Kimball Library News 10/10/16

Spooky is the “in” thing for the month of October.  Check out our three ‘spooky’ events for youth: Spooky Craft (Oct 22 at 10:30 for all age children), Spooky Story Session, and Spooky Cinema (Oct 26).

SPOOKY STORY SESSION: Are you excited for the spooky Halloween holiday? Get into the spirit by guessing the ‘mystery substance’, dancing to spooky music, and listening to kid-friendly spooky stories. Be prepared to bring your creativity so that you can go home with a make your own vampire bat!

Register kindergarten children through grade two to attend on Wednesday, October 26th, at 5pm.  (Optional- bring a Halloween themed joke.)

SPOOKY CINEMA: This movie (Coraline) is being shown in honor of the tweens who read it for the October book discussion, but if you are 10-18 you are welcome to join us whether you read the book or not.  Feel free to bring movie snacks or a sack supper.  We will provide a bottle of water.  This film will be in the 'Teen Room' so it will be cozy and it will be shown in 2D on the 42' screen.  Register in advance for Wednesday, October 26th.  The movie will start promptly at 6pm.

Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads her into a world that’s just like her own…but better! But when this fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her 'other” Mother tries to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness and bravery to get home. Rated PG.  Run time 101 minutes.

A brief discussion will be held after the movie is over comparing the book to the film.  We will be out by 7:55pm.  Please be prompt for pick-up as we close at 8pm.

ACTIVE SHOOTER PREPAREDNESS: Join us as law enforcement officers from Atkinson present to the general public what police call an ‘active shooter” training — learning how to respond rapidly and effectively in case an intruder threatens violence. Through video clips, instruction, and discussion the program will help the public understand how they can respond in the event of an unthinkable scenario of an active shooter at a public event. Strategic planning and quick actions can save lives.

This program has been used in training personnel working in schools, local not-for-profits, and government workplaces.

The Atkinson Police will offer this program in the afternoon (1:00) and again in the evening (6:30) on Tuesday, October 25th.  Please register ASAP on the online calendar or call the library.  Non-residents are welcome.
