Start the New Year right by building up those brain cells!

STEM BUILDING: Join us for some time building and exploring with our STEM building toys. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are increasingly a focus in schools and careers. Build your STEM brain power with our brain flakes, marble runs, magnetic tiles, or a combination of the three available for free play.

All ages are welcome but children under 4 MUST be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. Our marbles do pose a choking hazard so we thank you for your attention to the youngest builders!
Registration is not required. Come by anytime between 11am and 2pm on Thursday, January 4th.

NOT NEW, BUT MAYBE NEW TO YOU: Have you ever heard of ‘The Jack Frost Jamboree’? We are celebrating our 8th consecutive year of hosting this treasured tradition, and whether you have come in the past or never before, you will not want to miss out!

We have lots of fun activities planned!  Join us for some snappy winter fun on Saturday, January 20th, between 10:30 and 2:30. Think ‘winter carnival’ with a twist.  PS. Cross fingers for SNOW.  :)
Take a look at some of what we are offering: miniature golf course, face painting (11:00 AM - 2:00 PM), crafts, games (the more you play, the more prizes you win!), hot dogs, popcorn, and hot chocolate, snowshoeing (weather permitting), roasting marshmallows (weather permitting) and other surprises!
All of this and more offered FREE to you and sponsored by the generous, awesome Friends of the Library.  (Please note that some of these activities are subject to change.)

JACK FROST JAMBOREE TEEN VOLUNTEERS: Teenagers, we need you!
This is a great opportunity for teens to earn those community services hours. You will be running games or other random tasks at our winter carnival. You must register and contact kwatson@kimballlibrary.com so she has all your pertinent information. Enthusiastic and responsible teens only, please. Parents may not apply on behalf of the youth.  Thank you.
*Please bring a bag lunch if you are staying the entire day even though teens are welcome to the food we are serving at this wicked cool event.

MOVIES, BOOK DISCUSSIONS, & MORE: Adults, did you know that we have nearly weekly films at 1pm, monthly book groups, Mah Jong Mondays, those who knit or crochet on Wednesdays, and so much more?

Take time to come talk to us and find a new group. Make a New Year’s resolution to develop YOU!  Learn a new skill or brush up on an old one.  We have something for everyone.

Kimball Library News 12/11/17

We can’t wait for you to check out our new exciting weekly program for the littles!

SENSORY STORY TIME: Join us for our NEWEST class: Sensory Story Time!  Some story times are too hard! Some classes are too easy!  We are thinking that Sensory Story Time is just right for your two or three year old who is almost ready for full story time, but may still be challenged by so much structure.

Join us for a story and a chance to engage your tactile senses with a sensory activity like play dough. This is a great opportunity to have toddlers and preschoolers practice sitting and listening for a small amount of time. There will be a teacher led story and child-directed exploration of the hands-on sensory stations.

Please register children ages 2-3. Because the focus is on building up our listening skills, we will ask adults to help us keep participants sitting and listening to the story. They will all be rewarded by the freedom to explore the activities right after!

This is a weekly session. We’ll be meeting on Wednesdays at 11:30am starting on January 17th.  Get online or call us to register now.  Once registered, participants are signed up for remainder of the school year. Please check the calendar for cancellations due to holidays and other events.
We look forward to getting our hands sticky and gooey with your little ones!

TINY HOUSES: Have you ever heard of a ‘Tiny House’? (And we don’t mean for elves!) You will get your chance to get an education on ‘Tiny Houses: A Very Different Approach to Home Ownership’ on Thursday, January 25th, 2018 starting at 6:30pm.

Come and hear about the basics of planning for and owning a tiny house on wheels; both its challenges and advantages. Witness insights unique from the currently popular tiny house themed television shows. Learn about 'how much' to 'where to live', options for general design, and heat, hot water and electricity choices, among other components. Living in a tiny house year-round is a topic of rapidly developing debate. Learn why something so 'cute' and compact could cause so much discussion!

Presenter's Bio:  Isa is the Project Manager and lead designer from Tiny House Northeast, a New England and upper NY State tiny house design-build business. Isa earned a M.A. in Regional Economic and Social Development with a concentration in Sustainable Development, including green building materials and construction methods research. Isa has owned a tiny house since she was 19-years old, as do several of the Tiny House Northeast team.

Registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed on Monday, December 25th, for Christmas, and on Monday, January 1st, for New Year’s Day.  Please also take note that regularly scheduled preschool programs such as Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, Discovering S.T.E.A.M., and Kiddie Lit will be on holiday break the last week of December.  Classes will resume their normal schedule starting back in January of 2018.  We wish you all a peaceful and wonderful holiday season!

We have some exciting events coming your way in the New Year!  It’s not too early to get out your calendar and save some dates!

RESCUE ROAD AUTHOR: Join us for the evening to hear New York Times best seller, Peter Zheutlin, as he talks about his recent books about dog rescues.  New York Times best seller, ‘Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway,’ is the true story of one man who drove more than one million miles to rescue thousands of dogs from hunger, abuse, neglect, and give them a second chance at life and love.  As a journalist, Peter traveled with an underpaid, over generous driver from Ohio to the Gulf Coast on his Rescue Road Trips to bring hard-luck dogs from the deep South to loving 'forever families' up north looking to adopt a pet, with the help of many selfless volunteers along the way. Come hear about this inspiring story on Thursday, January 11th, from 6:30-8:00 PM.

Peter is a freelance journalist and author whose work has appeared regularly in The Boston Globe and The Christian Science Monitor. He has written for The Los Angeles Times, Parade Magazine, AARP Magazine, and numerous other publications in the U.S. and abroad.

