Kimball Library News 12/3/23

The holiday week between December 26th and 30th is a pretty chill time in the Children’s Room so we are following the vibe with our young patrons (preschool and elementary ages). That week we will have out some craft supplies, art supplies, and some educational building toys that you don’t often see between the hours of 10 AM to 7 PM. Each day will be different and you won’t know what is out unless you come visit us. Some items are ‘Take & Make’, some are ‘Make & Take’ while supplies last, and some are just meant to be used in-house. It’s always nice to get out of the house and meet up with old friends or make new ones at the Kimball Library. Thank you for your patronage, and we are wishing you all a peaceful and joyful holiday season.

BROWN BAG BOOK CLUB: We're back again for another month of Brown Bag Book Club for kids in Grade 3-5.  Bring a snack in a brown bag and be ready for talking! Drinks and a treat are served, so get your book and join us! Don't forget to register and read the book before you come.

We will be talking about the book, A Dog on His Own by Mary Jane Auch on Thursday, December 21st at 6 PM.  Copies will be available to pick up in the Children's Room for reading.

MARINE MAMMAL RESCUE WITH RON WATSON: All marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Some are also protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The Marine Mammal Protection Act was enacted by the federal government on October 21, 1972 and fulfilling this requirement, the Seacoast Science Center Marine Mammal Rescue staffs and responds to all reports of marine mammals that haul out or strand on the shore in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts (from Essex, MA to the Maine border). Join us on January 11th at 6 PM to hear about marine mammal rescues and learn about the different types of threats that seal pups face on our crowded coastline and what you can do to help protect them!

About the presenter:  An Atkinson resident, Watson is an outdoors-man who has spent his life exploring the natural world. As a longtime photographer, most of his work over 60 years has revolved around the ocean both on and below. His work has appeared in scientific journals, on PBS’s NOVA and on Amateur Naturalist programs. Ron has worked as a scientific diver for the New England Aquarium and as the Chief Scientific Diver for the Charlotte Marine Research Team. He has worked with various marine mammal rescue organizations around the country and is currently on staff at the Seacoast Science Center Marine Mammal Rescue.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: On the 3rd of January we will discuss Gallant by V. E. Schwab. All Olivia Prior has of her past is her mother’s journal—which seems to unravel into madness. Then, she receives an invitation to come home—to Gallant.  Yet when she arrives, she receives a cold reception.  But Olivia is not about to leave the place.  She knows that Gallant is hiding secrets, and she is determined to uncover them.  Crossing a ruined wall at just the right moment, she finds herself in a place that is Gallant—but not. Here lies the secret that has unraveled generations of her family, one that hints at where her father came from…

Copies of the book are available at the main circulation desk. Grab a friend to join you for candy and conversation!
