Kimball Library Names 6/8/2020

Take Out at Your Library is ongoing and Imagine Your Story summer reading registrations are officially off and running!  PLUS, we have nifty new events for adults! Don’t snooze away your summer and miss out on all the great new available titles and events.

SUMMER HEALTHY COOKING CLUB: Do you enjoy cooking and trying new recipes? If so, why not join as our Healthy Cookbook Club goes virtual. We will be holding our 1st VIRTUAL HEALTHY COOKING CLUB on June 15th via ZOOM.

We will start off with a review of a Cooking Blog evaluated by one of our Cookbook Club members. And we will plan reviews of other blogs, online cooking books, and other healthy cooking resources.
Register and we will email you a link to our Zoom as well as the password to get in. This link is via invite only and is not posted on social media.

THE LISTENING FAIRY: This is the perfect opportunity for reluctant readers, emergent readers, or readers who just like someone NEW to listen to them!  This opportunity will be available on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM.

Once you register with the Listening Fairy, you'll be sent a ZOOM link so the fairy can listen to you read. You'll wait in the waiting room until it's your turn. Please choose a maximum of 5 minutes worth of reading. If the fairy has a light schedule you may get to read even longer. Choose what your children will feel successful with. They will receive lots of encouragement. Please sign up for each week separately.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE (ZOOM) WITH EVA MCDERMOTT: Are you interested in expanding your photography skills? Sign up for this four-week session program designed to help you build your confidence in creating and capturing great photographic images using a DSLR or advanced mirrorless camera. The class will be hands-on but virtual, so come join us via Zoom and bring an adventurous heart, creative spirit and your camera. Class size will be limited and Atkinson residents have priority.

Week 1 - Getting to know your camera: You will learn about basic camera settings such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and what situations are best for using aperture priority, shutter speed priority, and program modes. Other topics that will be covered include controlling depth of field, camera focus modes, use of telephoto, wide angle, and macro lenses / settings, and what affects image quality?

Week 2 - Photographic approach to different subjects will be discussed (people, landscapes, natural abstracts, macro, architecture), as well as Rules of Composition, Breaking the Rules, Visual Design and the Art of Seeing (advice from my favorite photographers).

Week 3 - The Quality of Light: Ambient, Flash, Special Lighting Situations, Light and Shadow Play, Storm Light, Forest Light, Coastal Light, Sunrise, Sunset will be covered. The use of graduated filters to balance the lighting in a scene will be discussed and demonstrated as well as the use of polarizers and neutral density filters, and In Camera Special Effects (motion blur, coated filters).

Week 4 - Processing Basics and resources, RAW vs. JPEG, Black and White, cropping and effect on image quality, special effects, HDR (high dynamic range processing). Enhancing the artistic appeal of your photographs. Presentation of your photographs beyond posting on the web.

Registration is Required: You will receive a private Zoom link and password.

‘IMAGINE YOUR STORY SUMMER READING CLUB’: We bet you didn’t IMAGINE that so much of your school and summer would be virtual!  No worries, we can sprinkle fairy dust into your life as you partner up with your library.

This year we’ll be rolling out events only a few weeks at a time so please keep your eye on the youth summer reading pages.  Those pages are on our website under CHILDREN’S SERVICES or T/WEENS drop-down menu, and new events and programs will be listed there.

Youth entering middle, high school or college will receive a $5 fine credit just for signing up for summer reading. Use it to pay down your library fines or receive future fine credit.  Registration is rolling throughout June & July. Sign up early for more time to participate and gain more possibilities of being ‘fairy’d’.

FAIRY, FAIRIES, FAIRY’D?? In light of all things magical, each registrant is guaranteed at least one visit from a fairy. We will leave your gift at your front door. Social distance all the way. The more you participate in the Library by checking items out or being in our events/programs the more likely you are to receive multiple visits. We refer to your participation as getting your ‘WINGS’.  More wings, more fairy visits!
Let the magic begin by REGISTERING ASAP!

STAY TUNED: Visit our website, FaceBook page, Twitter account, Youtube or Instagram to learn about more updates and resources to come.  We miss all our face-to-face interactions with our wonderful community, but safe practice says ‘see you online.’  We have upcoming events online as well that you or your children will be able to participate in.  See you there!
