Kimball Library News 7/22/19

Last STEM ENGINEERING LAB of the summer is approaching on Friday, August 2nd, from 3:00-5:00 PM. Join us for some time building, exploring and designing with our STEM building supplies. Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our magnetic tiles, brain flakes, KEVA planks and marble runs. Please register in advance (all ages) and then swing by anytime in the window to enjoy these STEM toys!

A UNIVERSE OF CONSTELLATIONS:  What is your favorite constellation? Do you know the ones you can spot from our place on the planet?  Register (grades K-5) to learn some stories, names, and facts about the most popular constellations and then use your matching skills to identify the correct ones in our constellation viewers!

Join us from 6:30-7:30 PM for science, stars and maybe a surprise or two as well!  This is Ms. Michelle’s last program on August 5th, so please sign up, or if you are not in the correct age bracket stop in to say goodbye and wish her well.

STELLAR SWEETS: Did you know that chocolate has been a part of every Russian and American space voyage?  Did you know that astronauts recently did some experiments with chocolate to see if microgravity allowed for finer mixing of the ingredients?  T/weens will soon know this and more by joining Mike Cross (Department of Natural Sciences at Northern Essex Community College) as we explore the DELICIOUS topic of chocolate, a stellar sweet!

Admission requires each t/ween to bring one type of ‘dipper’ for the chocolate fountain in quantities of 15 or more. Example of dippers—-marshmallows, hulled strawberries, bite-sized fruits like cantaloupe or honey dew melon, teddy grahams, oreos, nilla wafers, sponge cake, granola bars,  biscotti, rice krispie treats, grapes, lady fingers, and orange segments.  USE YOUR IMAGINATION.  Please remember that the item you bring should be in dipping size before you arrive.  Thank you!

Preregistration is required and youth should be age 10 or at a minimum entering grade 5 in the fall.  This event is August 6th at 6:30-7:30 PM and only for tweens and teens in the correct age bracket.  This will be a sweet STEM experience!

PRESENTER – Mike Cross Instructor of Chemistry at Northern Essex Community College (and Atkinson resident). Before coming to Northern Essex, Mike was an instructor of chemistry and department chair at the College of Eastern Utah. Mike holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Utah where he specialized in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA. Since most everyone loves chocolate, teens will be interested to know why it’s good for them, how much is healthy, and what kinds they should eat.  Mike’s presentations include magic tricks!

This is a ‘UNIVERSE OF STORIES’ summer reading event sponsored by THE FRIENDS OF KIMBALL LIBRARY.

GAMING GALAXY: Last gaming galaxy of the summer!  Youth ages 9-19 are invited to show off their gaming skills in a friendly, non-competitive environment.  Register to play on August 7th from 6:00-7:30 PM.  See if you measure up to our Library Page’s skills!

LET’S CATCH THE SUN: Let's catch the sun and go home with these beautiful homemade gifts (suncatchers) that sparkle in your windows! Each suncatcher is unique and they're so much fun to make! Register grades K-5 for August 8th from 6:30-7:30 PM.  Shine on!

TUESDAY AUGUST FILMS: Movies start promptly at 1 PM.  Showing on August 6th is Poms, and showing on August 20th is Styx. Free popcorn!  Early birds do get the best seats.  😊
