Kimball Library News 3/30/15

VACATION WEEK EVENTS: There’s a cursory summary below of our vacation week events.  A few activities will be highlighted over next few weeks in future articles.  Please note that Mother Goose on the Loose will be happening on Thursday at 10:30am that week.  Our regular story hours (Bitty Books, Kiddie Lit, PJ Peeps) take the week off in lieu of the special happenings below.

Join us April 27 - May 1 to participate in our spring vacation activities.  All these events require registration and we have something for everyone from grades K- 12.  Note: If the event becomes overfilled, Atkinson residents have priority.

Shoe Box City (Grades K-5) on Monday, April 27, 6:30pm-7:30pm:  Do you like where you live? Would you rather live in a city? Would you like a park in your yard, or a pond? How about a high-rise building with lots of windows? Could you design something you'd like better? Come give it a try and make dreams happen!  Using scissors, paper, markers, odds & ends, come design your favorite spot, right in a shoebox.  To help us, please bring your own big shoebox.

It's a ZOO here! (Ages 3 - 8) on Tuesday, April 28, 10:15am-11:00am OR 11:30am-12:15pm: It's time to go to the zoo. Today, we have a zoo right here with animals to make and decorate. There's a good story to hear and then it’s time to feed the elephant!

Sweet Spring Cupcake Wars (Grades 4-12) on Tuesday, April 28, 6:30pm:  Check our website for participation rules.  The winner will get a 'sweet' prize.  Parents, this is for kids and supposed to be fun and not highly competitive.  The t/weens are expected to do their own baking and decorating.

Snap Circuits Lab (Grades 3-6) on Wednesday, April 29, 6:30pm-7:45pm:  Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, kids can build on their skills as they progress through the manual. The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more. The lab will give opportunity to explore and build in step by step fashion with the help of the facilitator.

Fly Into Spring (Grades K-5) on Wednesday, April 29, 6:30pm-7:30pm:   Let's fly into spring with a butterfly themed event.   Join us to read stories that fly high and even make your own butterfly and flower!

Ultimate Lego Challenge (Grades 1-5) on Thursday, April 30, 6:30pm-7:30pm:  Join us to participate in the ultimate Lego challenge.  We’ll build each challenge individually and then spend the second half of the evening building a group project!

Sofia the First Royal Party (Ages 4-8) on Friday, May 1, 10:30am-11:30am:  Calling all princes and princesses! Join us for a Sofia The First royal party. Wear your royal robes to read a story, watch an episode of Sofia The First, and make your very own crown.

WE GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS:  The Friends of Kimball Library are an amazing group of motivated volunteers.  Without them, we would be unable to provide all the great and varied speakers, workshops, and youth events that we do.  Every month they gather to discuss the business of how to fundraise and support the library in a myriad of ways.  They also take time out for some social events, too.  Consider being part of their workforce by dropping in for one of their monthly meetings that typically happens on the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting at 10:30am.  This month on April 15th would be a great time to start!

MORE INFO: Our calendar on the website has a plenty of information on these events and many others you may have missed reading about.  Go to www.kimballlibrary.com and not only read the posts on the page, but also click the calendar icon and see each event for the month and months to come.  Please also ‘like’ us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.  You may call us Monday-Friday from 10-8 and on Saturday from 10-3 at 603.362.5234.
