Get away to the Mountain View Resort in North Conway, NH and support the Friends of the Kimball Library!

The Friends of the Library are raffling off a stay at a beautiful, fully-equipped condo during February NH school vacation week (February 25th – March 3rd) for use. Tickets are $20 each and there are only 100 printed. They are on sale now and will be drawn on Thursday, November 16th at 3 PM.

The condo has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, with an 8-person occupancy with at least one adult over the age of 21. This is a great opportunity to get away with family, friends, or a combination of both!

Tickets may be purchased at the main circulation desk with cash or checks. Checks are payable to The Friends of Kimball Library. All proceeds support this 501c organization who in turn supports the Library.

PAWS TO READ: Sign up for a reading appointment with Orla, our new Golden Retriever therapy dog and her human, Kate! Orla and Kate provide a “judgement-free zone” for emerging readers and a welcoming audience for fluent readers who love to read aloud.

Orla’s first visit to the Library is on Wednesday, November 15th starting at 3:30 PM. Reading appointments are for 10 minutes and are by registration only. This is such a great opportunity for children to practice reading aloud with a sweet furry face listening and no corrections!

Kate and Orla are registered through Pet Partners and are certified to visit us. We can’t wait to PAWS for reading!

WRITE IT OUT: Join us on Wednesday, November 15th at 6 PM. Kids in grades 2-8 are invited to join us to write it out! We'll start off with a prompt or two to read to the class and then free write. All abilities are welcome. In each session the class does something a bit different, but you’ll never feel behind or left out whether you attend monthly or less often. Registration is appreciated.

NOVEMBER ADULT BOOK DISCUSSIONS: We have two adult book discussions this month and you are free to attend either or both. Copies of the books are available for checkout at the main circulation desk.

MORNING: On the 17th at 10:15 AM we will be discussing Sweetgrass by Mary Alice Monroe.

Sweetgrass is a historic tract of land in South Carolina that has been home to the Blakely family for eight generations. ZOOM in for STRUGGLE CARE: An Evening with Bestselling Author and TikTok Star KC Davis on Wednesday, November 15th from 7:00—8:00 PM.

Author and viral TikTok star KC Davis' revolutionary approach to cleaning and organizing has helped millions of people stop feeling ashamed or overwhelmed by a messy home. In this virtual author talk, KC shares the compassionate and simple approach to customizing cleaning strategies and rebuilding your relationship with your home featured in her bestselling book, How to Keep House While Drowning.

EXPLORING THE CULTURE OF NORTH EAST WOODLAND NATIVE AMERICANS: Register and join us on Thursday, November 16th at 6:00 PM for a talk for Indigenous People's month. Learn about Native American history and culture in the Northeast Woodlands (which would have extended from New England to the Great Lakes Region). Be enlightened about basic survival of early tribes in this area.

Our presenters, Russ and Elly, reside in New Hampshire. They enjoy reading, gardening, and dabbling in Native American crafts. They also volunteer at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner, NH.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: Our next session of Choose Your Own Adventure starts on October 25th. Kids in grades K-5 won't want to miss the opportunity to join us for this 4 week session. Several different stations will be set up in the Children’s Craft Barn with building challenges, crafts, games and more! Kids can take the bus from Atkinson Academy as long as parents arrange it with the school's Pick-Up Patrol. Register to join us on Wednesdays at 3:30 PM.

TRAIN TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER TAX-AIDE: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax preparation help for anyone free of charge. They are looking for volunteers to become trained as a Tax-Aide. The training will take place starting in November. Provided we have trained volunteers, the Kimball Library hopes to offer this free tax assistance and preparation service February through April 15th of 2024.

What’s the history of your house?

Register and join us and Erin Moulton on Thursday, November 2nd at 6:00 PM to get started!

The best thing about tracking down the history of a house is that your research subject usually stays in one place! And yet, house history projects give us the opportunity to access and explore records we also see in genealogical projects: newspapers, land deeds, city directories and more. Join us as we track the history of a local Masonic Lodge and delve into the history that is underfoot each day.

About the Presenter: Erin E. Moulton writes books and tracks dead people. Erin is the author of ‘Flutter’, ‘Tracing Stars’, ‘Chasing the Milky Way’ and ‘Keepers of the Labyrinth’. In addition to her creative pursuits, Erin has over 12 years of experience tracking down interesting real-life questions as a librarian and genealogist.

LEAF PEOPLE & WREATH MAKING FOR KIDS: Calling all children in kindergarten through grade three! Register and come to the Library on Saturday, November 4th at 10:30 AM to make leaf people and a beautiful wreath. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served when we’re finished! Crafty Mrs. Birr will have all the supplies you need.

CURIOUS CREATURES: Curious Creatures provides experienced and professional exhibitors who teach respect and appreciation for exotic and unusual animals. Their presentation is hands-on and interactive. They include interesting facts and stories about the creatures in an educational and entertaining environment.

T/WEEN BOOK CLUB: T/weens in middle and high school are invited to join and meet lit-loving friends on Wednesday, November 1st at 6:00 PM to discuss the November book A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson and help devour the candy supply.

