS (NO CUSHION REQUIRED): Join us for this introduction into the practice of Mindfulness.  Paula Koppel explores the mind-body connection that fuels stress and simple ways to incorporate mindfulness into everyday life. Come learn the neuroscience involved, how mindfulness impacts the brain and how practicing mindfulness promotes emotional well-being, physical health and longevity. 

This free event is taking place on Thursday, November 16^th, at 6:30pm.  Registration is required. 
About the Coach:  Paula Koppel, MS, RN, GNP has been a registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner for over 25 years, Paula is a graduate of the Duke University School of Nursing and Duke Integrative Medicine’s Integrated Health Coach Program.  She has a master’s degree from Boston University and advanced certificate in counseling and psychology from Lesley University.   Paula was the director of geriatrics at Winchester Hospital for many years.  In 1997 she established her own consulting company and is known for developing innovative approaches to healthcare for middle-aged and older adults.  She considers mindfulness and its cultivation as essential to wellbeing in her practice as a health coach.