His book, ‘Rescued: What Second-chance Dogs Teach Us about Living with Purpose, Loving with Abandon, and Finding Joy in the Little Things,’ is a follow up follow-up to ‘Rescue Road’, and offers a new look into the world of rescue dogs. Sharing lessons from his own experiences adopting Labs with large personalities, as well as stories and advice from dozens of families and rescue advocates, Zheutlin reveals the surprising and inspiring life lessons rescue dogs can teach us.

Peter graduated from Amherst College in 1975 and from Boston College Law School in 1979. He lives with his wife Judy in Massachusetts with rescue dogs, Albie, Salina and Jambalaya. He also has two grown sons.

This program is sponsored by The Friends of the Kimball Library and SARL (Salem Animal Rescue League). A donation box will be in the lobby for those who would like to make a donation of food and supplies to the rescue league.

There will be books available to purchase and the author will be on hand to sign copies following the program.  Registration for this event is required.

DOWNLOADABLE BOOKS: Just in case you’re new to the library game, we want to let you know that you can borrow digital books for free from New Hampshire Downloadable Books with just a valid Kimball Library card. This includes ebooks and audiobooks.  Most ‘gadgets’ these days such as your smartphone, tablet, or dedicated e-reader (like Kindle) will allow it.

There are two apps that can be used for this purpose. One is the Overdrive app, along with the newest app, Libby.  You can use either of these apps depending on personal preference. Both apps will allow you to log in with your library card number.

If you head to our website (www.kimballlibrary.com), you will see the ‘Downloadable Books’ icon.  If you poke around the site there are instructions for use, as well as a link near the bottom of the page leading to the NH Downloadable Books Blog that has a plethora of information including help and lists of the newest items.

If you are the type of person that likes one-on-one assistance with gadgets and gizmos, and the thought of reading instructions to learn how makes you feel a bit queasy, have no fear! Help is on the way!  Just email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com and you can get an appointment to download a book on your device.  It’s important to us that you learn to enjoy all the features of the library that you desire. So what are you waiting for? (PS. If email makes you queasy you can also call and ask for Kathy Watson.) J

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed on Monday, December 25th, for Christmas, and on Monday, January 1st, for New Year’s Day.  Please also take note that regularly scheduled preschool programs such as Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, Discovering S.T.E.A.M, and Kiddie Lit will be on holiday break the last week of December.  Classes will resume their normal schedule starting back in January of 2018.  We wish you all a peaceful and wonderful holiday season!

Snack will be provided to be enjoyed with a movie featuring the talented voice of Steve Carell and the hilarious antics of Stuart, Bob, Kevin, and all the minions.

Young children are encouraged to bring a blanket or pillow to make their viewing experience more enjoyable. Chairs will be provided for adults. Stay warm with us, snuggle up with your friends and family, and join us for this great feature:

After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother-a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin's despicable footsteps-one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad.

Please register for this event.

HOLIDAY TUESDAY FILMS: To keep you in the ’feel good’ seasonal mood, we’ll be showing some films in December on Tuesday afternoons at 1pm.  On December 5th, ‘Lovely, Still’ and on December 12th, ‘Love Actually’ will be shown.  Also in the queue on December 19th we'll be showing 'Joyeux Noel' which tells the true-life story of the spontaneous Christmas Eve truce declared by Scottish, French, and German troops in the trenches of World War I.

These might not be your typical holiday classics, but they will warm your heart.  We’ll do our part by providing free popcorn and comfy chairs for early arrivals.  Stock up on your feel good holiday mood by dropping by.  Registration for these movies is not required.  (Please also note that titles are subject to change and comfy chairs are limited.)

What's the Hour of Code?

The hour of code is a family event coming to Kimball Library via the Sylvan Center in Salem, NH as part of a movement to enrich and educate during National Computer Science Week. You'll be virtually joining other students all over the world. Your child will learn computer programming through fun and engaging activities. Join Sylvan and Kimball Library for the movement by registering and coming to this 'Hour of Code' event.

This year we’ll be celebrating and coding together on Thursday, December 7th, from 6-7pm with youth in grades kindergarten through grade 5.  Registration is required.  (Older t/weens may assist for service hours if they email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com directly and get permission in advance.)  As an aside, there will be no ‘Girls Who Code’ on Tuesday that week so those attendees may sign up for this instead.

There will be a total of 12 devices available from the library and Sylvan, so if you have any device or gadget that you can connect to our public wifi that your child is familiar with and would prefer, please bring it. This will leave those for the 'device-less' to use. (*BYOD=BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE) Laptops are preferable over tablets. Once again, you don't *have* to bring anything other than enthusiasm and a smile. (In partnership with 'Sylvan of Salem' Sylvan.Salem@sylvanlearning.com)

MAKE AND TAKE GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS: We have a myriad of supplies, materials, and kits so you can come into the library anytime in this window (11am - 2pm) on these two Saturdays (December 9 & 16) and make a gift and take it home. There will also be items and kits that you can just take with you if that better suits your family schedule. It's a grab bag sort of event, and your kids will love making their own gifts, and you'll love that they can make their mess here!

*Young children will need supervision. JUST DROP IN. REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE CHANGES: As we near the holidays some of the book clubs alter their meeting times to better accommodate the members.  We have discussions for children in kindergarten all the way up to our seniors.  Please check the online calendar and give us a call if you are unsure of any December alterations.  As always, we have enough books for all interested children or adults who choose to register and attend.

Likewise, we have alterations in the Girls Who Code schedule in December.  We will not meet on December 5th, but we are hoping you will come on December 7th to ‘An Hour of Code’ instead.  December 12th will be a ‘make-up and catch-up’ evening so we can all start the new year literally on the same page.  There will be no other classes until January 2, 2018!

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed on Monday, December 25th for Christmas, and on Monday, January 1st, for New Year’s Day.  We wish you all a peaceful and wonderful holiday season!
