Kimball Library News 12/27/11

Start crossing your fingers for snow so we can all have a jolly good time at our 2nd Annual Jack Frost Jamboree event! Remember how much fun it was last year playing winter games, making winter crafts, playing on the hill with snowshoes provided by EMS, playing miniature golf in the stacks, eating hot dogs and popcorn, drinking hot chocolate, and greeting old friends? That’s why we’re having a second go at it! We received so many compliments we decided to make it an annual event. Once again we’ll have crafts and games for kids as well as Eastern Mountain Sports providing snowshoe sizes for a myriad of ages. We’ll have a new golf course winding through the stacks as well as refreshments for most of the day. This spectacular family event will take place on Saturday, January 21st, from 10:30am-2:30pm even though our doors will be open for our usual Saturday hours from 10am-3pm. Take advantage of the flurry of activities and stop by for all or part of the day. Don’t miss this event.

We will continue to have book discussions in 2012 for a variety of ages, but we’ve shifted the range a bit for the young people. Please note that the “Brown Bag Book Club’ that was originally for grades 2 & 3 that meets on the 4th Monday of the month is now slated for grades 2-4. Brown Baggers need to register and bring their supper in a bag on Monday, January 23, from 5:30-6:30pm. Copies of the book ‘The Doll People’ by Ann M. Martin are available in the Children’s Room. Please know that parents are invited to sit in on the discussion or help with the reading. It takes a village to raise a reader.

Also note that the Tween Book Discussion that originally was for grades 6-8 that meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month from 6:30-7:30pm now includes interested mature 5th graders. In January the book under discussion will be ‘Olive’s Ocean’ by Kevin Henkes. We realize you may not be able to read this by the time you read this press release, but know we invite you to sit in and see what we are all about, give input as to what books you’d like to be reading and discussing, and have snacks with us while we dissect the book. We’ll really be looking for grades 5-8 to make the February 1st discussion which will be for the book ‘Gathering Blue’ by Lois Lowry. Tweens/teens who come to the discussion get the next book automatically that evening. For all others, books are available for the asking.

We will be closed on Monday, January 16th. Celebrate by stocking up and getting your new DVDs early the Friday beforehand and gaining an extra day.