The Film Enthusiasts Club continues to meet on alternating Tuesdays at 1:00 PM. The word ‘club’ can imply exclusive, but in this case it most definitely is not! All are welcome and encouraged to attend! Coming up –

October 17th – Jules Rated: PG- 13, Runtime: 1 hr. 27 minutes. A man’s quiet life gets upended when a UFO crashes in his backyard in rural Pennsylvania. As he befriends the mysterious extraterrestrial, things start to get complicated when two neighbors discover it and the government quickly closes in.

October 31st – Hocus Pocus Rated: PG, Runtime: 1 hr. 35 minutes. In this Halloween comedy classic, a teenage boy named Max and his little sister move to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.

(The Library is not taking responsibility for the transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack them a snack that they can have before 3:30.

Parents MUST let the Library know of any changes to the drop off/pick up routine OR if their child is not attending the class. Safety first!

Sign your children (grades K-5) up ONCE for the 4-week session. If the session is full, please put your name in the queue for priority in the next session. The next session coming up starts October 25th.

Drop in on Wednesday mornings between 10:15 AM and 12:00 PM in the Children's Craft Barn so your curious creatures can explore some sensory learning materials. Play will be monitored and guided by caregivers. The Library will set the stage for curious minds. Toddlers and preschool children are welcome with their caregivers and siblings. Come when you can, leave when you must!SATURDAY STEAM: Join us for an educational and fun STEAM program for kids grades K-3.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month and work on a project using common items and have some exciting challenges using whatever we have created for the day.

In October, we will be discovering: PUMPKIN SCIENCE!

How many rubber bands does it take to cut a pumpkin in half? Can we make a pumpkin blow it's top off? Register to find out and join us on October 14th at 1:00 PM.

FLYING HIGH DOGS WITH MIKE PIAZZA: We’ll bet you haven’t seen dogs jump so high! Watch these beautiful dogs perform all kinds of tricks in this spectacular show. These are some of the most athletic Border Collies on the planet, performing for the NFL, NBA, MLS, Animal Planet and many more!

This act is perfect for animal lovers of all ages. The dogs perform a variety of Frisbee & other entertaining tricks during the performance with many opportunities for audience participation.

Mike Piazza is a multiple time world finalist and world record holder in the sport of K-9 Frisbee and the current #1 professional K-9 Frisbee performer in the world! They (Mike and his dogs) are located just north of Boston with over 20 years of experience and performing more than 150 shows each year.

Join us in the Library Courtyard on Wednesday, October 25th to see just what these dogs can do. Please dress accordingly for the weather and bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Register all ages in advance.

AN OVERVIEW OF MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: This time of year, all Medicare recipients are encouraged to review their Medicare coverage to make sure they are getting the best cost savings for their coverage. Understanding the options and nuances of Medicare can be confusing and time consuming. Medicare Open Enrollment takes place October 15th-December 7th. In New Hampshire, ServiceLink is the agency designated by the state to provide free information about Medicare and the Open Enrollment process. ServiceLink representative, Andy Schachat, will explain the Open Enrollment process and how you can review your coverage.

NAVIGATING LIFE’S FINAL JOURNEY: Join author and presenter, Patricia O’Connor who will share her knowledge and vast experience supporting people and caregivers approaching end-of-life situations to unravel mysteries often encountered navigating that journey. She will share information in understandable language intermingling patient stories to shed light on what is often a medical maze. She will present wisdom from her new book Navigating Life’s Final Journey; Conversations, Choices and Resources. She hopes to empower people by explaining the choices they have at end of life.

Patricia O’Connor, APRN MSN ACHPN has spent a career spanning 4 decades working in hospice, primary care and palliative care. Her work has always included caring for people with serious illness as they are approaching end-of-life. She has spoken throughout New England and is currently a part of the Health Care Decisions Coalition – a group which is part of the NH Foundation for Healthy Communities whose aim is to advance the knowledge and use of Advance Directives and Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment in the state of New Hampshire.

We will have two sessions on Monday, October 2nd to accommodate people’s busy schedules. Register for either the 1:00 or 6:00 PM session.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CEMETERY SLEUTHING WITH ERIN MOULTON: Cemeteries hold invaluable clues to genealogical research. Etched in stone are names, symbols and abbreviations that not only tell us more about our ancestors but also about their place in time. This program will cover strategies to help locate you your ancestor’s burial place, how to make the most out of a visit and how to decipher a variety of symbols. Most of the content will cover New England cemeteries, though many symbols can be seen nationwide. This spooky season event will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 6:00 PM. Registration is required.

Erin has over 12 years of experience tracking down interesting real-life questions at the reference desk as librarian and genealogist. She holds a BA from Emerson College, an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a certificate in genealogical research from Boston University. Visit her online at www.erinemoulton.com.

NASA CLIMATE CHANGE (ZOOM): The missions of NASA’s Earth Science Division help us to understand our planet’s interconnected systems, from a global scale down to minute processes. The division delivers the technology, expertise, global observations, and applications that help us map the myriad connections between our planet’s vital processes and the climate effects of ongoing natural and human-caused changes. Learn about the efforts of teams of NASA researches who are currently examining Earth to understand climate change, storms, fires, and where people fit in to all of it presented by Dr. Elizabeth Hoy, PhD, a NASA scientist for over 10 years. Her research interests are in geography and disturbance mapping within the high northern latitude regions of North America where she utilizes GIS and remote sensing to understand aspects of environmental change.
