Kimball Library News 10/2/17

They are hot!  They are Hotspots!  You may not know that we currently own two that are available for lending.

The Wi-Fi Hotspot is about the size of a deck of cards and can link up to 15 devices to the internet at the same time. The Wi-Fi Hotspot is portable and simple to use.

The Hotspot connects to T-Mobile’s cellular network. By connecting your phone, tablet, or other wireless-enabled device to it, you can get online anywhere within T-Mobile’s coverage area – try it at home, or wherever you're going!

· The Hotspot may be borrowed only by Kimball Library cardholders in good standing.
· The Hotspot may be borrowed for a 1-week period. Overdue fines are $5 per day.
· The borrower is responsible for any loss or damage to the Hotspot. Replacement costs is $100. The charging components are $20.

If you are curious you should try them out at home so you can be prepared the next time you go on vacation or lose your internet connection.  Your kids will LOVE that they can use their iPads, Chromebooks, and surf or watch movies when traveling in the car.  Come on by and tech it out!

STEM BUILDING:  Explore our STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) building toys and expand your critical thinking skills. This time period 11-2 is available for ages 3-6 on both Thursday, October 19th and 26th.

We’ll have brain flakes, marble runs, magnetic tiles, or a combination of the three available for free play.

Please note, children under 4 years old MUST BE SUPERVISED at all times when marbles are in use. Children under 4 will not be permitted in the room without an adult. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe!

TICKBORNE DISEASE PREVENTION with Carolyn Fredette:  Each year, New Hampshire has about 1500 case of Lyme disease, making it one of the highest incidence states in the country.  Additionally, there has been increasing rates of other tickborne diseases such as Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Powassan virus.

With tickborne diseases continuing to be a threat throughout the fall months (ticks are active any time the temperature is above 40 degrees and there is no snow on the ground), Carolyn Fredette, MPH, Vectorborne Disease Epidemiologist at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) will provide an overview of Tickborne Diseases.  She will discuss the signs and symptoms of tickborne diseases that cause illness in New Hampshire, the epidemiology of tickborne diseases and the steps to prevent tick bites and transmission of tickborne diseases. Informational handouts will be available following the program to attendees.

This event taking place on Tuesday, November 7th, at 1pm is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Carolyn Fredette earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences-Medical Microbiology from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from UNH.  She has worked for DPHS for 5 years. Her primary roles include surveillance and prevention/outreach for vectorborne diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), Lyme disease, as well as emerging vectorborne diseases, such as Chikungunya and Zika viruses.
