Kimball Library News 11/5/18

Woo-hoo!  It’s time to register for the ever popular ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ event! Let the kids spend the day having fun with crafts, art, music, games, and movement. Our finale will be a show with Zoo Creatures!  We are proud to sponsor this annual event so parents can have a day (4.5 hours) to catch up with holiday hoopla. This exciting event is taking place on Saturday, December 1st from 10:00 to 2:30 and is available for children in kindergarten through grade five.  Children are expected to stay throughout the entire event and participate in the holiday drop n’ shop activities.

The sample schedule (subject to change) is listed below.

10-10:15 Drop off & sign waiver.  Children may not be left unless: the waiver is signed by a parent or guardian, they have a lunch, and they have appropriate outdoor gear.

10:15-11:30 Session 1: Penguin craft, stories, and more.   The children will be engaged by creating, listening, making, and doing.

11:30-12 Lunch break with outdoor recess. If weather is very poor we will use our STEM toys at the break.  Please pack a lunch for this session as well as outdoor gear.

12-1:15 Session 2: Movement, music, and games.  Music is in the air, games to get kids out of their seats, and fun with their peers in new and interesting ways! STEM toy time or games may happen while Zoo Creatures set up.

1:30-2:30 Session 3: ZOO CREATURES (Siblings & parents may join us. We would appreciate you registering for Zoo Creatures separately if your child is not involved in the drop ‘n shop event.)

ZOO CREATURES: Zoo Creatures boasts that they captivate our audiences with an outstanding display of exotics, presented in a safe, fun and informative manner. The educational shows promote awareness and respect for all living things, and feature the most diverse collection of exciting reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and much, much more!

Animals are displayed in a show-and-tell format, and audience participation is not only welcomed, but strongly encouraged.

All children participating in the Drop 'n Shop program for the day are already included in the registration and will get front row seats on the floor. ALL OTHERS need to register. We have a limited capacity so register ASAP and please let us know if you need to cancel as you may be taking a spot away from somebody else.  The Zoo Creatures event is the same day as the Drop n’ Shop (Saturday, December 1) at starts at 1:30.

COMBINED T/WEEN BOOK CLUB IN DECEMBER: The book of the month is Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  Both tweens and teens (grades 5+) will meet on Wednesday, December 5th, at 6:30 PM to pool their minds together during the busy holiday season to discuss this riveting piece of historical fiction.

About the book: Bella, newly arrived in New York from Italy, gets a job at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. There, along with hundreds of other immigrants, she works long hours at a grueling job under terrible conditions. Yetta, a coworker from Russia, has been crusading for a union, and when factory conditions worsen, she helps workers rise up in a strike. Wealthy Jane learns of the plight of the workers and becomes involved with their cause. Bella and Yetta are at work--and Jane is visiting the factory when a spark ignites some cloth and the building is engulfed in fire, leading to one of the worst workplace disasters ever.  Through a series of twists and turns throughout the book, the three girls become fast friends--and all of them are in the Triangle Shirtwast Factory on March 25, 1911, the day of the fateful fire. In a novel that puts a human face on a tragedy, Margaret Peterson Haddix has created a sweeping, forceful tale that will have readers guessing until the last page who--if anyone--survives.

Refreshments and thought-provoking conversation will be served. All interested t/weens are welcome. (Not young adults, not children -- hence, T/WEENagers in grades 5-12.) Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.  All youth from any surrounding towns are invited.

HOLIDAY CLOSING: Please note that we will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd (Happy Thanksgiving!) and Friday, November 23rd.  We are open as always on the Saturday following from 10-3.  We are thankful for our wonderful patrons and wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
