Kimball Library News 5/20/19

The time you’ve been waiting for is here!  Summer reading registration begins June 5th!  We have over 50 programs coming up on the docket that you can sign up for.  The sooner you register, the sooner you can enter our fabulous raffles.  Youth entering kindergarten through college are eligible.  Sign-ups are in person only, so send or bring the youth in!

Don’t miss out on the program ‘Kick-Off’ happening at Atkinson Academy on Wednesday, June 19th, at 6:30 PM with world renowned scientist and performer Keith Michael Johnson in ‘A Secret World of Bubbles’. In this unique show, you will see many bubble sculptures, some bigger than bathtubs, others are fog-filled spinning geometric shapes!  Please note that this event is free and open to all, but we do request that you register online, in person, or over the phone.  All ages are welcome but science concepts are geared for school-aged youth and adults.  We are grateful for the Elizabeth Smith Estate for sponsoring this exciting STEM event.

STEM ENGINEERING LAB: Register, and then join us anytime between 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM on Friday, June 21st, in the Youth Department at the library for some time exploring, building and creating with our STEM building supplies. Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our magnetic tiles, brain flakes, KEVA planks, Legos, and marble runs.  It bears noting that we’ve spied adults well above the teen years enjoying exploring and creating with all of the aforementioned.  These ‘toys’ are not just for future engineers!

Note: Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects (marbles) as potential choking hazards.

For more upcoming ‘A Universe of Stories’ summer reading programs, check out our online calendar and stay tuned!

UNLAUNCH’D VOICES: This program opens with the elderly Whitman on the evening of his seventieth birthday. The audience is a visitor in his room as he prepares for his birthday celebration. Whitman begins to reminisce during the telling. He transforms into his young vibrant self and we begin to trace back with him the experiences that led to the creation of ‘Leaves of Grass’, his lifetime work. The first part of the performance explores Whitman’s preoccupation with the self and his resolve to write with 'free and brave thought…' In the second part of the performance, Whitman’s life is changed forever by the Civil War. It is here that he finds 'the most important work of my life,' nursing the wounded soldiers in the hospitals. Through Stephen Collins’ recitation of poetry and readings of actual letters, we experience Whitman’s movement from selfishness toward selflessness and his growth into a mature artist who is at peace about 'himself, God and death.'

Stephen Collins is a Shakespearean trained actor with 40 years of theatrical experience under his belt. He has performed as Walt Whitman over 1,000 times and been met with rave reviews. Mr. Collins’ performance does not just deliver the poetry; he brings the poet to life on the stage. The show conveys an understanding of the impact and the reactions of the characters to their respective times, giving the audience not just a performance, but an experience.

Free and open to the public.  Please help us plan accordingly and register to attend this event happening on Thursday, June 20th, at 6:30 PM here at the library.

This program is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and sponsored by Atkinson Historical Society.  For more information on New Hampshire Humanities visit www.nhhumanities.org.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: Coming up at 1 PM! June 11th is featuring ‘The Upside’ and June 25th is showing ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’.  Friends are welcome to join us and we share the free popcorn.  😊

BROWN BAG BOOK CLUB: Grades 3 and 4 are invited to try the last meeting for this academic year on Thursday, June 20th at 6:30 PM.  Since summer reading will have launched, we will be in the theme.  Our book for this month is ‘Zita the Space Girl’ by Ben Hatke. This is a fun, fast-paced story of a brave girl and her brother who are whisked through a portal into space. The aliens are imaginative and fun, and the art is whimsical and engaging.  Register, bring supper in a bag, and we’ll provide the drinks, dessert, and fun!
