Kimball Library News 10/9/17

Don’t let your tween or teen miss out on any of the following discussions in November!  There is so much to talk about and so much to be gleaned from hashing out a book together.

Tweens (grades 5-7) will meet on November 1st at 6:30pm to discuss 'Pax' by Sara Pennypacker.  Pax was only a kit when his family was killed, and 'his boy” Peter rescued him from abandonment and certain death. This is the story of Peter, Pax, and their independent struggles to return to one another against all odds. This tale is told from the alternating viewpoints of Peter and Pax.

Teens (grades 8-12) will meet on November 8th at 6:30pm to talk about ’13 Reasons Why’ by Jay Asher.  This controversial book and TV series will have your teen asking important questions.  In the book, Hannah’s voice tells us that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out why.  Through the tapes he becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

Candy and great dialogue happens at our book clubs.  All interested t/weens should try us out—even if they have not read the book they may come and listen.  We will share our thoughts and goodies. J  We are a judgment free zone.

Please take note that there are many beautiful raffle baskets prepared and you will be able to purchase tickets at the Kimball Library up until November 3rd near the main circulation desk.  There are so many great baskets to choose from and two gift card raffle trees.  The best part is that all the proceeds directly benefit the library through the Friends.  They buy all our museum passes and pay for so many of the incredible programs that you, your children, or your grandchildren may attend.  Stop by soon and buy early and often!

ALL GAVE SOME:  In recognition of Veterans Day, we will be showing the film, ‘All Gave Some: An Oral History Of The Vietnam War’ to the general public from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on Thursday, November 9th.  Reservations are required.

‘The Things They Carried’ is a novel that Timberlane Regional School students read and discuss as part of the school curriculum, and so it was fitting when TRHS wanted to go one step further and bring the Vietnam era as portrayed in O’Brien’s novel to life through filmmaking.  Scott Strainge, Assistant Principal at the Timberlane Regional High School, headed up a team of students and staff at the school to document the oral history of the Vietnam War. As a result, individuals who experienced firsthand the war or who felt a strong connection to the Vietnam era, volunteered to give their time and, most importantly, share their personal experiences through pictures, artifacts and oral history. These oral histories would ultimately shed light and build connections and perhaps facilitate wartime conversations.
We hope that you will plan to join us for this thought-provoking and powerful film as we take a look at this tumultuous period in time, the Vietnam era.

HOLIDAY HOURS: Please note that we will be closed on Veterans Day which falls on a Saturday this year. (November 11th)  Stock up accordingly!
