Kimball Library News 8/4/14

TEENS WIN THE KIMBALL CHALLENGE:  The teens read and participated throughout the summer, earning 896 raffle tickets in the jar by July 30th for the summer reading contest.  The group goal was 800, and due to their success Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, was ‘decorated’ with a live ball python, hissing cockroaches and millipedes.  The event took place on Thursday evening (July 31) with roughly 160 people in attendance following the fabulous ‘Critters & Creatures’ event.  Check out the Kimball Library Facebook page for photos and short videos.  (No need to have a Facebook account—just click into the Facebook section on our webpage as all our photos are public.)  The facial expressions are priceless!  Congratulations to all the participating teens and all of the awesome summer readers!

VOLARE JAZZ BAND:  Summer isn’t over yet, and neither is our summer concert series.  You’ll have opportunity to hear free, lovely music wafting from the Kimball Courtyard on some Thursday evenings.  First up, on Thursday, August 14th, at 6:00pm is The Volare Jazz Band.  This band (AKA the Timberlane Community Big Band) is group of musicians from the Timberlane Community Band.

This select group plays mostly Big Band Jazz as well as a few old standards.  Musicians for this group are selected for their skill and need.

Bring your lawn chair and enjoy a great evening of music.  Handicapped parking is available from the library parking lot.

TIMBERLANE COMMUNITY BAND:  Also, on Thursday, August 21st, at 6:00pm you’ll have yet another opportunity for outdoor air music.  Come and enjoy the Timberlane Community Band for a night of fun music.  During intermission the Atkinson Recreation will be offering free ice cream sundaes to everyone in attendance.   You can’t beat that!

NEW BEGINNINGS STORY HOURS:  More information will be forthcoming, but mark your date book that all preschool story times resume the week of September 8th.  This includes Mother Goose on the Loose (ages 0-2), Bitty Books (ages 2-3), Kiddie Lit (ages 3-6), and PJ Peeps (ages 4-8).  Also note that we have book discussions for grades 3-adult beginning in September as well.

LIBRARY CLOSED: We will be closed all of Labor Day weekend (August 30-September 1).  We will re-open on Tuesday September 2.  Please stock up in advance!
