Kimball Library News 3/23/15

APRIL TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Register grades 9-12 for the Wednesday, April 8 discussion at 6:30pm of ‘Out of the Easy’ by Ruta Sepetys.  It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer.

With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny. Friends are welcome.  Books are available at the front desk.

MARY TODD LINCOLN, WIFE AND WIDOW: Join us on Tuesday, April 14th, from 6:30-8:00pm to delve into the life of Mary Toddy Lincoln.  Living historian, Sally Mummey, portrays Mary Todd Lincoln as she muses on her life from her dreams as a girl to her years as First Lady during the Civil War.   Mrs. Lincoln shares stories of her life with President Lincoln and the events of that evening in Ford's Theatre when the assassin's bullet not only changed the course of the nation, but destroyed her life as well.  From the opulence of the White House to the dregs of obscurity, Mrs. Lincoln lived out her life struggling with affliction and tragedy.  With wit and heartbreak, seasoned with abiding love for her husband and her children, Mrs. Lincoln reveals the passionate humanity of a misunderstood woman. Reduced to obscurity, Mrs. Lincoln lived out the remainder of her life a troubled widow – disillusioned, isolated, friendless, and overshadowed by her husband’s legacy.

April 15, 2015 marks the 150 Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Assassination.  This insightful program is made possible by a grant from the NH Humanities Council.  This is also sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Light refreshments will be served.
